Every Tuesday for 8 weeks I will spend time in a New York City museum. Within one week’s time, I will compose and record a song (at home, all alone) inspired by the visit.  

The second song in the series, “In-Betweener,” was inspired by time spent at the Brooklyn Museum.

HERE COMES THE MONSTER

Upon entering the Hall of Marine Life at the American Museum of Natural History, one is instantly overwhelmed by the massive model blue whale suspended from the ceiling - the largest known animal ever to have existed, strung up far above the heads of comparatively tiny human visitors. In the far left corner of the lower level, lit so dimly that you might pass it by unaware, is another whale: a sperm whale grappling with its natural enemy, a giant squid. 

This scene has stuck with me from my earliest childhood visits to the museum, and as an adult it still chills me. Two titans in the dark, frozen in the middle of trying to kill the hell out of each other. This is where “Here Comes the Monster” began… but then it quickly took a sharp turn into King Kong territory. After working with harpoon imagery and the idea of doing battle, I started to wonder what make us love the Other, the Evil, the Monstrous. There are countless examples throughout fiction and history. But does loving the monster strip away your humanity? If you choose to forsake your monster and stand against it with people, will your absent humanity return?

These are the things I thought about while I carved out my narrative, that of a girl in love with a monster. She first abandons her kind and pursues a relationship that is impossible for others to understand, and then ultimately backpedals, standing silent among her peers as they send her love to an icy death or a life of exile.
