ableist anything also completely fine, including the r-slur

racist slurs remain a (albeit ultimately forgivable) faux-pas, but telling poc what and who they ought to support is more in than ever

homophobic and transphobic sentiment is fine (implying political opponents are failing at correctly performing gender, secretly gay, crossdressers, trans etc. in a disparaging way), slurs so far a no

commenting 'oi vey' under anything critical of Israel now totally cool, not an antisemitic dogwhistle

if you are a member of any of these groups and have an issue with people who claim to be speaking in your best interest doing any of this you're a karen and helping fascists btw. no we can't be funny or mean or aggressive about our politics without any of these, why are you asking

Writing down my own thoughts about the whole Lindy West 'polyamory' debacle because I vaguely remember her from the early 2010s body positivity wave. I'm not very interested in speculating about how happy she is or isn't with her arrangement, the article and excerpts from her book just raised some points for me that go beyond their specific situation. 1. Her husband posits monogamy as 'ownership' - this makes her uncomfortable because her husband is black and she is white. However, her husband has zero qualms about getting married, when marriage as an institution was historically very much about conveying ownership of the wife from her father to her husband. Curious. 2. Monogamy is of course not ownership - it's a boundary and prerequisite for a relationship with a specific person, and not an unreasonable or abusive one. If monogamy is disagreeable to you, you can just not be in a relationship with someone who wants monogamy. You are free to leave and be in a polyamorous relationship with other people instead. It's like not wanting to date a smoker or wanting to date someone who matches your own level of religiosity. No one owes you a relationship on your exact terms - this goes both ways. 3. Trying to posit wanting to sleep with multiple women as a man as some sort of brave departure from 'heteronormativity' and 'traditional marriage' when a husband having a mistress/a whole second family/sleeping with other women while married has been common and even expected through much of history, and polygamy (almost always one man with multiple wives) has been practiced all over the world. Again, he seemed to have no problem getting traditionally heterosexually married. Monogamy has always been primarily demanded of women.

4. Loving someone and wanting to spend the rest of your lives together does not mean you have to 'make it work' or 'fight for your love' against all obstacles. You can love each other very much and still be incompatible for long-term serious commitment. You're not starring in your very own romance novel, it's not weakness or failure to break up. I feel like women especially are so primed for this concept of romance over everything and 'keeping a man'. You can be single and happy. You can fall in love with someone else who is more compatible. Don't be in a sunk-cost-fallacy relationship. Don't overlook your own deal-breakers to keep a partner. Don't make yourself unhappy in the name of love.
