As somebody raised by a low-income single mother myself, please speak for yourself. I value my own life and am so grateful for my own life. A person’s circumstances do not determine whether or not they are human are valuable—a person’s value is intrinsic to them, despite their struggle or poverty. In my case, my father was not a good parent, and my family still wears the wounds of his abuse. Even though he certainly didn’t deserve fatherhood, I have so much appreciation for my own life, with the suffering in it. Some men don’t deserve to be fathers, some women don’t deserve to be mothers, but my life is not about what they deserve. I don’t live at their or your or anybody’s convenience.
I’m sorry you think suffering and poverty make someone worth killing, but you don’t get to decide for somebody else whether or not their life is worth living. I don’t apologize for my family’s background with drugs, mental illness, and abuse. I’m glad my siblings and myself were born. I’m glad I’ve endured. It has granted me wisdom and compassion for others. I have grown a great deal of empathy for people. I have gained an appreciation for the sensations of life for the blessing it is. None of it has come without cost, but I nonetheless value my own life and find it precious to me.
Please don’t act like you are representing the whole body of children of “broken” homes. Ending someone’s life because they might suffer is, frankly, elitist. You may think it’s compassionate. It’s not. You’re placing someone’s human worth—whether or not they should exist—on whether they will enjoy life.
What kind of message is that for the disabled, the mentally ill, the poor? Life sucks, so kill yourself? You can’t seriously believe that’s right.
