Fic Preview Text:

Joker gives Mike his best innocent smile, knowing that it will probably annoy him more than put him at ease. Joker’s not here to kill anyone. Scouts honor! I promise! He figures Mike has seen his fair share of sordid characters come into his place of business. People who sit down and go on and on about whatever’s on their mind, venting to whoever will pay them any attention. With this bar located in the not so pristine and shiny part of Gotham City, Joker can guess he’s not the first villain to venture inside.

So what if his kill count is higher than the tab he’s running right now?

I’m a paying customer and I demand some respect!

“Go ahead, Mike, hit me again.” He smiles again, nudging his empty glass forward.

Mike pours him another two fingers. Joker grabs the glass and swigs it fast, and the hot burn of the liquid tingles down his throat. He wishes he could burn what he’s feeling right out of his brain. Burn Batman.

Fic Preview Text:

The fingers burrowing into Bruce’s skin hurt so badly that he almost misses Joker’s reappearance. The dead are holding him down at his feet, having carried him there like a bed of ants, cackling all the while.

Bruce can’t move. They won’t let him. So he can only gasp when Joker gets on his knees and crawls over his body, straddling him with hands firmly planted on Bruce’s chest. Right over the Bat symbol, right where Bruce’s heart is frantically shooting agony into his veins.

Joker shines like a lantern against the visceral browns and greys of the people he’s killed. Beautiful and lethally colorful, like a carnivorous plant.

“Shhh, steady,” he shushes gently from above, and it’s so utterly wrong it frightens Bruce more than anything else. “Steady, dear.”

Fic Preview Text: For a long moment, they stay like this, Bruce’s thumb tracing soothing shapes on Joker’s cheek. The silence is finally broken by Joker’s shaking voice. He gives a small laugh. “I think I finally understand you, Bats.”

Bruce begins to laugh, but it turns quickly into a cough and he grimaces, his hand coming to press against the wound in his side.

“Oh, Bats,” Joker says, with a sympathetic pout to his voice. He pulls his glove off and threads his bare fingers through Bruce’s over the wound. With tear tracks down his cheeks, he suddenly grins, digging the tips of his fingers into the ripped fabric and flesh underneath. Bruce gasps in pain, grabbing at Joker’s wrist with his other hand, trying to tear it away, and Joker pulls back, stretching his bloody fingers out in the air between them.

Joker watches the blood run down his hand with a strange fascination. “You know,” he says softly, “it always does surprise me that you’re human after all.”
