iâve been doing my homework on how to break into a writing career and honestly. thereâs a Lot that i didnât know about thats critical to a writing career in this day and age, and on the one hand, its understandable because weâre experiencing a massive cultural shift, but on the other hand, writers who do not have formal training in school or donât have the connections to learn more via social osmosis end up extremely out of loop and working at a disadvantage.Â
like, i didnt know about twitter pitch parties!! i didnt know about literary agents and publishers tweeting their manuscript wishlist, in hopes that some poor soul out there has written the book they really want to read and publish!! this isnt some shit you learn about in school! you really need to know the ins and outs of the writing community to be successful!Â
for anyone interested, hereâs what iâve learned so far in my quest for more writing knowledge:
1. Writerâs Market 2019 is a great place to startâ it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version Â
2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about likeâŠgritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because theyâre the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.
3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. youâre also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read
4. unfortunately, youâre gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books theyâd like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)
5. connect with other writers, literary agents, publishers at book events. you will absolutely need the connections if you want to get ahead as a writer. thats just kind of the state of the world.
Important info is important -.-
UPDATE: so i just got signed by an agent bc of twitter pitch parties. for any aspiring writers, you dont HAVE to go the twitter pitch party route, its just another way to get noticed a bit fasterÂ
Rebloging for my own benefit, but anyone else who wants to be a writer needs to know this too.
My hypothesis is that in like 10 years gen z is gonna have a big cult boom the way the boomers did in the 70s
Itâs already happening on tik tok. Thereâs a fun new thing going round thatâs citing common symptoms of depression and anxiety as signs youâre about to have your awakening and that you are actually an alien and the reason you donât feel right is because youâre home sick for your own galaxy. So thatâs fun.
agreed, and i don't mean this in a "haha gen z is so dumb they're gonna join a tiktok cult lmao" i mean that conditions are perfect for the formation of cults right now.
high unemployment and a lot of underpaying, pointless jobs = people are looking for things to do with their life, a purpose
skyrocketing cost of living = most young people will not be able to live on their own, meaning some will end up in a group living situation with people interested in recruiting them
it's a time of great cultural and political upheaval, nothing feels real, people are desperate for meaning and human connection. cults promise that
there is a new wave of acceptance and understanding for ways of life outside the norm, which is great! ...except for when cult leaders tell you abusive and controlling practices are just their culture, their religion, their lifestyle, their beliefs, their tradition, and if you disrespect it you are the problem
social media influencers have already shown us how easy it is to build a cult of personality and attract people from anywhere in the world who are interested in the exact brand you are selling
spirtuality is having a boom, as are things like astrology, crystals, tarot, meditation, energy... those things aren't bad on their own but they are often used as tools of cult spaces
wellness. i think a lot of people are already in wellness cults. you can make people do a lot of things in the name of "wellness" and a big factor of maintaining a cult is keeping members in a state of decreased cognition..... like say, with regular fasting
i think people are just unaware in general of how cults function, especially because the satanic panic was a big stupid false alarm that convinced the youths that dungeons and dragons or doom were gateways to cults, which are scary evil child murdering, satan-worshipping gangs. people don't know how to spot them in real life.
So if that's the case everyone remember with me the cardinal rules of not getting cult'd
SOCIAL BUFFER: Learn what healthy social boundaries are and develop relationships which are within those boundaries.
Be wary of those who step on your or others' boundaries. Be there for your friends, but don't be their therapists or parents. Go get coffee or juice or snacks & chat casually with a friendly crew on a regular basis.
ESTEEM BUFFER. Recognize that you and every other person on this planet are owed a baseline of respect.
Respect means that what you wear, what/who you take interest in, and who/what you are are things which you decide on based on your own reasoning. If anyone is trying to change your mind, make sure to think critically about their side and decide for yourself whether you want to change. Ask: Why do they want you to change? Is that valid to your situation? Who / what would benefit from this change? Do you want them / it to benefit? Then decide for yourself.
RELAXATION BUFFER. Take time exclusively for yourself.
Take care of your body and mind when it needs to be fed, watered, washed, or nurtured. Have a couple hobbies that are just for you. Have more than one interest. Think about more than just one topic. Cults keep you focused on them to the exclusion of all else, so don't allow yourself to be blocked in.
BUBBLE POP BUFFER: Learn from multiple sources, even ones you don't like or respect.
Read multiple sources' versions of events before you decide what you feel about something. Recognize that not all sources are valid, but understand what those invalid sources are trying to do. Are they misguided or malicious? Who are THEIR sources? What is the agenda? Who benefits? Why would they want to say what they're saying? Do they have a point? Who pays them? What do they care about? Then make your decision.
BEWARE THE B.I.T.E.: Cults control people via Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotion control. BITE
Look up the BITE model and consider it against groups you wish to join / have joined.
Remember. You are the arbiter of your mind.
You have the blessing and burden of making your own decisions. Other people who will love and care about you throughout your life will want you to think for yourself and will think for themselves.
You are not alone. You are worthwhile. Your thoughts are your own and you have every right to control them yourself.
Just a quick addition: look for BITE stuff in regular individuals and friend groups, not just groups youâre formally joining. Look for it in roommates. Look for it in anyone you start getting close to. Look for it in groups that people you care about are getting into, and people theyâre getting close to.
Sometimes people are just flawed, sometimes theyâre well-intentioned but still growing, but thatâs the point of red flags: they arenât a sure sign of trouble, but theyâre still worth taking note of & keep an eye on in case patterns emerge.
The reason I say this is worth learning and looking out for in more casual relationships is that these are mostly just abuse tactics carried out in a large-scale, more organized way. And because if someone is interested in recruiting you, they may employ these tactics on an individual, casual-seeming level as well.
(Information on BITE methods)
As someone whoâs really interested in cults and cult tactics, I really recommend âThe Vowâ, too! NXIVM is a cult that essentially set itself up as a self-improvement business tool for white collar folks, and it used âwellnessâ culture as a major recruitment tool. There was nothing remotely religious or spiritual about it, which is part of why so many people fell into it. âSeducedâ is good as well, and shorter.
I no longer know If I wish I to drown my self in love, vodka or the sea.
Franz Kafka (via perfectquote)
reading vincent van goghs letters and he keeps repeating the same thing.. that i may be of use in the world. he repeats it over and over, in questions, in musings, in desperation. how can i be of use in the world? (the most precious question!) how can i be of use in the world? (how can anyone?) reminds me of that mary oliver quote: to pay attention, this is our endless and proper work. if i were any more insightful i could say something profound here, but i think if we keep focused attention on the question, we may find a way to be of some good. like rilke meant. by loving the questions themselves, we may one day stumble upon the answer.
while we talked often you asked me if i was drunk. for the way my eyes melted, for the morbid tone my tongue slipped in, for the tenderness. no one knows how badly i wanted to respond that i wasnt drunk. i was in love with you, and the two things were probably the same.
creative writingâs just like yeah sure i can deal with my issues i just need to cover them in several layers of metaphors first
touch depression? with my bare hands? no hang on *invents a character* this will be my gloves
reblog this and put in the tags at least two (2) songs you are listening to on repeat right now
remembered that post about how essay writing is easier to get into if you write a really weird ass intro and yknow starting an essay with OK SIT DOWN SHUT THE FUCK UP AND BUCKLE YOUR MOTHERFUCKING SEATS BECAUSE ITS TIME TO LEARN ABOUT HOW POLITICIANS LIKE TO FUCK US IN THE ASS WITH VIOLATIONS TO OUR HUMAN RIGHTS COVERED UP BY NEAT LITTLE BILLS AND ACTS WHILST RETAINING A FACADE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS BY CONTINUING TO FOSTER A RIGHTS BASED CULTURE IN THE UK does have a nice ring to it
Okay, letâs do it, letâs do the drugs, letâs do the chemical lobotomy, letâs shut down the higher functions of my brain and perhaps Iâll be a bit more fucking capable of living. Letâs do it.
Sarah Kane, 4.48 Psychosis (2000)
âNo one has ever written, painted, sculpted, modeled, built, or invented except literally to get out of hell.â -Antonin Artaud
âIâve only ever written to escape from hellâand itâs never workedâbut at the other end of it when you sit there and watch something and think thatâs the most perfect expression of the hell that I felt then maybe it was worth it.â -Sarah Kane

Rural Boys Watch The Apocalypse (rough draft) by Keaton St. James
this poem is so very special to me...
Jean Little, "Oranges" from Hey World, Here I Am!
[ID: A sketch of a half peeled orange with sections from other oranges lying around above a poem titled Oranges in italics. The poem goes as:
I peel oranges neatly
The sections come apart cleanly, perfectly, in my hands
When Emily peels an orange, she tears holes in it.
Juice squirts in all directions.
"Kate," she says, "I don't know how you do it!"
Emily is my best friend.
I hope she never learns how to peel oranges.

Through the haze and evening light of the living room floated the first hints of a song which held a warbling familiarity, needle-scratched and worn into the fuzzy warmth of unborn nostalgia. From somewhere in the cacophony of noise and movement swelled a chorus, a hundred voices clamoring not to be heard, but to be seen. Maybe it was the music of another generation, a well-loved record recovered from its plastic cover behind the sofa. A song they all knew but never remembered. Or, more likely, it was an anthem of teenage rebellion - the sound of dissent relished only ever in secret. Only ever on nights like these.
In either case, as it played, a heady sort of dream-smoke fell over the room. It tasted of bitter liquor and that same anticipation that flowed through the pulsing veins of the dancing figures that filled the room. Behind heavy eyelids swam its melody as idle bodies swayed to the blurring rhythm. An imperceptible heat flowed between their gliding hips and twirling wrists. Swallowed under the music were the sounds of shy defiance: the clinking of earrings; the squeaking of leather; the sparking of a lighter. And, above it all, lay an absolutely delicious absence of any sort of guilt or remorse.
The room was crowded, all low popcorn ceilings and yellowing wallpaper. Any light that managed to squeeze through the mass of people was dim, choked by the smoke and sweat that seemed almost an extension of the self, a cloud of warm humanity. Hearts, thumping and light, beat erratically in time with the pounding music. In their corduroy and wrinkled button-downs, the crowd of nearly-strangers felt morbidly, grotesquely alive, and every second of it was beautiful.
From some hidden cabinet or another, bottles of cheap vodka and ale were produced for sloshing over into plastic cups. The bottles surfed their way through the crowd until they were spent, leaving some poor sod to explain away the absence to his parents. As the alcohol worked its way beneath the skin, the evening grew louder, and the music increased in volume and ferocity. There was a new, liquid quality to the air, and the yellowing light hung drunk in it. Boys with quicksilver smiles glanced towards each other in victorious liking, and girls with messy hair squeezed hands in the euphoric distraction of dance. They all knew what waited in the early hours, but none were so stupid as to dwell on what the future held, at least for now.
If it was a morning of regret and a life of memories they wanted, it was exactly that they would get.
Im gonna hold an egg in my mouth for 2 hours to challenge myself.
