Hey, here's something I tell my undergrads because the southern state I teach in has a whole "divisive concepts" law that was written to keep teachers from talking about history in such a way that it might give some sensitive white kid big shame fee-fees.

I said what I said.

Anyway.

I tell them that history has some things in it that are awful and soul-shaking and shitty, but you should never let anyone tell you that the sucky stuff like era-specific racial inequality was "just the way things were" and that "most people thought like that." No. Nope. That's b.s. because there have always been people who did the right thing. There were always people who understood how to act in the face of injustice. So do that. Even when people say you're fighting against the insurmountable, fight anyway; you can be one of the good guys. Choose to be someone who seeks justice....and also, John Brown (my fellow Kansan, thank you) was a badass.

The portrayal of white people who have been violently separated from their own culture stealing the power of black culture and music to try to get reconnected was SO literal and somehow not at ALL heavy-handed or trite. Fkn remarkable.
