I grew up listening to comedy, as an only child of a single mom. I had a library card, so I would go and check out comedy records. It was what was available: Bob Newhart, and Nichols and May. Then I would get George Carlin and Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx â if you could find that stuff â because if it had bad words in it, you were in good shape. I had no desire to be a standup or a writer. It was a great way, in a pre-Internet, pre-video game, pre-everything era, to get entertainment that made you feel better.

Midway through The Officeâs run, the âScranton Welcomes Youâ sign made iconic by the showâs opening credits was moved to the local mall because too many people kept stopping traffic to take their pictures with it.
10 years after the series premiere, the sign is still thereâand the relationship between Scranton and The Office is still something of a TV anomaly. The sort of affinity that the city and the show share is uncommon even among series that film on location, which The Office did not. Los Angeles might not have matched the landscape of northeastern Pennsylvania, but Scranton was always more of a character than an environmentâand like The Officeâs other background players, it took on a life of its own as the show went on.

The Sarah Silverman Programâs tribute to the late Harris Wittels is heartbreaking
Harris Wittels fans know the late comedian got his start in Hollywood as a writer for The Sarah Silverman Program and that Silverman, in particular, took Wittelsâ recent death fairly hard. Thatâs why itâs so sweet that Silverman, Rob Schrab, and the rest of cast and crew of the show put together a tribute to Wittelsâ work on the show. Itâs bittersweet, to say the leastâespecially with Silverman singing a sad Bright Eyes song over the closing montageâbut also a funny look back at just how Wittelsâ singular voice shaped so much of the show.
