I know the issue of what exactly is canon anymore for Batwoman is kind of up in the air but I would like if there was some acknowledgement of literally anyone else’s contribution to Batwoman comics in the last 16 years since Rucka wrote her still being canon tbh. In particular after all the lesbophobia that happened over the Maggie and Kate relationship I think it would be nice to eventually get some confirmation that that still happened at some point. I like this series a lot so far in general terms of what it’s doing with Kate (I like her seeking inpatient MH care and think that’s a unique and interesting choice for a character in this genre, I like her relationship with Beth here and find it very moving, and her interactions with Renee are fun. I think it generally subverts the alpha bitch misinterpretation of her that many batfam fans have as well), what it’s doing with Renee after she’s been on the bench for the justice league for 2 years, and especially with Beth. I don’t like the idea that Rucka has seemingly thus far turned back the clock so the only things that are canon are 52, Five Books of Blood, and either elegy happened and these events are happening afterwards or this is a total replacement of elegy’s ending. All other runs for her are by necessity partially or completely retconned, the extent of which remains to be seen. So interesting how the ones that are still canon are all Rucka stories! I also think it’s weird for Kate to be functionally lobotomized if she comes back to Gotham and the events of rebirth, an era where she was very central to the batfamily and trained + had conflict with many of the members, are still canon for everyone else but her. I guess we’ll see more over time but as much as I like Rucka’s work on Batwoman comics over the years, he’s not the only creative who’s made good comics for her. I understand that characters do get their histories changed from time to time but DC has avoided that in general for a decade and I don’t want to see her stories get entirely wiped out as part of one male writer’s ego trip. Even if he did create her! Would be happy for this concern to be proven unnecessary but we'll see

As an adult woman I can live without DC ever actually making a modern Wonder Woman show (for adults or kids) but it actually does make me sad as the mother of a small child who loves Wonder Woman so much he’ll ask me to put on the Wonder Woman cartoon for him and I have to pull up the same few justice league cartoon episodes (that are often anywhere from mildly sexist to highly sexist! except for the one where she beats an army with their own tanks and then stops a wedding lol). Because he’s so young that he assumes she must have her own show and I actually do think explaining that Batman and Superman have their own animated kids shows that he likes but Wonder Woman doesn’t might plant a seed in a small child’s head that women are lesser-than. It also makes me sad because he does like a lot of the cartoons with her in it and he loves the children’s picture books he has with her, and she used to be his #1 favorite, but over time he’s gotten more into Spider-Man because he has a kids cartoon that my son enjoys. So there’s just so much more content for kids of other characters, especially male ones (there’s not much for female characters at all beyond DC Superhero Girls and Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, both of which my kid likes but are no longer being made). Wonder Woman’s character has a totally different social utility for small children who are still forming their view of the world and of how men and women relate (this was, for all his faults, one of William Moulton Marston’s goals in the creation of Wonder Woman & the writing of her early comics in the first place; she was at least as much meant to guide boys as to inspire girls) versus adults, who can enjoy adult-oriented comics and other media but who perhaps don’t always need to be taught any kind of lesson from it. I think we lose something when Batman and Superman are hugely in the pop culture landscape for small children but Wonder Woman isn’t. Frankly, I also don’t think other female characters, positive as they may be, generally fill the same social role as Wonder Woman because her conceit as a character is so inherently feminist. For example, Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl is also in a lot of kids’ Batman cartoons, and she does represent an empowered female character and a good role model for kids, but her goal in life is not to fight sexism and achieve gender equality. Plus, kids’ shows as a medium matter more for young children because they’re too young to read comics. A teenager or adult can go read some Wonder Woman comics if they want more of her stories. A small child can’t, whether that’s because they’re pre-readers or they’re not old enough for the content of adult comics.

Also, my son is a son of a lesbian single mom by choice, and although Diana is formed through magic, Hippolyta and Diana are really the only fictional family in my son’s media diet that we can point to and tell him it’s like our family. Not every adult needs this kind of representation but it does matter to little kids.
