One Piece Headcanon: Reworking Haki

I will say that I am among people who feel that ever since Haki was formally introduced, it greatly diminished a lot of what made the fights in One Piece unique. Haki quickly became the answer against everything (sorta like Usopp's Pop Greens, but I'm not gonna get into that here).

Now, that isn't to say that Haki isn't or shouldn't be relevant. It was Oda's answer to being able to fight Logia users.

I think what I would do is just omit Advanced Haki all together, because it kinda feeds into the whole 'Haki solves everything'. Also, Haki would not nullify nor negate DF powers.

So, let's get into the three types of Haki and their fundamental traits and my changes.

Observation Haki -- Enhanced Senses

There's...not really much to change here. Actually. Just that having Observation gives you enhanced senses. As for Katakuri's Future Sight...just let it be a rare trait. It's basically ESP.

Armament Haki -- Enhanced Physical Offense and Defense

The most utilized of the three, I believe, and the worst offender of the problems with Haki. Armament helps to make someone more durable as well as able to hit harder than the average person. This is also how you can attack Logia users, plus cause significant damage to whatever you can't damage as a normal person. However, no one is necessarily immune to feeling the effects. Able to punch Kuzan? Your hand still gets covered in ice, but at least you were able to land a hit.

Conqueror's Haki -- Will of a King

Honestly...this is the only example of advanced Haki in general. I know what I said before but, hear me out. The reason I say this is because Haki...well, let's remember what Haki is. Or rather, what Haki means. It means ambition, aspiration, drive, vigor, domineering spirit, will... This is the very foundation of Haki. In this context, everyone in the cast can very well have Haki, so as long as they have the drive. They have their ambition. And, I can see characters like Nami and Usopp, who believe in Luffy so much, exuding their will against a foe as a show of determination. (Think Reiatsu or Spiritual Pressure from Bleach) What makes people with Conqueror's Haki different is the will to rule/conqueror. The will to be a reckoning force. Willing to shake the world.

Again, I'm not focusing on the powerscaling here. Power is not dynamic. In fact, the will of the user is integral to how effective the Haki is.

Also...I've heard of the whole rock-paper-scissors thing and I sorta want to apply it here.

Important Note: This isn't the end all be all. Sure, there could still be resistance/effectiveness, but it will depend on the person. Usopp may have an affinity for Observation, but it does little for him against Zoro's Armament.

Observation Beats Armament (thanks to prediction and avoidance)

Armament Beats Conqueror's (through grounding endurance against a powerful will)

Conqueror's Beats Observation (overwhelming senses)

So, I will be using the Superpower Wiki for this:

Observation -- Enhanced Senses -- Cognitive overload (sort of like what happened to Koby in Marineford), Environmental Noises

Armament -- Enhanced Body -- Energy depletion. Some major fatigue could factor in, especially during an ongoing battle. Also, they are not invincible. And, I can see that there is a limit to how long a person can use Armament. After all, I think with Luffy, he can't use Haki for a while after using Gear 4.

Conqueror's -- Will of a King -- Equal-Will Backfire, Emotional Fragility, and Collateral Friendly-Fire

Haki Affinity

I'm only using the Straw Hats as an example here. As I've said before, everyone in this crew has Haki (with access to both Armament and Observation post-timeskip) because they have grand ambitions.

During pre-timeskip, everyone sort of have nascent versions of their form of Haki (Zoro and the Breath of All Things/Asura ability and...maybe Nami and her capability to sense weather patterns). It wouldn't be until their timeskip training is when they actually hone their Haki skills.

However, affinity for a specific form of Haki is still at play here, depending on profession and preferred fighting style.

Observation

Besides Usopp and Sanji, let's have Nami, Chopper, and Jinbe have it too. Where Sanji and Jinbei, I think, is the most basic, Usopp, Nami, and Chopper's Observations are more developed to suit their professions.

Armament

Besides Zoro, I wanna give Robin Armament because of the vulnerability of her Hana-Hana limbs, Franky, and Brook (to protect his bones). I think it is confirmed that Jinbe has Armament and I honestly think he can just have an affinity for both.

Conqueror's

I'm totally fine with just Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji having Conqueror's...but I will include Vivi because she is a princess. Luffy, of course, has greater Conqueror's since he is the captain.

I'll probably make a tier list of who has the better Armament and Observation overall...is this still considered powerscaling??? Well, I think the affinities help on the matter that not everyone has a well rounded power set. Like, sure. Zoro has better Armament than Usopp, but Usopp has better Observation.

The Colors of the Will

With names like the 'Color of Observation' or 'Color of Armament'...you'd think there would be more color.

...but it's mostly black...and that's a little bit disappointing.

Granted, Haki is supposed to be invisible, although, I'm sure with the use of Observation, a user can see the 'color' of someone's Haki.

I find it funny how some people (mainly thinking about Tekking101; I think he's the only one I've come across who said this) refer to this blackening as vulcanization, which is a range of processes of hardening rubber and...well--

And, if I'm being for real, I would not mind if Luffy was the only person where you can actually see his Armament Haki because of him being made of rubber XD. Like...think about it for a minute. Look at all of his Gear 4 techniques...and remove the black coating because Armament is supposed to be invisible XD.

I tend to forget that Haki is meant to be invisible.

There's only color so that we, as the reader/watchers, can see who's using Haki.

This includes Armament Haki.

There was a video I watched some time ago...that talked about this moment specifically...and the possibility of how it can be handled in the One Piece anime remake.

The person who made the video had first saw this in the manga. Hell, I wanna say it was before this moment was animated. The person spoke how they and many others felt this one type of emotion towards this moment.

Dread.

Dread over Zoro's fate.

Then comes the anime...and it was a mood whiplash for them because of the music being used. Luffy's Fierce Attack, I believe...

For a lot who've seen this moment in the anime first (me included), this was a triumphant, badass moment for Zoro. He took all of Luffy's pain and fatigue, was told that he would not survive this...

And lived.

They may have lost to Kuma, but Zoro won by surviving.

After watching that video though...my thoughts on this have changed.

This...should not have been a moment of triumph. And last, not solely on triumph (because, yeah, Zoro in a sense 'won'. He survived).

It should be of revelation.

It was the beginning of what is to come.

And they are not ready for it.

Because, after this, Zoro was still affected by this moment. He hasn't fully healed, he's still in pain, and (if his reaction at the Pacifista charging a laser at him point blank was anything to go by) he has some flavor of PTSD from this moment.

The deeper they're getting into the Grand Line, the tougher the enemies will become.

Kuma was Mihawk in this scenario. Another taste of the dangers ahead.

And Zoro, arguably the toughest crew member of the Straw Hats, for both of these times, was used as a sort of..."strength" gauge. Endurance? If he's not ready for it, then how would the rest of the crew fair?

So...In all honestly, I kinda hope that remake (and maybe even OPLA) would actually take this more serious route. To hammer it home that this isn't just a moment of triumph.

This...was a warning. A warning to the crew that they are not ready at their current level.

A fact that comes too late when Kizaru makes his appearance in Sabaody.

One Piece/OPLA Headcanon: Reworking Nika

I think I might have an idea on how to make the Nika fruit less involved with fate and op.

I will come out and say that I always hate it when a main character gets like... god powers or something. They feel untouchable when this happens. Especially when there is no clear limit or ramification for spamming the power because the character in question is (typically) human. Another thing with Nika is that, apparently, Luffy (who's whole thing is about being free) is tethered to a prophecy. A prophecy implies that Luffy's path was predestined (unless the prophecy is more like a warning rather than something fate-related). And that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. That's the reason for my half-hate for the Nika reveal. Now, if Luffy somehow defies the prophecy, that's fine. Because, again, he's all about freedom.

1) There Were Others

I find it hard to believe that within the 800 years after JoyBoy, there hadn't been others who had eaten the Devil Fruit. I mean...why would the World Government change it's name and classification if it was never seen again after Joyboy?

I know that the fruit is sapient enough to choose someone...which I'm not sure how. By this, I mean, the Nika fruit makes it so it could reincarnate wherever the World Government is not. It's not choosing a place where the closest person it thinks it wants to be eaten by is. Maybe a populated area outside of World Government territory so it can be more likely to be consumed.

And, it's through these other consumers that the World Government is noticing its pattern.

It didn't appear near Luffy. It was brought to Windmill Village by Shanks after he attacked a Marine ship the fruit was stored in. Who's Who was able to track down the fruit and capture it before the Red-Hair pirates attacked. I don't think the fruit knew where it was heading. Hell, maybe the fruit was 'hibernates' after it reincarnated, since its now inactive.

It wouldn't be until it was eaten by Luffy that the Fruit 'wakes up' (not Awakened, just wanted to be clear there). And, maybe, this is where the 'choosing' takes place. Now awake after who knows how long, it got to 'know' Luffy, so to speak. It learns where exactly Luffy stands in terms of freedom before it choosing to Awaken as Luffy's Gear 5.

As for the ones before, the fruit didn't know what kind of person it was looking for after JoyBoy. And, I say this because I believe that slaves during Joyboy's time had manifested the Nika fruit (since it is finally confirmed that, yes, Devil Fruits are manifested from desires) and, whether or not Nika as a god actually exists outside of the fruit, the slaves wished and prayed for liberation. Maybe, the Nika fruit was 'born' at this time and Joyboy was its first consumer.

After that, the Nika fruit was eaten by an unknown amount of people over the 8 centuries. As for whether or not these consumers have ever Awakened, that's up in the air, but I like to think that they have happened because, again, the Nika fruit didn't know what kind of person it looking for.

Many times, just when it thought it found someone and allowed Awakening to happen, that consumers gets overconfident and that overconfidence got them killed. Very rarely would there be people who don't lose their heads to it, but their personality are vastly different from JoyBoy.

Once it got to know Luffy, it was probably like 'Okay, you have to be that kind of guy!'

2) The Fruit Adapts to the Consumer's Idea of Freedom

Believe it or not, freedom is subjective (and objective).

A lot of people have a different concept of freedom and, sometimes, it depends on circumstances.

Perhaps, JoyBoy's Awakening was different because he grew up in an environment where freedom and liberation.

With Luffy, it's just the freedom to do whatever you want. Perhaps the most simplistic definition of freedom. A very child-like perspective.

The Awakening may look the same, but how it works could be different, depending on the consumer's view of freedom. For all we know, JoyBoy's Awakened power was not Toon Force. (Shit, knowing Oda, it could be XD)

And, I can see why, in this case, the Gorosei was in no hurry to capture or even kill Luffy.

If they had killed Luffy, the fruit would just reincarnate as far as possible, thus another long-ass hunt for it (and more resources used to find it).

As for leaving him be, as long as he doesn't show he has the same powers as JoyBoy (thus, not an immediate threat), they don't think Luffy would pose to much of an issue.

But, they do keep an eye on his actions in the world.

4) Risk of Being Overtaken

Most Awakened Zoan users have this problem. Upon Awakening, the Zoan-users get overtaken by the will of the fruit.

However, if that user's personality/trait is aligned perfectly with the fruit, that risk seems to be avoidable. We saw this with Rob Lucci and Luffy is the same too.

However...I like me a bit of...possessed protag (it's part of why I liked the Supreme King in YGO GX).

Remember back in Punk Hazard where Zoro tells Luffy to get serious since they're now in the New World and a lapse in judgement could make them lose everything.

Gear 5 Luffy sort of acts so unserious, but clearly, Luffy still has his wits.

What if...Luffy indulges too much into Nika's power and it starts to effect Luffy. Almost like toxic positivity, in a way. Like, he becomes unable to comprehend the danger and sort of treats it like a joke.

Obviously, this endangers Luffy's freedom.

I have seen other AUs and Headcanons that tackle this concept and I love it!

I'll be frank, when it comes to prophecies, I tend to think about Greek prophecies and, a lot of times, the prophecy once spoken, is set in stone. No matter what you do, your fate in that prophecy is sealed. Look at Oedipus.

However, in real life examples (and, yes, they exist), a prophecy is as what was talked about in this post.

They already happened.

Remember the Simpsons Prediction conspiracies? They've happened before.

Several people who 'prophesized' current events were probably not clairvoyant. They've experienced something similar already.

It's more of a case of history repeating itself, especially if no one learned from it.

It doesn't take away a lot of what I've presented here, just helped me rethink (remember) the concept of prophecy.

Maybe Return to Romance?

And, to be honest, this feels more like a headcanon thing too. What with me wanting Vivi and Carrot be official Straw Hats. And wanting the thrill of adventure again. ^^;

Anyways, I'm gonna do like I did with my Bleach reMix AU. I'm probably not gonna write proper fics to the reimagined arcs, just wanted to share my idea for the AU. Not much is gonna change necessarily

I think I'm gonna be more focused on the Straw Hats ^^;

If I get some inspiration, I can try to come up with something for Koby's side of things. At least with EggHead. And, of course, gotta rework the whole Hachinosu thing.

I will say that what I got so far now mostly goes up to Wano. Not sure with Elbaf yet. Especially given everything happening in the manga right now.

One (really two) thing(s) are certain...I'm gonna make the Wano arc Zoro's arc and Elbaf Usopp's arc (with a daaaash of Robin; that reunion is still gonna happen darn it!)

I am thinking about making an AU where the Straw Hat's journey remains an adventure, while a lot of the political stuff is relegated to Koby's own journey, with his group in SWORD.

Of course, this would take some reimagining of certain arcs, because I might treat the Straw Hat's journey in the New World as a sort of "soft reboot". Dressarosa was like Alabasta, but with a twist. Not sure with the other arcs quite yet.

Same for how to structure Koby's story. I think he was reintroduced in the Levely arc. I would like to have the EggHead arc somehow be his groups' arc.

Now, I feel what sorta puts a spanner in the works is the Nika Devil Fruit and its connection to JoyBoy. I have said before that I sorta have a love-hate view with this. On one hand, it fucking epic and it's properties fit Luffy so well. On the other hand...why does Luffy have to be yet another shounen protagonist thrusted into a "chosen one" trope????

Naruto and his chakra (not his soul) being a sorta reincarnation of Asura. Ichigo's birth is, apparently, preplanned (according to Aizen) and he's a hybrid of all introduced races, which honestly feels stupid. At least, with Deku...it was more earned instead of fated.

Now, I have heard conversations about Luffy and the "Chosen One" storyline with JoyBoy would probably be Luffy just defying it outright. After all, a lot of the times, the "Chosen One" story is connected to fate or predestination...which is sort of an antithesis of freedom. Luffy would not be about that.

I do have an idea on how to rework the Nika fruit and make it so it's not one to one with JoyBoy. Mostly playing with the concept of "freedom".

a few days ago i fully realised and processed the fact that orihime and ichigo are quite literally truly and canonically married with a child.

i have known this for the past two years. and i have always disliked this due to their severe lack of chemistry and communication but that’s not the point right now..story for another day. (well it is a part of the point but whatever)

i actually thought about it. and now i’m confused. why on earth are these two married like seriously?? like oh my days they’re actuslly in a relationship..a marriage nonetheless. how am i supposed to be convinced by this i’m so confused i can’t even put it into words.

I think we're all trying the process it.

Cuz, like...I remembering rewatching/rereading the Hueco Mundo arc, which is where the radical shippers claim it "perfectly" shows how much they were meant to be...

When all I saw was how incompatible they were.

Like...Ichigo was called out for not just taking Orihime away the moment he rescued her. And, Orihime, who was shown before willing to throw hands and perfectly capable of defending herself...really did nothing in the grand scheme of things. She too was called out for not shielding Ichigo other times.

I'm standing firm that Loly was meant to be a dark reflection of Orihime.

And the whole Ichigo Hollowfying...that was not romantic in the slightest. And, yes, there are shippers who thought this was romantic...it was traumatizing. And him Hollowfying when he did had nothing to do with Orihime. It's revealed later that it was actually Zangetsu, wanting to protect Ichigo.

And, of course, one of the biggest evidence in this arc that sort of puts a spanner in the works in regards to the legitimacy of IchiHime...

No rain.

It didn't rain when Orihime left.

It rained when Rukia did.

It rained when Ichigo lost his powers again in the Fullbringer arc.

It rained when Ichigo learned about Uryu's betrayal.

It didn't rain when he learned Orihime left for Hueco Mundo.

And, while this wasn't in the Hueco Mundo arc...for someone who was so in love with Ichigo, Orihime was unable to free herself from Tsukishima's influence for Ichigo's sake. Meanwhile, Byakuya's loyalty to Ichigo was enough to keep him from fully being devoted to Tsukishima. Byakuya's (who knew Ichigo for, what, five months? And have only interacted with him only a few times?) loyalty to Ichigo was stronger than Orihime's (who knew and interacted Ichigo longer) love for Ichigo.

Let me go on to say that when it comes to the amount of time the Straw Hats were sailing together, a lot of factors could've been in play of how long it was to take sailing from the Twin Capes to Sabaody.

Clearly, I'm not taking account of the East Blue crew before braving Reverse Mountain.

That being said:

This is under the assumption Blue Planet is the same size as our planet.

Again, other factor's could've sped up the travel...mostly thinking about them floating down from the Sky Islands, though I'm not sure if that was enough to shave off some of the travel time.

And, in honesty, given everything we have now...and how long its been since this story started, Oda would be in his late 80s trying to get this darn story done XD

I would say I wonder how certain stories would've gone if certain writers have actually asked about some real life information.

Looking you, Kubo. You and the "it takes 10 days to walk from the west gate to one of the other ones". From what others have calculated, the Seireitei would be the size of Florida in this context...and we all know its not that big.

It had not occurred to me until now:

In OPLA, even getting splashed by seawater can disorientate a Devil Fruit user, as seen when Buggy got wet when his tank of doom smashed and Luffy's first fight against Arlong.

I think it is confirmed that, in the animanga, both seawater and freshwater weakens Devil Fruit users.

Which...I don't know, it feels like it makes more sense for it to just be seawater instead of both. The whole 'the ocean hates devil fruit users' and all that. Plus, freshwater is a small percentage to the world's water, so, come on...give a bit of respite. Or...well, someone have actually shared a headcanon on this in how freshwater affects DF users vs seawater. Basically, not as debilitating. I need to find that post...

The fact that getting splashed can disorientate a DF user means that having freshwater as a weakness too would not work when Luffy douses himself with water in order to fight Crocodile.

Y'all, I am so turning Vivi into a baddie in my AU XD

Cuz...Hey, I initially had her bounty be 100,000,000 because her unintentionally impersonating Zaza would very well make a lot of Celestial Dragons clutch their pearls. Then, it made me realize that this would make her part of the Worst Generation (being one of two only females along with Bonney).

And, hey, as princess of Alabasta (and descendant of Nefertari D. Lili), is it crazy to consider that Vivi could develop Conqueror's Haki?

Hell, all of this is making me want to turn the Monster Trio into a Monster Quartet. XD
