she needs to fight!!! here’s my redesign for anita :)

i felt like something was lacking in her costume and i wanted to take a stab at redesigning her so! here she is!

explanation will be under the cut :]

when i started this redesign, i knew i wanted to incorporate her cultural background a lot more. she is implied (i don’t believe they outright specify it) to practice specifically haitian voodou & both of my parents practice african traditional religions. so, i talked to my dad about different ways to connect that to her costume and he brought up west african masquerades.

i was sent many, many videos (thank u dad 🫡) of masquerades as well as celebrations of junkanoo, which is a festival that started in north america rooted in west african festival traditions & they both have bright colors & masks that i felt really lent itself to the empress costume

i knew i wanted to keep her general silhouette, but i tweaked it to better suit the masquerade & festival costumes e.g. her glove and boot cuffs being flipped.

the stripes were a common aspect, and i based the masks more on junkanoo than masquerades just because of the important meanings behind masquerading that i am not qualified to apply to a dc comics characters ajhdjsja. i also made her under armor a lot more yellow to have less people confuse it as her skin? which i’ve seen a few times.

speaking of, now onto her actual appearance. i think anita has a very cute design, but like many non-white comic characters , it is a bit of a struggle. but! that’s an easy fix.

first, i gave her knotless french curl braids, bc all the black vigilantes i draw have to have protective hairstyles apparently lmao. but also it’s a nice mix of the braids she wears in yj sometimes and her usual hair. yippee

(+ i just made her empress hair a wig, bc it’s very much more convenient & plays into the festival costume aspect)

and, finally, i made her skin tone a lot deeper bc, especially compared to her white teammates, her skin is super gray 😭 which is common for a lot of brown comic characters unfortunately. i could’ve just made her og skintone more saturated but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s a free country.

not to be back on my bullshit but as it stands I think cass and dick’s relationship has the potential to contain soooo much resentment and discomfort. two people who are not used to being meaningfully perceived are now being deeply understood by another person who is NOT their first choice for this. they know each other Too Well and are both uncomfortable by this. there is so much resentment wariness and tension to be found in their shared proximity to bruce and babs, their thought processes, personalities, etc. HOWEVER. i do think that throwing them into the emotional pressure cooker that is the bruce-is-dead era together could fix them. being forced to share the cowl and wrestling with differing ideas of batman’s legacy, family, morality, etc would end SO well actually. they would have so many screaming matches and would come out of it bonded to all hell.

It actually makes a lot of sense that Bruce was one of the few people left standing in the crowd at Haly’s Circus when Dick’s parents died.

Watching two innocent people plummet to their deaths is gruesome. It’s shocking. It can be horribly traumatic, depending on the blunt force trauma of hitting the ground. They might not have died right away. They might have bled and made awful noises that were heard even above the sounds of the crowd.

But Bruce is Batman. Bruce saw his parents get murdered right in front of him. And he knows the sounds and sights of someone dying. He’s hardened himself to stay calm in a situation like that, both through trauma and practice.

I think the image of a young Dick Grayson making eye contact with the one unshaken person in the crowd is chilling. A man standing resolute when everyone else is screaming, sadness etched across his face. But not panic. Not confusion. Resignation, maybe.

it should be illegal for reddit anime dudes to have Killua profile pictures because it contributes to the misconception that Killua is your average reddit dude anime boy like no no you dont understand. He's a gay twelve year old with infinite money and dresses exactly how you would expect a gay twelve year old with infinite money to dress. He has one of the best character arcs of all time in which at one point he does impromptu brain surgery on himself as an allegory for overcoming trauma. He has a trans little sister and aggressively corrects anyone who misgenders her. He fights with yo yos and a skateboard. He almost got killed by playing darts with an ant once. He spent a million dollars on robot shaped chocolate. He looks like tjis

rereading lpod just makes me sadder that so much of tims origin has been muddled through interpretation cause what do u MEAN the character who catalogued bruce’s grief and violence in the wake of jasons death to try and convince dick to return to robin is now a stalker who followed batman around for years. so much of tims character was driven by his own logical necessity. someone had to show dick grayson how bruce was spiralling. someone had to be robin again. someone had to hold things together.

retroactively changing things so tim was a turbo-stalker jason fan with actively abusive parents who hate him misses the point. he knew dick grayson before he knew batman. he only knew batman in the wake of jasons death. he did not view bruce’s actions as aspirational, and he did not know jason as robin, only as a ghost.

like ig him being an actual intense batman fan changes dynamics for storytelling purposes but foundationally tim drake was conceived to be an ordinary person who achieved the extraordinary. that’s the entire point!! im rattling the bars of enclosure again because this kid didn’t even care about photography before he chose to take action like come on
