A/N: Day 22 and I'm just finishing up #4. This one kind of got away from me and it started merging with my obsession with orchids. welp!
Kurt quietly moved forward in the dark closet, trying not to make any noise and disturb Blaine who was humming along to the radio across the apartment, in the kitchen, while baking Kurt his bi-annual cookies.
âShit!â Kurt cried out in a whispered tone, after slipping on a scarf that had been loose on the floor. He was definitely getting close to where Blaine had hidden his anniversary present, he never left clothing on the floor, unless they were torn off in the heat of the moment. Â Kurt just hoped Blaine hadnât heard him cry out, and that he wouldnât come to see if he was okay.
Kurt didnât usually snoop, he gave Blaine his own space, but honestly the curiosity was killing him. He slid behind a rack of winter clothing that he had put away a month ago, and was stopped by something odd. Kurt looked down to find a large bag of miracle grow nestled in between one of his hat stands and a shoe rack.
It wasnât opened yet and hadnât gotten any dirt on his clothing but it certainly didnât belong there. Kurt wondered what had prompted Blaine to buy it, as they didnât have any yard space in their third-floor apartment, and then why Blaine had wanted to hide it from him.
Kurt figured the best way to answer his questions was just to ask his husband. So he picked up the bag of dirt, and made his way out from behind the racks of clothing. Blaine didnât hear him at first when he entered the kitchen, he was singing along, at an incredibly high decibel, to an old Beatles song as he put the baking tray into the oven. Kurt paused for a moment to check out his husbandâs ass, before stepping forward and dropping the bag loudly, to get Blaineâs attention.
âAHH!â Blaine shrieked, and jumped. Blaine turned around to see Kurt with one hip cocked out, and an eyebrow raised with teasing smirk.
âKurt, you scared me!â Blaine exclaimed, pressing a hand to his chest to calm him rapidly pounding heart. Blaineâs gaze slowly moved down to the source of the loud noise that startled him. âOh, umâŚKurt-I can explain!â Blaine stumbled out.
âItâs okay, I was just wondering what this was doing in my spare closet. Care to explain?â
âWell, you know our anniversary is coming up...â Blaine paused.
âAnd you decided you get me some dirt?â Kurt teased.
âNo! well itâs only sort of your present,â Blaine explained. âI got you an orchid, because when we had them at the wedding, you said they were your favorite because your mom used to keep them around the house-â Blaine rushed out before being cut off by Kurt. âOh, Blaine, thank you. Thatâs so sweet.â Kurt said giving his husband a soft smile.
âI know! But now itâs dying and I donât know what to do so I bought it some dirt to cheer it up, I guess.â Blaine said with a shrug.
âCan I see it?â Kurt asked shyly.
âSure, itâs probably better  give you your present before it dies.â Blaine said sadly.
âYouâre such a drama queen,â Kurt replied, âI think I might be able to fix it.â
Blaine walked to the bedroom and came back with a small potted orchid, it was pale yellow with a pink center. âWhere were you hiding it?â Kurt asked.
âBehind the bookcase.â Blaine admitted sheepishly.
âWell thatâs the first thing, they need light.â Kurt said.
As Blaine walked closer Kurt took a better look at the plant. âThe medium is all wrong for this, it needs a mixture of wood chips, charcoal, and bark. Weâll need to find the big bag of dirt some other use, because first thing tomorrow Iâm going to get it the right stuff to sit in.â
Kurt moved gracefully around the kitchen. If Blaine hadnât felt so bad about his horrible present he would have noted how similar Kurt looked to his father when he was puttering around his shop.
âSorry my present for you needs so much work.â Blaine apologized. âNonsense, some things just need a little love so they can grow into something beautiful.â
Kurt replied giving his husband a kiss on the nose before continuing on the proper methods of orchid care.
