The steady hum of voices blurred into noise.
“…maintenance still hasn’t fixed the second floor showers,” someone complained, “It’s been four days. four.”
Another voice chimed in immediately. “And the AC in the west wing is still broken. It smells like a damn sauna in there.”
You nodded once, barely listening.
The long conference table stretched in front of you, cluttered with half empty iced coffees, notebooks, and printed agendas that you hadn’t actually read. The room buzzed with tension and impatience simmering just beneath the surface.
Normally, you would’ve been steering the meeting, leading the discussion and fixing whatever maintenance problems your sorority sisters threw your way, as you were their president, after all. Lately, though, your attention had been somewhere else entirely.
Voices overlapped across the table, complaints stacking on top of each other, something about broken showers, something about the west wing air conditioning. You heard the words, but they didn’t stick.
Your pen tapped idly against the table. once. twice. again.
And then, your thoughts drifted..
To the last time you saw Jungkook, standing close, fingers twisted into silk like he was holding himself back from something reckless.
Back to the sound of your own voice saying something you couldn’t take back.
“…And honestly, it’s not even that good.”
Your jaw tightened slightly at the memory as Jungkook’s expression flashed behind your eyes, the way his face had gone still, dangerous in that quiet way that meant he was holding himself back from doing something reckless.. from saying something worse. from touching you again.
You swallowed, forcing your gaze back to the table.
“…y/n?” A sharp nudge hit your arm. You blinked, pulled back into the present. Lina sat beside you, brows pulled tight as she leaned slightly closer, her voice barely audible. “You weren’t listening,” she whispered.
The room had gone quiet, every pair of eyes trained on you, sharp with annoyance.
You straightened slightly in your chair, forcing composure back into place, slipping into the version of yourself everyone expected.
“Sorry,” you said. And immediately, the room stilled even further into confused silence this time.
Lina froze beside you. Across the table, someone let out a quiet scoff. “wow,” another girl muttered, not nearly quiet enough. “did hell freeze over?”
A few soft laughs followed after, sharp and disbelieving. You ignored them and instead forced yourself to focus.
“Maintenance submitted three requests already,” you said, despite the lingering distraction in your head. “I’ll escalate it to housing services myself if they don’t respond by tonight.”
but then, “why would she care anyway?” someone muttered from the far end of the table.
Your hand stilled against the papers in front of you.
“I mean,” the girl continued, shrugging lazily, “she lives in a freaking penthouse. broken showers and no AC probably aren’t exactly her problem.” a few murmurs of agreement followed. Your jaw tightened, because that wasn’t a fair judgement.
Not even close.
You leaned back slightly in your chair, fixing her with a calm, unimpressed stare. “If I didn’t care,” you said coolly, “none of this would be getting fixed in the first place.”
Silence flickered across the room. You didn’t need to raise your voice, “I filed the maintenance requests,” you continued, voice even. “I followed up with housing twice. I approved the emergency budget for temporary repairs.”
Your gaze sharpened slightly. “So if you think I don’t care,” you added, “you’re welcome to handle it yourself next time.”
The room fell quiet again, tension lingering in the air. Normally, moments like this didn’t bother you, as you would’ve brushed it off without thinking twice. But lately, everything felt sharper and more irritating. Exhausting, even.
Your fingers tightened slightly around your pen.
This wouldn’t be happening if he hadn’t walked out.
The thought came uninvited. Jungkook had a way of doing that lately, lingering in your head long after he left the room.
The rest of the meeting passed in a blur. You nodded where appropriate, and approved requests without missing a beat, your voice steady enough that no one could accuse you of neglecting your duties. By the time you closed your folder and called the meeting to an end, everything had been addressed. As usual, you carried it, and as usual, no one thanked you.
Chairs scraped loudly against the floor as everyone stood. A few girls shot curious, judgemental glances in your direction, like they’d just witnessed something mildly entertaining rather than deeply irritating.
You ignored them, gathering your papers into a neat stack, more focused on maintaining control over something... anything... than the papers themselves. If you moved quickly enough, you could slip out before anyone tried to psychoanalyze your mood further.
Unfortunately, that plan died almost immediately.
“Hey.”
Lina stepped directly into your path before you could reach the door, arms loosely crossed, her expression hovering somewhere between concern and mild suspicion. She tilted her head slightly as she looked at you, eyes narrowing just enough to let you know she wasn’t buying whatever performance you were about to put on.
“Are you, like… okay?”
You scoffed quietly, slinging your bag over your shoulder with more force than necessary. “Yeah,” you replied, already defensive. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Lina didn’t look convinced. Not even a little. “I don’t know,” she said slowly, studying your face in a way that felt unnecessarily invasive. “You just seemed really distracted in there.”
You rolled your eyes immediately, irritation sparking to life. “Well, I was distracted for, like, one second,” you shot back. “And suddenly everyone decided to gang up on me like I’d committed sorority treason, or something.”
Lina let out a quiet huff of agreement. “Okay, yeah,” she admitted. “That was a bit much. They were definitely doing the most.”
A pause followed, “They’re just looking for chances to humble you,” she added, voice dry with quiet honesty.
Your shoulders loosened slightly at the validation, but Lina wasn’t done yet.
“But still,” she continued, narrowing her eyes again, “this isn’t the first time you’ve looked like this lately. distracted, and almost… bored.”
You stiffened slightly at that. “Well, Lina,” you said flatly, “you’re imagining things.”
“Mhm,” she hummed, clearly unconvinced.
You stepped past her, heading toward the hallway, hoping movement alone would signal the end of the conversation.
“I mean,” Lina continued casually as she fell into step beside you, “you even said sorry back there.”
Your steps slowed slightly, just for a moment. “And what about it?” you asked, forcing nonchalance into your tone.
Lina stopped walking entirely and stared at you like you’d just admitted to committing tax fraud.
“Are you kidding me?” she said. “You never say sorry. Like… ever.”
You scoffed, brushing the comment off. “Yeah,” you replied dryly. “Because I’m not wrong the majority of the time.”
“C’mon.” There was something softer in her voice now, but the disbelief remained.
And that was when the thought landed.
Oh.
Right.
You slowed to a stop, the realization settling into your chest. You didn’t apologize. Ever. Not without reason, not without weighing the consequences first.
Which meant…
You turned slightly toward Lina again, brows knitting together as the thought took shape.
“Wait,” you said slowly, the words forming more carefully now. “So you’re saying it’s totally odd that I apologize… right? Even if I did something wrong?”
Lina blinked, clearly thrown off by the shift in direction.
“I mean…” she hesitated, studying your face like she was trying to figure out how this conversation had spiraled into philosophical territory. “If you did something wrong, I’d obviously want you to apologize.”
A brief pause followed. “But it’s not like you ever do,” she added honestly. “So yeah. It’s not exactly… on brand for you.”
On brand.
Yeah.
You never apologize.
That just wasn’t how you operated. Not emotionally, not socially, not even the slightest bit strategically. You weren’t careless or cruel despite what half the house liked to whisper behind your back. you were just careful, and guarded in ways they labeled arrogance.
Protective over your feelings.
And more importantly, you were almost never wrong.
Not in ways that demanded apology.
So why the hell should Jungkook be any different?
Maybe you didn’t need to apologize after all.
Maybe that stupid, fleeting instinct to fix things, to smooth things over had just been a temporary lapse in judgment brought on by exhaustion and irritation and the lingering memory of his voice still echoing in your head.
Because if you really thought about it, you hadn’t been the only one at fault. Not even close.
He was the one who disappeared. Vanished for five days without explanation, only to come back looking worn down and distant, brushing off your questions like they were inconveniences rather than completely reasonable concerns.
He was the one who left when things had started to feel… different.
Like something had shifted between you.
Of course you got defensive after, said things you probably shouldn’t have. That was... just how you protected yourself before anyone else had the chance to hurt you first.
Honestly, fuck him.
The thought settled firmly into place, sharp and satisfying in the way righteous anger always was.
He didn’t deserve your apology.
If anything, he should be the one apologizing to you.
If anything, he should be the one apologizing to you... a thought you carried so stubbornly with you all day which, logically speaking, should have kept you at home like every other day, pretending he didn’t exist. Pretending like the two of you hadn’t even spoken since your last fight. And its been what? Nearly a week?
Unfortunately, logic had never been your strongest skill when it came to Jungkook. Which was exactly why you were currently sitting in the backseat of your car, parked a few buildings down from his apartment like some kind of emotionally unstable stalker.
The irony wasn’t lost on you.
Streetlights cast long streaks across the pavement outside, their glow slipping through the tinted windows and settling faintly against your lap. the city had quieted into a strange late night stillness. distant traffic hummed somewhere far off, muted and unimportant.
Unlike the situation you had somehow managed to drag yourself into.
You shifted slightly in your seat, crossing and uncrossing your legs for what had to be the tenth time in the last five minutes. the leather beneath you creaked softly.
Your driver remained silent at the front, wisely pretending not to notice the fact that his boss’s daughter had been sitting outside a random apartment building for nearly fifteen minutes without saying a word.
humiliating.
truly.
You sighed quietly and reached for your phone, more out of restlessness than curiosity. If you were going to sit here contemplating your dignity like it was on life support, you might as well have something to distract yourself with.
Your thumb moved automatically, unlocking the screen, peeking at news notifications, emails, calendar alerts, though one headline caught your eye almost immediately.
Zhao Seo-Hwa to Host Annual Charity Gala This Saturday — City’s Elite Expected to Attend
Of course the universe would shove that in your face right now.
Your jaw tightened slightly as irritation flared to life again, sharp and immediate. you had picked up your phone for distraction, not reminders, not your mother, or the gala. not the endless expectations that came attached to your last name like an unavoidable accessory.
With an annoyed exhale, you scrolled past it, further down until another headline replaced it.
Local Delivery Worker Hospitalized After Late Night Hit-and-Run — Authorities Searching for Suspect Vehicle
Your thumb hovered briefly before tapping the article open. a grainy photo filled the screen, flashing police lights, blurred figures gathered around what looked like a crumpled delivery bike lying on its side near the curb. yellow tape stretched across the scene, stark against the darkness.
Shaking your head slightly, you exited the article with a quiet exhale. just another unfortunate story tucked into the endless cycle of bad news flooding your screen.
You locked your phone, and that was when you saw him, across the street.
Your breath stalled.
Even from this distance, you recognized the way Jungkook moved with his shoulders slightly hunched, hood pulled low over his head despite the mild weather. his hands were shoved deep into the pockets of his jacket as he walked toward his building entrance, steps steady but heavier than usual.
You glanced at the time on your phone. he was late.
Your brows knitted together slightly as you watched him approach the entrance looking more worn down than usual. He paused briefly at the door, fishing his keys from his pocket before unlocking it quickly, slipping inside without looking back.
You stared at the now closed entrance, irritation bubbling beneath your ribs again, quick and sharp. So he was just getting home now? really?
Interesting.
You leaned back into the seat, exhaling slowly as your thoughts tangled together into one massive, irritating knot.
Maybe you should just leave. seriously. Just tell the driver to go.
Forget the apology, forget the pride-swallowing humiliation. forget Jungkook and his stupid mysterious behaviour and his infuriating ability to linger in your head long after he left the room.
you really didn’t need this. didn’t need him and the emotional headache attached to his existence.
Your fingers hovered near the door handle briefly, before your phone buzzed suddenly in your hand, making you glance down automatically.
Yoona: Don’t forget!! mom expects you both at the gala. No excuses.
You stared at the message. the words felt less like a reminder and more like a slap to the face.
Right. the gala.
the real reason you were here.
Your shoulders sank slightly as reality settled back into place, heavy and unavoidable.
There it was... your choice.
Either swallow your pride and walk upstairs, apologize to Jungkook, or show up to the gala alone and explain to your mother why your ’boyfriend’ mysteriously failed to appear.
humiliation versus pride.
public embarrassment versus private dignity.
trash versus garbage.
neither option appealing.
You let out a quiet, irritated sigh. “Stay here,” you muttered to the driver. He nodded without question.
You pushed the door open and stepped out onto the sidewalk, the cool night air brushing against your skin immediately. The sound of the car door closing behind you echoed faintly through the quiet street, louder than it should have been.
Your heels clicked sharply against the pavement as you approached the entrance, each step heavier than the last. By the time you reached his door, your confidence had thinned into something dangerously close to hesitation.
This was ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous.
You were standing outside Jungkook’s apartment building like some desperate ’girlfriend’ about to beg for forgiveness... which, frankly, felt wildly inaccurate and deeply offensive to your personal brand.
You inhaled slowly, exhaled, nearly turned around, seriously considered it.
For half a second, your foot even shifted slightly, angling toward the sidewalk behind you like your body was already making the decision your pride desperately wanted.
But then, yoona’s message flashed again in your mind.
Fine.
Fine.
You reached forward before you could overthink it again and pressed the buzzer. Your hand hovered uselessly for a beat, frozen halfway to the door.
The door swung open.
Jungkook stood there, shirtless, a towel draped lazily over one broad shoulder. His hair was damp, dark strands clinging to the forehead. His dark eyes narrowed slightly at the sight of you as he scanned you head to toe with those unreadable eyes, before his expression settled into something cool and guarded.
The casual domesticity made him look like he belonged in a quiet, normal life. not in the tangled mess the two of you had made. You hadn’t expected to see this version of him tonight, especially after the way he’d walked out of the fitting room a few days ago.
The silence between you since then had been heavy, unresolved. yet your body, traitorous as always, reacted instantly, the familiar association your mind had wired into every encounter with Jungkook: sex.
It went against every moral you tried to cling to, but the pull was instinctive, embarrassing in its strength.
“Hi,” you managed, the word slipping out softer, shy in a way that felt completely unfair after everything.
“Hi,” Jungkook said back.
He looked mildly surprised to see you at his door this late, a faint twitch in his brow betraying it, but the assumption clicked into place almost immediately.
“I haven’t showered yet,” he said, voice low and rough, almost indifferent, though his gaze fell on the hem of your skirt briefly.
“No, it’s fine,” you replied quickly, smoothing an invisible crease in your skirt, forcing your tone steady. “Can I… come in?”
He blinked once, then stepped aside without a word, towel shifting against his shoulder. you walked past him, heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor, every sound seeming louder in the quiet apartment.
The apartment was painfully bland, minimalist to the point of austerity. nothing like the curated chaos of your penthouse. yet there was a quiet order to it that made your stomach twist with awareness.
He didn’t look back. Just headed straight toward his bedroom, expecting you to follow.
You did. each step making your nerves pull tighter.
Once you were in his bedroom, you perched very awkwardly at the very edge of his bed while he went back to the bathroom. You could hear him moving around, turning the tap off, opening and closing counters with quiet, unhurried sounds.
This was the same bed that had always unraveled into heat and recklessness between the two of you. now it felt foreign, almost wrong. The silence stretched, thick and heavy. your hands rested in your lap, fingers twisting the hem of your skirt as you waited for him to come out of the bathroom.
A moment later, Jungkook reappeared in the doorway, still shirtless. he rummaged through his wardrobe for something, back partially turned to you, muscles shifting smoothly under golden skin with every small movement.
You couldn’t help but notice the subtle change in his movements that seemed heavier somehow. There was an exhaustion to him, like something had worn him down long before you arrived.
The last time you’d seen him like this had been a few days ago… when he’d approached you at the fitting room out of the blue.
Your gaze drifted to his hand, catching on the faint bruise blooming across his knuckles. one you were certain hadn’t been there before. But instead of questioning him, you let yourself sink into your own thoughts, swallowing the question before it ever made it to your lips.
Impatience cracked through you in the next few seconds as he was taking way too much time, and you wanted to get this over with as soon as possible. The apology, the gala, the invitation you’d come to force out.
“Jungkook…” you started, voice sharp with impatience bleeding through because he still wasn’t moving fast enough for your fraying nerves.
“Yeah,” he murmured, low and amused in that detached way of his. he turned so he was facing you fully. “Sorry.”
He crossed the room in two unhurried strides and dropped onto the bed beside you. Before you could speak, his hand found your waist, and he pulled you onto his lap with effortless strength. The heat of his bare skin seeped through the thin fabric of your skirt, making your breath hitch despite yourself.
He leaned back, lying down fully, muscles shifting as he guided your hips forward.
“What—” you gasped, confused, the word slipping out in a startled rush.
“C’mere,” he said, voice dropping even lower, rough with clear assumption. his hands slid to your thighs, urging you higher, eyes half lidded and dark. “Sit on my face.”
Your face burned instantly. A violent, humiliating rush of heat spread from your neck to your cheeks, freezing you in place mid motion, body caught between instinct and sheer disbelief.
“What the fuck?–”
The words were out sharp, somewhere between outrage and mortification.
Jungkook stilled beneath you.
Actually stilled.
“I thought you wanted to do it.” His brows pulled together slightly, confusion flickering across his face like he’d misread something fundamental.
This wasn’t why you were here.
And the audacity of him to assume that you were!
The casualness of his statememt like it was obvious, inevitable, made something hot and furious twist inside your chest.
“No! That’s not why I came here!” Your voice came out louder, defensive and tight, cracking at the edges.
You scrambled off him immediately, heels hitting the floor with a sharp click, fingers fumbling uselessly at the hem of your skirt as you yanked it back into place. The fabric suddenly felt too short.
But really, who were you kidding. After nearly every fight, every time you’d coldly reminded him there would be nothing between you but sex… he had no reason to think tonight was any different.
Especially not after the way things had ended between you last time, and the way you had shut him out.
Jungkook pushed himself upright slowly, confusion settling deeper into his expression now, mouth parting slightly as he watched you pace once... twice... before stopping near the foot of the bed.
Silence settled between you.. not the usual kind that ended in tangled sheets and bruised hips.
This one felt… more exposed.
“Then why are you here?” he asked finally.
Your throat tightened as you crossed your arms tightly over your chest, nails digging into your own skin, gaze fixed stubbornly somewhere over his shoulder.
“Well…” You hesitated, “I wanted to say a few things…”
You paused, biting the inside of your cheek.
Should you apologize first? Or just rip off the band-aid with the gala? The silence stretched for another beat.
“I...” you started again, then stopped, suddenly hyperaware of the fact that your pulse hadn’t properly settled since five seconds ago... since he’d grabbed your thighs and nearly dragged you onto his face like it was the most natural thing in the world.
God.
Your brain still hadn’t recovered.
“Is it hot in here..?” you blurted, forcing out a nervous little chuckle that sounded painfully fake even to your own ears.
Jungkook didn’t answer immediately. he just watched you.
Your gaze darted away from his face, only to land squarely on his chest again. damp from the shower he clearly hadn’t taken yet. muscles shifting slightly as he leaned back, completely unbothered.
Heat rushed straight to your face.
“Can you, uh…” you started, clearing your throat awkwardly, forcing your eyes upward. “At least put a shirt on?”
For a second, he just looked at you, eyes flicking over your flushed cheeks, the way your fingers twisted the hem of your skirt, the way you refused to meet his gaze for longer than a second as something faintly amused softened his expression. not mocking. just... mildly entertained.
“Yeah,” he muttered finally, grabbing a shirt from the edge of the bed, pulling it over his head in one smooth motion. You hated how your eyes followed the movement before you could stop them, hated it even more when he caught you doing it.
Jungkook sat back down on the edge of the bed afterward, elbows resting on his knees, posture relaxed while you remained standing awkwardly a few feet away like you didn’t know what to do with your own body.
God, this was humiliating.
You drew in a slow breath, forcing yourself to focus. Enough stalling.
“Remember when yoona approached us and…” you began, voice quieter now and carefully controlled. “I announced you as my boyfriend?”
Jungkook’s dark eyes narrowed slightly, but he gave a small, almost imperceptible nod. “Yeah.”
“Well… she told my mom.” You winced internally at how ridiculous it sounded out loud. “And you know... she uh, wants to meet the both of us.”
“There’s this charity gala thing she’s hosting, and… they’ve already made reservations for the both of us. that’s why I called you to the styling lounge a few days ago…”
You cringed, the memory of that disastrous fitting room encounter flashing through your mind. your voice trailed off awkwardly.
Jungkook watched you in silence for a long moment. the casual amusement from earlier had completely vanished, replaced by that distant mask. He tilted his head slightly, studying you like he was weighing every word.
“So,” he said slowly, voice quieter now, stripped of its earlier edge. “Let me get this straight.”
You swallowed.
“Since I’m apparently your boyfriend’,” he continued, gaze locked onto yours, unblinking. “Your mom found out… made reservations… planned this whole thing...”
He paused, just long enough to make the weight of his words sink in. “And now you’re here,” he finished, voice flattening, “because you need me to play along.”
The silence that followed pressed against your ribs.
“I just...” you swallowed, forcing yourself to hold his gaze. “I thought… we could make some kind of arrangement.”
His brows pulled together slightly. “Arrangement?” he repeated, letting out a short, humorless breath after, the corner of his mouth twitching into not quite a smirk, but close enough to feel cutting.
“You really do only come to me when you need something, don’t you?”
“Well, I didn’t come to you for sex now did I?” you bit back almost immediately, defense creeping up like a solid wall. your voice came out sharp, laced with irritation.
Jungkook’s gaze didn’t waver. he leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on his knees, the movement making the muscles in his shoulders flex under the low light.
“True,” he murmured, voice low and almost lazy. “Usually you don’t bother with the talking part at all.”
You scoffed softly, but it came out thinner than intended, brittle around the edges.
“Well, maybe if you didn’t assume things every time I walked into your apartment, we wouldn’t have this problem,” you shot back, chin lifting slightly, defense settling firmly into place.
Jungkook let out a quiet breath through his nose, not quite irritated, just tired.
“That’s funny,” he muttered.
Your brows knit slightly. “What’s funny?”
“You acting like I pulled that assumption out of nowhere.” His gaze lifted again, locking onto yours with quiet intensity.
“When was the last time,” he went on, voice low, almost thoughtful, like he was genuinely trying to remember, “You came here and didn’t expect it to end in my bed?”
Heat crawled up your neck because he wasn’t wrong. and the way he said it calm, matter-of-fact, made it worse than if he’d laughed.
You scoffed, forcing the sound out before the embarrassment settled too deep.
“Well,” you shot back quickly, folding your arms tighter across your chest, “you’re usually the one dragging me back to your place, so I don’t know what point you think you’re making.”
A quiet exhale left him, not quite a laugh, not quite frustration. “Dragging you?” he repeated, brows lifting slightly, voice still infuriatingly calm.
His tongue pressed briefly against the inside of his cheek, like he was holding something back.
“Right,” he muttered. “Because you’re never the one gripping my arm like you’re going to combust if we don’t get somewhere private in the next five minutes.”
Your face burned hotter.
God.
You hated how specific that sounded.
Hated even more how vividly your body remembered exactly what he meant.
Jungkook watched you struggle for a second longer before leaning back slightly, voice quieter now. “So yeah,” he said. “You showing up here out of nowhere… acting nervous… not saying what you want?”
he pauses, “Forgive me for thinking it was the same reason as always.”
“Look,” you said finally, dragging the words out, careful to keep your voice steady even though your fingers twisted the hem of your skirt. “I know you don’t owe me anything, and we’re not even…” you gulped.
“But I can’t back out of this, and I’m hopeless. I just need you to pretend to be my boyfriend like you did before. Just for one night.”
You paused, glancing around his apartment, letting your eyes linger just long enough to judge the “blandness” of it, the lack of any real… flair. your nose twitched slightly. “I know fancy gala’s are not your kind of scene either. Clearly it isn’t your kind of environment.”
He raised an eyebrow at that, dark eyes flicking to you.
“But I need you for this,” you added, voice quickening, defensive. “I can even pay you if you want...”
“Pay me? for what?” His voice was flat but sharp. He got to his feet slowly, and you instinctively took a step back, your heels clicking against the floor.
“To make you come if that makes it worth your time,” you finished quickly, words rushing out before you could second guess them.
Jungkook blinked once. “You’re serious,” he muttered, more to himself than to you.
You straightened slightly, lifting your chin out of habit, pride kicking in even as your stomach twisted.
“It’s not a big deal,” you said stiffly. “People get paid to attend things all the time.”
His jaw shifted faintly. a muscle ticked there, subtle but noticeable.
You hated that he wasn’t saying anything yet as the silence made your chest tighten.
“And…” you added, tone sharpening defensively, “Usually money fixes things for me.”
That made him look at you properly. like you’d said something incredibly predictable.
“I don’t want your fucking money, y/n.”
He stepped closer, enough to make you aware of how little space there was between you now.
“God,” he muttered under his breath, dragging a hand down his face. “You’re such a fucking princess, aren’t you?”
Your jaw tightened instantly. “Jungkook, come on,” you snapped, irritation flaring. “Just name the price and I’ll give...”
He let out a short breath through his nose, something between disbelief and annoyance. “Not everything runs on your dad’s credit card,” he said flatly.
You folded your arms tighter across your chest, lifting your chin slightly.
“Well,” you said coolly, unable to stop yourself, “it usually works like that for me.”
Then you forced yourself to keep going before your pride talked you out of it.
“Look,” you said, voice tightening despite your effort to keep it level. “This isn’t about money. It’s about damage control.”
That made his gaze sharpen slightly.
“My mom already told people you’re coming,” you continued, more controlled now. “yoona ran her mouth, and now there are reservations, seating arrangements… the whole thing.”
You exhaled slowly. “I can’t back out without making it worse,” you added. “And I’m not dragging some random guy into it as a replacement.”
“You already played the part once,” you finished. “So just do it again.”
Jungkook didn’t answer right away. Instead, his eyes narrowed slightly, studying your face like he was picking apart everything you weren’t saying.
“And how are you so sure yoona isn’t playing you again?” he asked finally.
Your expression changed instantly. a small falter. a crack. Like you hadn’t expected that question at all.
“You told me yourself she’s not one to be trusted,” he added, voice calm, just factual.
“Yeah… but...” you started, your voice catching slightly before you could stop it.
Your gaze dropped to the floor. “It’s my mom, Jungkook…” you said quietly. and that was the first time your voice didn’t sound sharp.
You swallowed. “I haven’t seen her properly or spoken to her in years,” you admitted, fingers tightening around the hem of your skirt.
The words felt strange leaving your mouth. too exposed.
“And this is the first time I’ve heard she’s… interested,” you continued, voice softer now, almost uncertain. “Or even cares enough to know what’s happening in my life.”
Silence settled between you again.
Jungkook didn’t interrupt. he just watched you properly now. like he was seeing something different than before.
Your throat tightened slightly, and you forced your shoulders back, trying to recover some of that usual composure.
“I’m not asking you to care about it,” you added quickly, tone stiffening again. “I just need you to show up.”
There. back to control.
Silence stretched between you again, heavier now, not sharp like before, but something quieter.
Jungkook didn’t answer right away. his gaze lingered on your face a second longer than before, like he was noticing something you hadn’t meant to show. the tightness in your jaw, the way your fingers were still curled into the hem of your skirt.
Like he’d noticed the weakness, and chose not to point it out.
A slow breath left him.
“Fine.” the word landed simply. “I’ll come.”
You blinked.
Wait. That was it?
“What?” you asked before you could stop yourself. “You will?”
“You need me there,” he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “So I’ll be there.”
That was all. no conditions, no teasing.
And somehow, that made something inside your chest loosen slightly. not enough to feel safe, or grateful, but enough that the tight knot sitting under your ribs eased, just a little.
“Oh.” you cleared your throat quickly, nodding once like you were acknowledging something purely transactional.
“Okay then.”
Your hand moved almost automatically, pulling your phone from your bag. You checked the time, more out of habit than necessity, but the glowing numbers gave you the perfect excuse to move things along.
It was late. Too late to still be standing here like this.
“Okay then…” you repeated, quieter this time, already shifting your weight toward the door.
“It’s… late,” you added, brushing an invisible crease from your skirt. “I have to get going.”
You didn’t look at him when you said it.
You didn’t thank him either. didn’t trust yourself to make it sound casual if you did.
Jungkook watched you for a second. “Do you have a ride home?” he asked, following the natural end of the conversation.
“Yeah,” you answered quickly. “My driver’s just outside.”
Jungkook gave a small nod and moved ahead of you, walking toward the door. You followed a step behind, heels clicking softly against the floor, a sound that felt strangely familiar in this space.
You passed through the living room, already halfway to the door when something caught your eye.
A small glint of gold against the dark surface of the console table.
You slowed just slightly.
Your hair clutch. the one with the tiny pearl detailing along the edge.
You’d sworn you misplaced it months ago. torn your room apart looking for it once, muttering under your breath about careless house staff and terrible luck.
Yet there it was, resting neatly against the corner of the table. Placed, like it belonged there.
You looked away almost immediately, forcing your gaze forward before Jungkook could notice the shift in your expression.
You must’ve left it here by accident... that’s what you told yourself.
Lost in the chaos of some late night, half dressed and irritated, rushing out without checking the mirror.
Not because you’d intentionally left it behind.
Not because some part of you liked the idea of leaving something of yours here, like a reminder... proof you’d been here.
No.
You swallowed, stepping past the table without another glance.
The door clicked shut behind you with a soft sound. cool night air brushed against your skin, a quiet relief after the warmth of his apartment.
You stepped forward slightly, heels settling against the polished corridor floor.
Jungkook stayed just behind you, one hand still resting against the door for a second before letting it fall to his side.
Silence stretched between you, awkward and heavy.
You shifted your weight, glancing toward the elevator at the end of the hall, then back at him.
say it.
The thought came sharp and sudden.
Now was the time. not inside his apartment, not where everything felt too close and too charged.
Out here, it should’ve been easier.
Your lips parted slightly.
“Jungkook, I...”
The words stalled, the memory of the fitting room flashed through your mind, your voice sharp, cruel, defensive. the things you’d thrown at him without thinking. the way his expression had gone completely unreadable after.
You hadn’t meant half of it.. you knew that.
And yet, your pride clawed up your throat before the apology could form properly.
You hated apologizing.
Hated the way it made you feel small.. like you were handing someone leverage they didn’t deserve.
Still… something twisted uncomfortably in your chest.
You swallowed, forcing yourself to try again. “I… about earlier...”
And then,
your stomach growled.
Loud.
Sharp enough to echo faintly in the quiet hallway.
You froze. every muscle in your body locked in place as heat flooded your face instantly, crawling up your neck and into your cheeks.
God.
Not now.
Not in front of him.
Your jaw tightened as you stared straight ahead, refusing to look at him, refusing to acknowledge it like maybe if you ignored it hard enough, the moment would undo itself.
Silence followed, mortifying this time. and somehow worse than if he’d laughed. Because Jungkook didn’t.
You could feel his gaze on you though, “Have you eaten?” he asked finally.
His voice wasn’t mocking, and somehow, that made the embarrassment burn even hotter under your skin.
You let out a short, awkward breath, forcing a small shrug like the question didn’t matter.
“I... yeah,” you said quickly. “Earlier.”
The lie came out too fast, too smooth to sound believable.
You avoided looking at him, focusing instead on the numbers above the elevator like they were suddenly fascinating.
Jungkook didn’t call you out, didn’t point out the obvious. he just watched you quietly for a second, like he was weighing whether to push further, and then chose not to.
“Alright.” a small nod.
You shifted your weight slightly, already preparing to step into the elevator once it arrived.
Then, “The convenience store down the block is still open,” he added.
You frowned faintly, turning toward him.
“What?”
He shrugged once, expression neutral. “The one you go to,” he clarified. “They’ll still have food.”
Your breath stalled.
“You usually stop there when it’s late,” he continued, voice even. “Figured you might want something.”
Your stomach twisted slightly. not just from hunger this time... from something sharper.
He noticed?
Enough times to remember, and to say it like it was fact.
Your gaze dropped briefly to the floor, throat tightening faintly.
That stupid store. bright fluorescent lights, plastic wrapped shelves, cheap heated snacks sitting behind glass.
The exact kind of place you’d never be caught dead in during the day.
Not in your usual circles, not in front of people who knew your name.
And yet some nights, when your head felt too loud or your stomach twisted too tight to ignore, you ended up there anyway, standing under harsh white lighting in an oversized puffer jacket thrown over designer clothes, looking painfully out of place no matter how much you tried to blend in.
Everyone else dressed in hoodies, sneakers, adorned tired faces from long shifts or late classes. The only thing that ever matched the rest of them was your expression of being completely done and exhausted.
There were nights you went there after leaving his apartment.. Still warm, still restless, needing something salty and simple to settle the strange emptiness afterward.
And sometimes, you went there telling yourself it was just because it was nearby. Convinient.
Not because some part of you wondered if he’d show up.. if you’d hear the low hum of his car outside.
If the door would chime and he’d walk in like he did that night, when you were standing there with a mentaiko in hand, furious and hurt and convinced he’d been the reason behind minho dumping you out of the blue. Jungkook’s car pulling up outside like he’d known exactly where to find you.
Your fingers tightened slightly around your bag.
“Oh,” you said quietly.
“I’ll… eat at home,” you added after a moment, lifting your chin slightly, forcing your voice back into something steadier. “My driver’s waiting.”
Jungkook studied you for a second longer before nodding once. “Alright.” he replied, simple. no teasing edge to it. no joke made at your expense.
He just… accepted it. Like noticing your habits wasn’t unusual.
Like they had never been secrets to begin with.
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. You stepped inside before you could think too hard about it, fingers tightening slightly around your bag.
“Goodnight,” you said, voice quieter than you intended.
Jungkook didn’t move from where he stood.
“Night.”
The doors slid shut between you.
And for a brief second, as the elevator began its descent, your reflection stared back at you in the mirrored wall, not ruined the way it usually was when you left his apartment— lipstick smudged, hair tangled, mascara faintly blurred beneath your eyes, marks blooming dark along your neck.
Your appearance was completely intact this time, composed in the way you were always meant to be seen.
And yet, something about it felt… wrong.
Because for the first time, it wasn’t your appearance that was disheveled.
It was everything underneath.
The night of the gala arrived wrapped in red instead of black, for obvious reasons.
First of all, the bodice of the black one had been completely wrong, suffocating your chest, pressing too tightly against your ribs until breathing itself felt like effort.
And the main reason... Jungkook had ripped it off you after you’d tried it on in the fitting room, during that heated argument that led to—
You pinched the inside of your arm sharply.
Enough. You weren’t thinking about that now.
Not the sound of fabric tearing, not the way anger had blurred into something far more reckless.
You inhaled slowly through your nose, forcing your thoughts back into place.
Honestly… you felt a little better now. strangely enough.
You and Jungkook had never argued with that much intensity before. not like that. It had felt like too many unsaid things crashing into each other at once, weeks of tension finally snapping under pressure. And on top of everything, you had every right to be defensive.
He hadn’t been transparent.
He’d ghosted you for five days straight, completely vanished right after you’d made what felt like a breakthrough between the two of you.
Of course you reacted. Anyone would have.
Apologizing to him, though… you hadn’t exactly gone through with it.
But you did go to his apartment... even if the ulterior motive had been to convince him to play your boyfriend for tonight’s gala… you still showed up.
Even if apologizing wasn’t exactly something written into your textbooks.
Still, you were oddly glad your stomach had betrayed you with a growl before you could say anything real. Because what if it had made things awkward between you?
More awkward than they already were?
All you’d ever been comfortable with when it came to Jungkook was arguing at most, ripping each other’s clothes until the tension burned hot enough to spill over into something physical.
Something that didn’t require admitting anything out loud.
You exhaled slowly, eyes drifting to your reflection.
And… surprisingly... things weren’t awkward now.
Not really. Because he was here... coming to pick you up.. despite everything.
You squeezed your eyes shut briefly, pressing your lips together.
“Then stop trying.”
“Yeah… I think I will.”
The memory echoed faintly, unwelcome but persistent. you shoved it to the back of your head.
At least Jungkook was helping you out with this.. that counted for something.
The night air brushed cool against your skin as you moved toward the curb where Jungkook’s car idled quietly at the front.
The driver’s door opened, and then he stepped out.
Your breath stalled for half a second.
He was dressed in a suit you’d chosen, dark, clean-cut, perfectly fitted along his shoulders and waist like it had been tailored specifically for him. He looked... effortlessly intimidating.
His gaze landed on you immediately, taking you in from head to toe in a way that felt far too deliberate to be accidental. He didn’t say anything at first, just watched. And somehow, that felt worse than words.
“Well?” you asked, lifting your chin faintly, voice edged with practiced confidence, breaking the silence before it stretched too far.
You were holding the edge of your dress carefully between your fingers, making sure the fabric didn’t catch under your heels.
Jungkook’s gaze flicked briefly to your hand, then back up to your face.
“You’ll survive the stairs like that?” he asked evenly, nodding slightly toward the way you were gripping your dress.
Your jaw tightened faintly. “I’d rather not faceplant in front of half the city,” you replied coolly.
A faint shift tugged at the corner of his mouth, not quite a smile, but close enough to feel like one. His gaze moved again, slow this time, taking in the slit of your dress, the way the red fabric curved along your body, the neat bun at the back of your head.
“Red,” he said finally.
Your fingers tightened slightly around the fabric. “What about it?” you asked, tone guarded.
A brief pause. “Nothing,” he replied calmly. “It suits you.”
You swallowed once, looking away before he could catch the reaction. “Are we going or are you planning to stand here all night?” you asked instead, brushing past him slightly before he could say anything else.
He didn’t answer, just stepped ahead and opened the passenger door for you.
You hesitated for half a second, barely noticeable, before sliding into the seat, carefully gathering the fabric of your dress inside.
The door shut softly behind you. Moments later, Jungkook settled into the driver’s seat, the low hum of the engine filling the quiet space between you.
Neither of you spoke at first.
The car pulled away from the curb smoothly.
And almost immediately, you straightened slightly in your seat.
“Okay,” you said, voice steady now. “We need to go over this again.”
Jungkook didn’t look at you, just kept his eyes on the road. “We’ve been over it,” he replied.
“I know,” you said quickly. “We’re doing it again.”
A quiet exhale left him, not annoyed, just tolerant.
You took that as permission to continue. “When we get there,” you began, fingers tightening slightly around your dress, “you stay close. Not too close... just enough that it looks natural.”
A brief pause, “And don’t wander off unless I tell you,” you added.
His brow lifted slightly. “Unless you tell me?” he repeated.
“Yes,” you said stiffly. “Because if Yoona tries something, or if my mother...”
You stopped abruptly, the words catching in your throat before you could finish them.
Silence settled inside the car for a moment.
“And,” you continued quickly, forcing composure back into your tone, “if anyone asks, we’ve been seeing each other for a few months.”
Another beat passed, before Jungkook finally spoke.
“What kind of seeing each other?”
Your brows pulled together slightly.
“What?”
He glanced at you briefly this time. “Casual?” he asked. “Serious?”
Your breath hitched faintly. That thought... hadn’t occurred to you. not fully, nor in words.
You shifted slightly in your seat, fingers tightening instinctively around the edge of your dress, keeping the slit from falling too far open.
“It doesn’t matter,” you said after a moment, voice clipped and controlled.
“It does,” Jungkook replied evenly. Not argumentative, just factual.
You exhaled slowly through your nose.
“Serious,” you said finally.
“If it looks casual, my mother won’t believe it,” you added quickly. “And Yoona will absolutely pick it apart.”
Silence followed. “Fine,” he said at last. “And that means what exactly?” he added calmly.
You frowned faintly. “What do you mean?”
“What does serious look like to you?”
You hesitated, annoyance flickered across your face.
“You stay close,” you began stiffly. “Not glued to me. Just enough that it looks natural.”
Your fingers tightened slightly in the fabric pooled over your thigh. “And if someone important approaches,” you continued, forcing composure into your tone, “You touch me first.”
Jungkook glanced at you briefly. “Touch you where?”
Heat crept up your neck instantly. “You know exactly what I mean.”
“Spell it out.”
You shot him a glare. “My waist,” you snapped. “Or my back.”
“And occasionally my hand.”
Silence settled between you again. The city lights streaked past the windows, casting soft gold reflections across the dashboard.
“You nervous?” Jungkook asked after a while.
Your head turned sharply toward him. “No.” it came out too fast, too sharp.
His mouth shifted faintly at the corner. “We’re almost there,” he said.
Your stomach dipped slightly. Turning toward the window, you watched as the venue came into view, glowing lights spilling across polished stone, people gathering near the entrance, flashes of cameras catching against glass.
Your fingers tightened again around the edge of your dress.
You hadn’t been to a gala like this in a while.
Galas used to feel like second skin, endless evenings spent smiling politely beside your father while he entertained investors and partners. But with him overseas most of the time now, those appearances had grown fewer, more distant.
And you couldn’t even remember the last time you’d attended one of your mother’s events, but you knew how grand they were.
The car slowed to a stop, then parked.
Your pulse thudded once against your ribs.
Jungkook stepped out first. You gathered the fabric of your dress carefully before stepping out after him, heels meeting polished stone with a sharp click.
The lights felt brighter outside. you barely had time to steady yourself before your heel caught slightly against the edge of the fabric, a small misstep enough for your balance to tilt dangerously forward.
Before you could faceplant onto the floor, a firm hand caught your arm, another settling at your waist.
Your breath hitched sharply. Jungkook’s grip was firm, keeping you upright before you could fully stumble. “Careful,” he murmured, falling into step beside you.
Your jaw tightened instantly as you straightened sharply, pulling yourself out of his hold the moment your balance returned.
“I’m fine,” you muttered under your breath.
His mouth tilted faintly at the corner. “Sure,” he said lightly. “Looked graceful from my angle.”
You shot him a glare. “If you mention that again,” you said quietly, voice tight with irritation, “I will personally make sure you regret coming tonight.”
That almost made him smile.
Almost.
Instead, his hand returned, this time deliberately settling at your waist, like you’d told him to in the car.
Your breath caught slightly as this touch felt different.
“Relax,” he murmured quietly near your ear. “You said serious, remember?”
And before you could respond, the flash of a few cameras went off nearby, nearly blinding you.
You flinched instinctively, blinking hard as white spots burst across your vision. voices began to rise around you, hushed but excited.
Jungkook’s grip tightened slightly around you as you made your way toward the entrance with careful steps, your confidence slipping just enough that you found yourself lowering your gaze, letting the loose strands of your hair fall forward to shield your face.
You knew people were staring as, you weren’t exactly a sight they’d seen in a very long while.
You looped your hand around Jungkook’s bicep without thinking, holding him close to you as you walked.
Oddly enough, it made you feel relieved to have him beside you, in a place full of people you’d spent years avoiding.
The irony of it settled uncomfortably in your chest.
Out of everyone in this suffocating room, people who had known your name, your family, your childhood. the only person who felt remotely safe to stand beside… was him.
You exhaled slowly through your nose. “Don’t let go,” you muttered under your breath, barely moving your lips.
Jungkook didn’t answer immediately, but his arm shifted slightly, his hand settling more firmly at your waist. “I wasn’t planning to,” he murmured quietly.
The doors opened fully, and the noise hit you all at once—soft music, crystal glasses clinking, voices layered over in polished laughter all around. The grand hall stretched wide before you, chandeliers casting gold across marble floors, servers weaving between clusters of perfectly dressed guests, conversations flowing like carefully rehearsed performances.
You barely made it a few steps inside before—
“Y/n!”
You stiffened instantly. Yoona approached quickly as that same bright, polished smile spread across her face. “Look at you,” she beamed warmly, eyes sweeping over you from head to toe. “You look incredible.”
Her gaze shifted immediately to Jungkook. “Well,” she added smoothly, lips curving slightly, “I see you actually brought him.”
You felt Jungkook’s hand shift faintly at your waist deliberately. Yoona’s eyes flicked between the two of you, measuring, before her smile widened again.
“Come,” she said brightly, reaching for your wrist before you could react. “There are people dying to see you.”
Your stomach dropped slightly at that sentence. But before you could protest, she was already guiding you deeper into the hall.
And the moment you saw them, a cluster of girls stood gathered near one of the lounge sections, dressed in perfectly tailored gowns, diamonds catching the light as they laughed softly among themselves, you slowed instantly.
No.
Absolutely not.
You recognized them immediately.. the daughters of elite families, the same ones you’d been forced to befriend growing up. The same ones who smiled sweetly in public… and shredded each other apart in private.
Your grip around Jungkook tightened without meaning to as you subtly angled your body, trying to slow your steps.
Maybe if you turned now... maybe if you...
Too late. “Look who’s here,” Yoona called out brightly.
Every single head turned at once, and the moment their eyes landed on you, recognition sparked across their faces, hungry and curious.
You leaned slightly closer into Jungkook without realizing it, and beside you, he noticed the absolute horror in your face.
His voice dropped low near your ear. “Friends?” he murmured quietly.
You forced a tight smile. “Unfortunately,” you whispered back.
A burst of overly sweet voices collided with you next few minutes, bright smiles, exaggerated compliments that made your skin crawl, yet somehow, you were polite enough to respond without snapping. Bits and fragments of questions floated at you, ricocheting in a blur of, “y/n, you’ve gotten even prettier!” “dads’s still away?” “pre-law? still the eternal pessimist, I bet!”
You answered politely, your mind mostly elsewhere, barely processing the flood. Then, inevitably, their eyes fell on Jungkook, and the questions sharpened, curious, probing: “And… who’s this?” “How long have you two been seeing each other?” You could feel Jungkook’s presence tighten beside you, a silent promise to handle whatever came next.
And there you were, sandwiched between nostalgia, judgment, and desire, acutely aware that Jungkook was the only one keeping you grounded through it all.
You were about to speak further when a familiar, deliberate voice cut through the murmurs, more amused than anything else in the room.
“Quite the gathering tonight,” it said, just close enough to brush your awareness.
You turned slightly, and your heart skipped. The blonde pompadour guy, with the patek philippe nautilus that was totally not a replica, cunning-eyed jerk-face you’d had a near ego-off with at the fitting room, filled your vision. Jimin? Was that his name? You barely remembered.
He leaned casually against the edge of the hallway, arms crossed loosely, every inch of him radiating effortless control. His gaze flicked over the crowd before landing squarely on you, like he had all the time in the world, and that you were exactly where he wanted to look.
“The estranged daughter finally makes an appearance,” he said, voice smooth with quiet amusement, like he’d been waiting to use that line all evening.
“Didn’t realize I was being monitored,” you replied coolly, lifting your chin just enough to meet his stare head on.
His lips curved faintly, pleased, like he’d expected that answer. “Hard not to notice when half the room starts whispering,” he said lightly, gaze dragging over you in a way that felt far too deliberate to be polite. “You clean up well.”
His eyes traced the line of your dress, slowly assessing...lingering just a fraction too long at the slit along your thigh.
And then they paused, because Jungkook’s hand had shifted.
You hadn’t even registered it at first, the subtle slide of his palm along your outer thigh, disappearing just beneath the slit of your dress, resting there like it belonged.
Jimin’s gaze lingered on Jungkook’s hand for a beat too long before lifting, finally looking at him properly this time, like he was reassessing the situation from the beginning.
Before he could say anything, a sharp exhale sounded from behind him. “Oh, for god’s sake.” Yoona appeared at his shoulder, rolling her eyes as she looked between the three of you, clearly displeased by whatever silent tension she’d just walked into. she reached forward and nudged Jimin lightly in the arm.
“Stop lurking like that,” she muttered under her breath, though loud enough for all of you to hear. “You look ridiculous.”
Jimin didn’t even turn immediately, the faintest smirk still sitting at the corner of his mouth. “I was greeting our guest,” he replied lazily.
“Harassing,” Yoona corrected flatly. Then her attention shifted to you, expression smoothing instantly into something brighter.
“y/n,” she said, tone lighter now, as if nothing awkward had just happened. “You remember Jimin, right?”
“Am I supposed to?” you asked, genuinely, your brows knitting faintly, because you really didn’t.
You’d never seen him at family dinners, never heard your mother mention his name, never once caught sight of that annoyingly composed face across any of the endless formal gatherings you’d been dragged to as a child either. The first time you’d ever seen him, properly seen him, was a few days ago, in that fitting lounge, trading thinly veiled insults over overpriced fabric.
Yoona blinked once, clearly not expecting that answer.
Jimin, on the other hand, looked delighted. A quiet laugh escaped him, like he’d just been handed something entertaining.
“That’s a little insulting,” he murmured, placing a hand lightly over his chest in mock offense. “I’m wounded.”
Yoona rolled her eyes again. “He’s my stepbrother,” she clarified, turning back to you. “My dad’s son. From before he married our mom.”
Your expression shifted slightly as the pieces settled into place. Stepbrother to yoona, not you. That explained the unfamiliarity and the reason his face felt so foreign despite standing in the middle of your family’s event.
“He’s never here, actually,” Yoona said with a small scoff, folding her arms loosely. “This is his first time showing up to a family event in… what, three years?”
She shot Jimin a sideways glance, lips curling faintly. “Jimin lives a very… outlandish little life in the Poconos, apparently.”
Jimin didn’t even glance at her as his gaze stayed on you. “Seems I came back just in time, though.”
Your brows pulled together faintly. “For what exactly?” you asked coolly.
Jimin’s smile deepened just enough to show teeth. He didn’t answer immediately, instead his gaze dipped briefly toward Jungkook’s hand still resting against your thigh, fingers spread like he had no intention of moving them.
Then Jimin looked back at your face. “For entertainment,” he said casually.
Yoona let out an exasperated sigh. “God, you’re insufferable.”
Jungkook hadn’t spoken yet, but you felt the shift in him, the way his fingers pressed slightly more firmly into your thigh, not enough to hurt, just enough to remind. A warning disguised as touch.
When he finally spoke, his voice was calm. “Family reunion?” Jungkook asked, glancing briefly at Yoona before returning his gaze to Jimin.
Jimin’s mouth curved faintly, like he’d been waiting for that. “Oh, relax,” he said easily, tone light but pointed. “Your girlfriend and I aren’t family.” Then he added, almost lazily, “We’re not related by blood.” The implication hung there, quiet but sharp. “Just so you know I’m not crossing any weird lines by flirting with her.”
Jungkook’s gaze snapped to him, lips tilting just enough to make it clear he was amused, but deadly serious. “I’m not worried about any lines,” he said evenly. “I’m more bothered that you’re still trying when it’s obvious she’s not interested.”
Jimin smirked, clearly enjoying the push. “She doesn’t seem to mind.”
Jungkook turned to you then, his expression shifting seamlessly into something softer, like the perfect doting boyfriend for anyone watching. His thumb traced a slow, gentle path along your cheek, the touch feather light but heavy with meaning. His voice dropped lower, intimate, sending an unwanted spark straight through your chest.
“Do you let him talk to you like that, baby?”
Your stomach flipped as heat flooded your cheeks, a rush of unwelcome butterflies twisting low in your belly even as irritation simmered beneath it. For a split second, the words stuck in your throat, leaving you flustered and exposed under his dark, knowing gaze.
It’s just pretend.
It’s just pretend.
It’s just pretend.
You exhaled shakily, fingers tightening around the edge of your dress. “You’re right here,” you murmured, barely managing to meet his eyes before your gaze slipped downward, settling stubbornly on his chest. “Why would I let him?”
Jungkook’s thumb lingered against your cheek for a second longer before he finally turned to look back at Jimin.
“You heard her,” he said evenly. “That should be enough.”
Jimin’s mouth twitched faintly with amusement, like none of this had bothered him in the slightest. “Still,” he said lazily, gaze drifting over you again, “I was looking forward to seeing you in that lace Alexander McQueen gown. Such a shame you didn’t wear it.”
Jungkook’s eyes shifted to you at that, the corner of his mouth lifting in a subtle, knowing tilt. His voice dropped low, meant only for the three of you. “Shame,” he murmured, the word brushing against your skin like a secret. “It didn’t stay on very long the last time she tried it on.”
Heat crept up your neck, and you let your heel brush against his foot—a small, almost imperceptible rebellion as the memory hit hard of Jungkook’s hands rough and impatient, the expensive fabric ripping under his grip in a heated blur of frustration and raw want.
Jimin’s chuckle was soft, “I see. She’s made a… different choice tonight,” he murmured, eyes flicking over the deep red gown clinging perfectly to your curves. He paused, giving both of you one last lingering glance, a teasing tilt to his smile, before stepping back. “Well, I’ll let you enjoy the party. Don’t let me distract you too much.”
With that, Jimin melted into the crowd, leaving the two of you alone again, though the tension between you didn’t dissipate, not even a little.
You let out a shaky breath of relief, your cheeks still burning bright red. Instinctively, you tried to tug Jungkook toward the drinks, needing something, anything, to cool the heat crawling through you.
“Jungkook?” you asked, a faint edge of impatience in your tone as he didn’t budge, standing like a rock, immovable.
His dark gaze pinned you in place. “Who was that?” he pressed, eyes narrowing slightly. You raised an eyebrow, trying to keep your composure. “Didn’t you hear? He’s yoona’s stepbrother. So… my mom’s stepson. We’re not related, obviously.”
Jungkook’s sharp gaze didn’t soften. “No, not that. How does he know about the dress?”
You froze for a second, realizing the question had deeper layers. Then you remembered, trying to keep your tone casual, teasing even. “Oh… I met him before. Back at the fitting lounge, remember? he asked me to try it on because he saw me… eyeing it.”
Your eyes flicked to his jaw, slightly twitching at the corners, and you couldn’t help the little chuckle that escaped. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous, kook,” you teased, batting your eyelashes at him.
His voice dropped even lower, quiet enough that only you could hear. “Why wouldn’t I be?” he paused, leaning slightly closer to whisper in your ear. “My girlfriend has strangers talking about wanting to see her undressed.”
You gasped, the words landing like a spark against dry tinder. Tilting your head just enough to meet his gaze, you forced a teasing lilt into your voice, playing along even as the blush gave you away. “I bet your girlfriend is very pretty… if she has strangers fighting over who gets to see her in that dress.”
Jungkook hummed, low and thoughtful, the sound vibrating against your skin. He pulled back just far enough to look at you properly, dark eyes steady,
“She is,” he said quietly, almost reverently. “She’s really pretty.”
The words hit harder than they had any right to, even though you knew it was all pretend. every word, every touch.
He was only doing this to sell the fake relationship, to make the jealous boyfriend act convincing.. right?
Couples got jealous all the time... that was normal.
So why did the quiet sincerity in his voice make the air feel suddenly too thin, and why... just why did your pulse race like it believed him? even while your mind screamed that none of this was real. None of it. It was all pretend, pretend, pretend—with a capital P.
Before you could spiral further in your thoughts, the lights in the hall dimmed smoothly, bathing everything in soft golden warmth. Around you, couples drifted closer, swaying to the slow music that had begun playing. Some laughed quietly, others simply held each other. You didn’t want to look stiff or out of place with so many eyes still occasionally glancing your way.
So you stepped in without overthinking it and slid your arms around Jungkook’s neck, fingers linking lightly at his nape. “Play along,” you murmured.
His hands settled on your waist instantly, warm and sure, pulling you flush against him as you began to sway slowly with the music. “Don’t get used to this, Jungkook,” you whispered, trying to keep your voice steady. “It’s just for tonight.”
A small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, though the rest of his expression stayed carefully unreadable in the low light. “Why? I thought you agreed on serious.”
You narrowed your eyes at him, the dim glow making the space between you feel strangely intimate like the rest of the hall had faded and it was only the two of you.
“You asked me what serious meant to me,” you said quietly, “and I told you: it means sticking close, but not closer than necessary, making it look natural. That’s all I meant. Don’t twist it.”
His thumb traced a slow, absent circle against your waist, right over the spot where a tiny, barely visible mole sat just above your hip bone. The touch was so delicate it could have passed for casual affection to anyone watching, but you knew better. “But what if serious means something completely different to me?” he says after a beat.
Your heart gave a traitorous flutter. The low lights, the warmth of his hands through the thin fabric of your red gown, it all tightened the air around you.
You searched his face, pulse quickening. “What does it mean to you, then?”
Jungkook didn’t answer right away. He simply held your gaze as you turned slowly under the golden light, his voice dropping into that velvet rough whisper meant only for you.
“It means I’ve had enough time to learn every inch of you,” he murmured, fingers pressing lightly into your waist.
“The way you tense under my mouth in certain places… the way your breath catches when I don’t rush. Serious, to me, means remembering all those little details… even when we’re supposed to be pretending we don’t.”
You felt the conversation tipping into territory that felt far too intimate, too dangerous for the game you were playing. Defensive heat prickled up your neck. You needed to shut it down before it went any further.
“Well, it’s a good thing you don’t actually remember those little details about me,” you said, trying to keep your tone light and dismissive, even as your fingers tightened slightly at the back of his neck. “Do you really think you know me that well?”
Jungkook’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. Without breaking the slow sway of your bodies, he let his thumb glide feather light across that same hidden spot above your hip.
“I know you better than you think.” He tilted his head, voice low against your ear as he whispered, so quietly only you could hear.
“You have a mole here,” His thumb pressed ever so lightly over your ribs, sending a spark straight through you. “The one under the curve of your right breast that makes you shiver every time I kiss it slow.”
Jungkook’s thumb didn’t leave that spot above your hip bone now. He traced it again, slower this time, as if he were rewriting the memory into your skin. “There’s another one,” he murmured, voice so low and rough it vibrated through your chest, “Right here on your hip. Small, perfect little mark. I’ve kissed it too many times to count. Every single time you thought I was just being impatient… I was memorizing the way it feels under my lips.”
Your breath hitched. You tried to pull back just a fraction, but his hand at your waist held you steady, gentle but unyielding.
The red fabric of your gown suddenly felt too thin, as if he could see straight through it to every secret you’d tried to keep hidden.
“You’re lying,” you whispered, but the words came out weak, lacking conviction. Because he wasn’t. You could feel the truth in the way his fingers knew exactly where to press, firm enough to remind you he’d been there before. Many times.
There was no smirk this time. His gaze only darkened, honest and unrelenting. Just raw intensity as he leaned in even closer, “I don’t lie to you. Not about this.” His free hand slid up your back, fingers splaying possessively between your shoulder blades, pulling you flush against him so there was no space left for pretense. “I’ve spent hours with my mouth on you, mapping every curve, every freckle, every mole. The one under your right breast… the one on your hip that makes your thigh twitch when I drag my tongue over it slow. I know how your body reacts when I take my time. When I’m not rushing. When I’m worshipping.”
Your heart slammed against your ribs. The music, the lights, the other couples spinning around you, it all faded. All you could focus on was the weight of his words, the way they cracked open something inside you.
Casual. That’s what you’d called it. No strings, bodies satisfying bodies and nothing more.
But casual didn’t do what he was describing. Casual partners didn’t linger and learn the hidden places that made you gasp and arch and fall apart in ways you hadn’t even known were possible.
It terrified you to think Jungkook had done all of it, he had traced you like you were something sacred. Kissed that tiny mole on your hip until your fingers twisted in his hair and your legs trembled. Explored you with such patient devotion that you’d come undone from just that alone, whispering his name like a prayer while he hummed in satisfaction against your skin.
While you’d been convincing yourself it was casual, temporary… he had been memorizing you. Cherishing the parts of your body even you barely paid attention to. Kissing them like they were precious... like you were precious.
Why? If it was only physical, why had he looked at you like that? Why had he committed those small, insignificant details to memory as if they mattered more than anything else?
You swallowed hard, fingers tightening at the nape of his neck until you felt the soft strands of his hair between them. “Jungkook… if it was just sex, why would you—”
“It was never just sex to me,” he cut in, voice low and fierce, eyes locking onto yours with an honesty that stole the rest of your protest. His hand on your waist shifted, thumb pressing once more over your hip like a brand, a silent claim.
You searched his face, throat tight. “What are we doing, Jungkook? What is this?”
For a moment, he didn’t answer at all, just looked at you like he was measuring how much to give and how much to keep locked away.
“You tell me,” he said quietly at last. His thumb pressed once more into the spot above your hip, like punctuation. Like a reminder.
“You’re the one who keeps calling it casual.”
The word hit you like every late night, every tangle of sheets, every body seeking mindless relief. Your throat tightened as you stepped back suddenly, breaking the slow sway of the music before your thoughts could betray you.
“I need some air,” you murmured, voice thinner than you intended.
You didn’t wait for permission, just turned and walked, too fast to look natural, weaving through couples swaying beneath dimmed lights and soft music that suddenly felt suffocating.
Your pulse pounded loud in your ears, drowning everything else out. The cool night air outside the balcony hit your skin like a slap, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside you. Instead of gripping the railing, you turned and pressed your back against the rough stone wall of the balcony, half-hidden in shadow. Your chest rose and fell too fast. You told yourself it was to catch your breath. Deep down, you knew better. You were waiting.
Don’t come after me, you thought.
Please come after me.
One breath, two, three... and the door clicked open behind you.
Your heart slammed against your ribs. You didn’t turn around, but every nerve in your body lit up the second you felt him step onto the balcony. That quiet, steady presence wrapped around you like smoke.
“Running away now?” Jungkook murmured low, though his voice was softer than before. rougher.
“I wasn’t running,” you whispered, eyes fixed on the dark city lights below. “Just needed air.”
A pause. Then the slow sound of his footsteps closing the distance. Warm hands found your waist from behind. He turned you gently but firmly until your back was fully against the wall and you were facing him. The golden light spilling from inside barely reached here, but it was enough to catch the dark intensity in his eyes.
You should have pushed him away. Instead, you stayed perfectly still as he leaned in.
His lips didn’t go for your mouth. They found your neck this time.
The first brush of his mouth against your skin was barely there, warm and feather light, like he was afraid you might shatter. Your head tipped back against the stone without permission, a shaky breath escaping you. God. He was already pulling you under.
He kissed like he had all the time in the world. like your pulse fluttering under his lips was something precious he wanted to memorize. Another slow press, just beneath your ear, then lower, dragging warmth across your skin in a way that made your knees weak.
Your fingers curled into the front of his suit before you could stop yourself.
This doesn’t feel casual.
The thought hit harder with every kiss.
Casual didn’t kiss like this... Patient and adoring.
He lingered on every inch, mouth moving with such careful reverence that your mind started to fog. Cloud nine didn’t even begin to cover it. You were floating, burning, terrified all at once.
Jungkook’s hand slid up your side, fingers tracing the line of your red gown. With aching gentleness, he tugged the fabric down just enough at the neckline, exposing the soft curve of your right breast. Cool air kissed your skin for only a second before his mouth replaced it.
He found the tiny mole underneath immediately, his lips pressing there with so much quiet adoration it stole the air from your lungs. Slow, open mouthed kisses that mapped the small mark like it was the most important thing in the world. Like he’d been dreaming about returning to it.
Your breathing turned ragged, chest heaving as heat flooded every inch of you. Emotions crashed through you, confusion, longing, something dangerously close to tenderness that made your eyes sting. He was kissing you like he knew every hidden part of you and loved them anyway.
God, he kissed you too much. That was the problem.
His tongue traced the mole with heartbreaking softness, then he sucked lightly, reverent and slow, until a soft whimper slipped from your throat. Your hand slid into his hair, fingers tightening as your back arched off the wall, pressing closer despite every warning screaming in your head.
“Stop,” you whispered. It came out as a broken whisper, half protest, half plea. He didn’t. Another slow kiss, softer this time lower along your neck, like he hadn’t heard you at all.
Your pulse spiraled. “Jungkook…” Your voice came thinner now, breath catching. “Stop kissing me.”
His lips hovered just above your skin. Your chest tightened painfully. Then, quieter, defensive, trembling, “Stop kissing me, Jungkook.”
Your fingers curled tighter into his suit. “I hate it.”
The lie tasted sharp on your tongue. Because your body betrayed you instantly by leaning into him even as your words tried to push him away.
Why does he touch me like this?
Why does he remember?
When he finally lifted his head, his eyes were darker, heavier with everything he wasn’t hiding anymore. He looked at you like you were the only thing that existed. Then he leaned in, kissing your mouth, so unbearably sweet it terrified you.
It wasn’t the hot, desperate clash of casual sex. This was deep, full of quiet intention. His lips moved against yours like a confession, like he was pouring every unsaid feeling into you. Soft presses turned deeper, but never rushed. tongue brushing yours with such tender care that your chest ached. It felt like a lover’s kiss. Like someone who had already decided you were his and was showing you exactly how much.
Your fingers trembled against his jaw as you kissed him back despite yourself, the sweetness of it cracking something open inside you. This wasn’t just heat. this was intimacy.
Casual wasn’t supposed to feel like being known... and being cared for.
Your stomach twisted sharply, head spinning, because if you kept letting this happen...if you kept letting him kiss you like that, touch you like that, learn you like that...
You were going to start wanting things you had no right to want.
Things he had never promised. Things he might never give.
And that thought scared you enough to act. Your hand slid from his chest, pushing gently this time, creating real, intentional distance.
Your voice came out quieter than you expected, unsteady. “Jungkook…”
Swallowing hard, you forced the words out before you could change your mind. “We should stop this.”
A beat of silence followed as your chest rose and fell unevenly.
His brows pulled together slightly, not confused, but watchful. “Stop what?” he asked, voice low.
You forced yourself to hold his gaze. forced yourself not to look at his mouth and remember how soft it had felt against your skin just seconds ago.
Your throat tightened. “This,” you said quietly. “Us.”
You waited, then, more fragile and more honest than you wanted to sound—
“We should stop sleeping together.”
Jungkook didn’t move. Didn’t even breathe for a second too long.
The night air shifted around you, heavy and charged like something invisible had just snapped between you.
His hand was still resting at your waist, warm, but no longer pulling you close. Like he hadn’t decided yet whether to let go.
Silence stretched, dangerous, before he broke it, quietly.
“Because you hate it?” The words were calm. “Or because you don’t?”
Your fingers curled against your palms, nails pressing into skin as you forced yourself not to look at his mouth.
“That’s not the point,” you said, voice thinner than you wanted, pushing gently against his chest to create real distance this time. Your hand was even more intentional now.
His jaw shifted slightly, controlled but tense. “Then what is?”
You forced yourself to hold his gaze. “It’s getting messy,” you said quietly. honest in the worst way. “We agreed on casual. no strings... no expectations.”
Your eyes met his again, and it hurt. He was watching you like he was trying to understand something important. “And now?” he asked, two words, low and careful.
You swallowed hard. “Now it doesn’t feel casual anymore.” you admitted quietly.
Silence stretched, heavy and charged. Jungkook’s hand slipped from your waist. The loss of his warmth hit instantly.
He stepped back once, slow and measured, giving you space you suddenly didn’t want but desperately needed.
The distance between you settled like something real, something that hadn’t existed before tonight.
And for the first time since you’d met him, Jungkook didn’t try to reach for you again.
