taking off a mask to reveal what lies beneath as a romantic gesture is overdone, and besides i want to see the romantic or even platonic potential of protecting someone's identity beneath the mask, without any expectation of ever being allowed to see what's under it. picking it up and holding it gently to their face when it's knocked off and they're in danger of being exposed, without trying to catch a glimpse of what they "really" look like under there. throwing yourself in front of them to hide them from view while they put themselves back together without taking advantage or looking back to see what you're protecting. learning to read them by body language, tone of voice, and behaviour so well that you never need to see their face to feel like you know and understand them.

i'm going to try not to get too technical here, but there's this really fascinating phenomenon in batfam-fanon spaces that i want to talk about: jason's death and resurrection is taken infinitely more seriously than those of any other character, without any critical thought about why.

obviously from a doylist perspective his death is more important than say, stephanie's, because it marked a change in the comic landscape towards darker, grittier storylines. but fanon spaces don't really care about doylist perspectives in their incorrect quotes posts, so that's clearly not the explanation (although there is something to be said for a trickle-down effect: jason's death is important out-of-universe, so casual or non-participating fans are just more aware of it).

i think other character's deaths are minimized in comparison to jason's because to acknowledge them would be to destroy the fanon characterization of jason. he's a snarky, wronged, "female-coded" revenge fantasy (NOT TRUE!!!). in reality, acknowledging that other characters have died means acknowledging that jason, the character, is choosing to fixate on his death and act self-righteous about it. he's cutting off his own leg just so he can look at the rest of his family and go "why are you making me do this? why are you doing this to me?" and that is so so so much more fascinating than "i was wronged and am having an appropriate response that is consistent with the behavior of every other character". do you understand
