I’ve been a Dwayne McDuffie fan since before I even realized it, from JLU to Static to Ben 10, so in my adult age I finally decided to really dive into Milestone. Last night I read Hardware #1, Static #1, and Icon #1.
I already had issues with Icon and his approach to things, from allowing slavery to go on to the assimilationist, ‘we need to better ourselves FIRST’ way of thinking. It’s so self righteous and disconnected. And this being revealed to me in the first five pages of his comic is just the icing on the cake for me. This dude isn’t even black. He was a GROWN ASS alien that took on a baby African-American form.
But that was in 1829. Meaninf technically.. he’s been black for longer than 100% of black folks on Earth. He’s been through it, or witnessed it, from slavery to the Civil Rights era. So ..
But then it’s like .. he had the option to switch forms at any time. Every other black person does not have that option. I like how McDuffie doesn’t gloss over this or even have it stand as an acceptable quirk, but something that Icon has to work on, guided by the youth. I’m curious on everyone’s thoughts on this. I would also like to say;
I am excited to see Hardware whoop his ass.
I snuck a peak at the second and third picture there, and like, I can’t wait.
