The constant rolling disaster that is Overwatch's game development aside, what really perplexes me about how Blizzard is handing the broader franchise is their continual insistence that a canon narrative exists in spite of their equally continual refusal to tell anyone what it is.

Like, okay, the events of the games aren't canon. Fair enough: the games are multiplayer-only, and you can't account for player actions.

Oh, and the animated short films aren't canon either – they're properly understood as in-universe propaganda, not depictions of actual events. That's a little high concept for you guys, but fine.

But surely the comics are canon, right? Well, no; some of the comics (we're not telling you which ones) were canon at one point, but the writing team has decided to go in a different direction.

My dudes, what is left? The weird Source Filmmaker porn? Is that canon? Well, apparently it's at least as canon as anything else!

Hi there, I was wondering if you saw any picture of Doomfist and Reyes in the Declassified book? Also, does it mention anything new about Cassidy's recruitment into Blackwatch re: Reyes/Amari? Thank you in advance!

Yes! When Doomfist is arrested we are given this image of Reyes interrogating Doomfist.

In the book it says that Reyes interrogated him often in order to get something he could use against Talon, but these never resulted in anything of use.

Now, as far as Cassidy, he wasn't so much recruited as he was already there when Blackwatch was formed. When he was arrested, the deal Reyes gave him was to join Overwatch proper, as Blackwatch wasn't a full operation yet. At that time, it was basically just Gabe and Gerade doing some shady shit sometimes, and after Cassidy signed on, he ended up joining them on their shady missions since he was already in Reyes' orbit and I guess Reyes' thought he was trustworthy enough for such missions.

As far as Ana is concerned, it's heavily implied that Ana was involved in training Cassidy from the beginning, which is backed up by the Cassidy-Pharah interaction where Cassidy says Ana taught him how to shoot. And we're given the lovely image that I posted here.

And we know that Ana and Cassidy were close, as it's been said that the only times Cassidy has spoken of his family, he was referring to Ana and Fareeha Amari.

So I've been in this fandom since launch. And nothing caused me more damage than a comment to fanart that went, "I thought Genji and Pharah hated each other." Because you KNOW there was nothing in game to support that. That belief was entirely through Fandumb Osmosis. But I can't help but feel Pharah's new Karaoke voiceline has the same energy as the fan-made stuff that spawned that person's comment. Not as severe as the fistacuffs the fandumb loved depicting but I don't like that the devs even hinted towards that out of the blue. Or am I looking too much into it?

I actually had the opposite reaction to this when I heard that voice line. To me that less hinted at beef between Genji and Pharah and more hinted at them being friends. The way Pharah interacts with people is sometimes misread because of her tone but to me the "not even Genji can seem to block it", read to me as the same way she talks to Cassidy. Just poking fun at them. Like she does with most characters.

To be completely honest, my first reaction to hearing that was less "oh they're making them have beef" and more "oh are they giving them a sibling dynamic too?", because that makes the most sense considering that both of them have said they consider Cassidy their brother. To me that's a natural progression of that dynamic. Also I highly doubt that either Cassidy or Angela would tolerate either of them not liking each other specifically because they have a thing for Angela. To me, Pharah and Genji having beef because of that would be out of character for multiple reasons.

Also Pharah just tends to poke fun at the people she's close with, and when she dislikes someone you can usually tell. She isn't like Cassidy or other high charismatic characters who can hide their dislike. I mean, just look at her interactions with Ramattra, or her revive line for Widow.
