Oh the joy of physically collecting comics. I cant describe it! Actually yes I can.
Holding a newly purchased comic in my hands is such a rush. Especially the older ones that've yellowed with age. I love the way the pages feel against my finger tips. I love the texture of printed halftones. I love turning every page and the sound the paper makes as I do.
I love reading the dated ads for products and services that no longer exist. I love wondering what would happen if I called that phone number that could once hook you up with a "How To Draw Superheroes" service back in 1985. I wonder how many people called that number back in the day. I love wondering how many people owned this comic before I did.
I love going to comic shops and being surrounded by people who love the same things that I do, people who might be awkward and obsessive and passionate like me. I love walking up to the rows of longboxes, bursting with anticipation. I can hardly contain myself. I love methodically sifting through every issue til I reach the end of one box and start on the next. I love spending an hour making sure I've seen every one. I love finding some random issue from some random run of some random character. I love hearing "That's a good one" from the cashier.
I love the Bronze Age issues of Iron Man, Moon Knight and Namor that I inherited from my dad, and I love knowing that he kept some of his collection for himself because he's not quite ready to part with his prized issues just yet. I love knowing that even after he's gone, I'll have something special to remember him by, a shared experience, a shared love of turning pages. I love the idea of one day parting with my own collection and passing it down to someone special and sharing that experience with them.
I love the space they take up in my room. I love the box stashed under my bed. I love the stacks on my dresser too that I havent gotten around to reading yet, but I especially love that big box. I love the strain of pulling it out. I love the sense of pride I feel in barely being able to lift it up due to its weight, tangible proof of a love I've had for over a decade. I love knowing its about full and I'll need to get a new box soon. I love the idea of looking down at an empty box just waiting to be filled. I love that my collection will only get bigger and bigger theough the decades
I loved having to lug that box back and forth between my dorm and my parents house between semesters because I cant bare to be apart from my comics. I love counting the days until the semester is over and finally moving my collection to my newly leased apartment. I love knowing that wherever I go, wherever I end up, that box is coming with me, no matter how cumbersome it is lugging it around.
I love collecting comics. I think it's awesome that in this digital age, reading comics is more accessible than ever. I love that anyone can go online or download an app and have access to thousands upon thousands of comics. But I think wherever you can, whenever you can, whether you're at a dedicated shop, a thrift store, a yard sale, wherever - buy a comic if you're able to. Especially an old one. There's something special about holding an aged Conan the Barbarian issue with the cover torn up and pages falling out. It's old and ruined and devoid of monetary value. But it's lived a long life and has been loved thoroughly, and I'm just as happy storing it with my pristine issues protected in plastic sleeves. Both have a place in my collection.
I love collecting comics.

The Jason Todd Book Club
Over the weekend, a friend asked me how accurate the popular fanon that Jason is a book nerd is. “Mmm, medium?” I said. “There’s evidence, but fandom definitely took it and ran with it.”
Since it coincidentally came up on Discord tonight, I decided to compile every instance I know of of Jason either referencing literature, or just enthusing over books. If I missed any, please let me know!
(I don’t have issue numbers because most of these I took from my own previous posts on Tumblr and I didn’t note down the issues then. I’ll try to give as much context as I remember!)
Robin, Pre-Crisis:
Jason quotes the opening (and most famous) line from Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
