what some people think âyou donât need dysphoria to be transâ means: anyone can choose to be trans and trans people can just choose to be cis.
what âyou donât need dysphoria to be transâ actually means: trans experiences are extremely varied and trans people define dysphoria in multiple valid ways. there are multiple valid ways to be trans other than the âtrue transsexualâ narrative popularized by cis people. distress about your birth assigned gender or sex characteristics is one way to be trans. discovering that you suddenly feel more authentic when living as a new gender, after no discernable distress that youâd call dysphoria, is another. if your gender is different from the one you were assigned at birth, you can call yourself trans.
4 months post op
Wow I'm awful at updating...
There haven't been to many changes, though. I'm 100 times happier, which I guess is the best change. I can't describe how happy I am to get up in the morning and just pull on a fresh shirt, or to sleep over st friends without worrying about binding.
The skin issue I had froknthe adhesive and bacitracin is fully cleared up, so maybe I'll post some pics soon.
Scars have stretched some because I'm not to good at taking it easy, but I'm not unhappy with it. I'm going to use silicone strips to try and help out with that.
Occasionally I get sharp pains, but I don't think it's surgery related...hopefully not.
If anyone has questions about my experience feel free to message me. Or to just talk.
1 Month Post Op
Hello again. It's been a month and about a week since my top surgery, so I thought an update was in order. - The nipples are looking pretty good. All the scabs have fallen away. Some areas are darker then others so I hope that clears up, but it's not terrible if it doesn't. - The steri strips are all gone now and the incisions look great too. They're a little stretched where the drains went in, but I plan to get some silicone strips soon to start trying to fade the scars. - Sensation wise I feel like the numbness is slowly going away. I don't expect full sensation for a while but I'm comfortable where I am now. I can feel fabric in some spots. - There is still some swelling. I should probably wear the ace bandage more but I honestly doubt I will at this point. I've been without it about two weeks now. - Mood wise I'm feeling amazing. I can't describe how great it feels to just get up and throw a tshirt on and go out the door. I don't have to wrestle with a binder or shift it around all the time to be comfy, and it's one less layer during the heat. I can lay down too without having to worry about it. It's awesome. - That issue I had with the bacitracin is mostly cleared up. I was put on antibiotics and was allergic to both of them, so now I've got a rash on my neck that I'm dealing with. Honestly I'll probably just try to find time to go to the dermatologist soon because it's so irritating. I'll try and post pictures soon when I'm not on mobile.

IM LAUGHING
3 Weeks Post Op
I feel like I haven't updated in a while, but there aren't to many day-to-day changes anymore to write about.
- I've moved back into college (finally) and I'm making my way around fine. I get a little more tired after all the walking but that might be from not doing much over the summer. I also probably use my arms here more then I'm supposed to but it's unavoidable with some things, but I do make an effort not to stretch or reach to far
- I'm still wearing the ace wrap both because I'm so used to it and because since I move a lot and am very busy I feel like it probably helps keep swelling in check. Also provides protection when I see friends and they go in for a hug, cause some people hug /hard/. I didn't mention the surgery to many people here on campus. No particular reason why I didn't, but it wasn't something to really publicize either.
- (off topic briefly) also since it's been a few months and my voice has dropped considerably I've gotten lots of comments on how deep my voice is now. The reactions are prettt funny sometimes. It feels good, but also strange? I'll make a separate post about it later
- the nips are looking good. Right one looks basically fully healed which is awesome. All the tape is off that side too. Left still had a scalp around the raised part but that's starting to fall off now. I'm worried it will catch and pull off before some of its ready though. đ¤ it doesn't.
- incision lines are pretty thin which is great. Again in trying not to stretch but it's tough. Some of my stitches are starting to poke out as they dissolve so I have to trim a few places. Most of the tape is off.
- the issue I had with the bacitracin/bandages is getting slowly better. I'm on antibiotics to help even though I think I'm having a small reaction to the antibiotic itself. My arms and legs are so itchy and I can't take benedryl cause it knocks me out. I got a new antibiotic but I'm still itchy, and now nauseaous if I take it in an empty stomach (which I'm intrigued to do) so I take it two hours after eating which isn't terrible. Hopefully it clears up fast
Overall it's really nice to be back on campus. I don't have to hear my mom asking about the healing a few times a day or pester me about wearing the wrap. I'll maybe make a post about parents later. Let me know if anyone would be interested. I migh update with pictures soon. We'll see.
2 Weeks Post Op
Hello. So updates: Steri-strips are starting to come off, and the scar underneath looks pleasantly thin. Looks well healed too but I'll be putting some oil or scar tape on it later once I check with my surgeon at the 6 week appointment. Nips are looking good too. I have since stopped using the non stick pads and bacitracin per my nurses suggestion. The skin around the nipples that was very red and irritated is still very red and irritated, so I plan to call in again tomorrow and let them know. It stings to wear light shirts which sucks, and I really hope it goes away fast. I am eager to wear shirts comfortably. I am enjoying how flat I look though. Arm movement is improving. I'm probably using my arms more then I should be, but that's hard for me to help. I do make an effort though not to stretch much if it can be helped. I wear an ace bandage out of the house now mainly for protection. I put a soft cloth between it and the nips to help keep them from being irritated. There is definitely still some swelling, and I'd like to use the wrap more, but it just drives me crazy. It's so uncomfortable and itchy and it hurts my irritated skin to much to wear right now. Hopefully everything gets better by when I start school. I'm going to be very busy, but I'll still try to make myself take it easy. I've already dropped an acting class because of that reason (plus I didn't really want it anyways. I'll have to take it eventually though for my major). Overall feeling good I guess, aside from the skin issue. Can't wait to be able to fully enjoy this chest.
I think I have some allergy to (what I suspect) is polyester on the non-stick pads. It's making my skin have red bumps wherever the bandage touches, and all around my nipples is red and warm and bumpy. It also itches like hell, but around the nips now it just stings. I'm scared of losing them. Just kinda freaking out... I'm calling the office tomorrow and sending pics if they need it but I really don't want this to get worse. I'm supposed to still be dressing them but it's so bad I don't think I can tonight. Surrounded by pillows with fingers crossed I don't roll over or bump them in my sleep...it's terrifying. I'm not supposed to sleep on my stomach cause I could damage them but what if my arm hits one while I'm sleeping?? It's a scary time.
Trans* Guide to (Socially) Navigating the Gym
This is a newcomerâs guide to the gym from a social perspective, focused on the trans* experience. This is not a workout program.
This guide draws upon my own FTM experiences, feel free to add your own experiences.
Disclaimer: I live in a diverse city and go to a left-leaning university. My circumstances could be drastically different from yours. Use your best judgement.
The Locker Room
Bring a friend (who youâre out to) along, they can affirm or stand up for your identity if anyone questions your presence.
Rarely is anyone looking at you while changing, especially in male locker rooms. Find a nice little corner and face the walls, or go to a stall to change. Youâd be surprised at how many cis people do the same. Iâve changed tshirts in the locker room while wearing a binder tank after 4 months on T without any problems.
You can also try changing in a bathroom that has less traffic first, then walk to the gym. If the weather is cold, wear a hoodie or sweats on top, then take it off at the gym.
Avoid going at peak hours if you are uncomfortable, it is more likely that youâll have to change in close proximity with others.
Avoid changing next to old people. They are very comfortable nude and will strike up conversations randomly.
I have never showered at the gym, but bring a towel to dry off my sweat, and deodorant to keep the scents fresh.
I find boxers to be easier than boxer briefs. If Iâm wearing briefs, I either pack, or find a really good corner without people. Packing is personally uncomfortable after a especially hard session, due to shifting and sweating. Boxers sort of hide everything, and I feel comfortable standing in them for a bit to cool off.
The Gym (mostly the weight room)
You are NOT the only person who doesnât know how every equipment works. You can:
Ask a staff for help
Watch YouTube before your workout. I sometimes pull up exercise videos during my workout to check how a machine works because Iâm too introverted.
If you donât like to talk to other people and want to avoid chit-chats:
Stare at the equipment as if youâre formulating your workout plan
Bring headphones.
If someone is at an equipment you want to use, you can ask them âhow many sets do you have leftâ, which means how many more repeats of the exercise they will be doing. A common etiquette is to let you use the machine right after, if youâre hanging around. Be courteous and give the other person room to finish their workout.
Donât walk between mirrors and the people training in front of it.
Itâs ok to not like looking in your image in the mirror if it triggers dysphoria, but still try to make sure you are performing the exercises correctly by bringing a friend along to form check.
Remember:
You are not weak. Everyone starts somewhere. The huge guy in the corner? He was once a lanky teenager. It takes immense dedication and discipline to reach the level you see in the media.
Iâm definitely still this person who doesnât know how to do anything in a gym. Hah.

Nip Thoughts
Trying to determine if the bandages, tape, or bacitracin I'm using for dressing my nips and drain incisions is what's irritating my skin (red, itchy, small bumps) or if it really is the binder I ranted about a few days ago. I suspect the bacitracin, but we'll see. I've got eczema, apparently, but I haven't had any glare ups in at least a year or two. When I did get it though it was on my nips, pretty bad, but that got fixed nearly five years ago now so I doubt it's that resurfacing. God I hope not, not while they're still healing. Right one still looks the best. As of my reveal the left was black in some areas, still bleeding some and overall looked kinda gross. It's still black on the actual part that sticks out and is still bleeding some, but overall it's starting to look better which is good. Especially since it's only been a few days. And minor bleeding like a scratch let's me know that it does have a blood supply which is reassuring. I also don't know if the nips hurt because they're a) healing (I know, duh) because my doctor said I'd experience pain or b) because of irritation from the bandages or bacitracin im using. Hopefully it's a. We'll see.
Im a ftm trans teen, do you know if there's an easy way to know your clothing sizes in the men's section? i've tried searching but most sites are very confusing
Lee says:
Most sites have a sizing chart, and you just get a measuring tape and take your measurements! You could also go to the store in question and just try on the clothes.Â

5 months on T
I've had to skip a few shots cause of top surgery, but I'm still 5 months today. Not to many more changes from last month. - Facial hair though seems to grow back a little quicker. There's not a huge amount but a few darker hairs on my chin and mustache area are popping up more frequently. - still sweating more then I used to. That might be from the post op binder though, but overall body odor has changed some - I worked out for a few weeks prior to top surgery, and I found it really easy to start bulking up my muscles. Biceps at least. Can't wait till I can get back to that (my stomach is a little doughy and I wanna get rid of it) - more hair on my thighs is coming in - my voice is cracking less then before but still seems deeper. Maybe a little softer too. - some acne is starting up on my left cheeks. I used to get it there this time of the month pre t so I'm hoping it's just that flaring up. I've managed my acne well recently and at the start of T and I don't want to have to much acne if I can avoid it. I can't wait to go back to school in a week. It'll be good to see all my friends from uni, catch up about what happened over the summer and start up my new job on campus.
1 Week Post Op
Had my first shower since surgery, and while it was terrifying for the nips it felt great overall. Little tough to wash under my arms and my hair, but I managed well enough. Took longer then usual though unfortunately. I made a separate post ranting about my surgical binder if anyone wants to read it. It got to long to be put here. In short I hate the thing with a burning anxiety-dysphoria filled passion. I'm gonna drop a class at uni because if involves a lot of movement. I'd have trouble with it while healing so since it's offered every semester I'll just push it off till later. Plus I'm really not fond of taking acting so like no biggie. I get tired sometimes during the day, but I refrain from napping. I can't wait to sleep in my bed again. Nipples are looking better than yesterday already. Might just be my optimism though. The right one definitely looks better then the left but I'm sure they'll catch up to one another eventually. I'm changing dressings twice a day now which isn't terrible. I usually give them a few minutes of air too. I miss going to the gym, but not to much luckily. Once in cleared for exercise I'll go to the one at school and start gentle. Maybe I'll focus on legs for a while and work the chest up slowly. I'm going to get some scar strips and cream to try and help make them fade and stay smooth. My right scar again looks better then the left. They're starting to bruise some, but that's normal. Tomorrow I'm 5 months on T so expect an update on that too.
Binder Rant
I'm gonna go on a rant for a moment about this surgical binder ... I hate this fucking thing. I have to wear it for 4 more weeks approx. and I hate it with a burning passion. Like. I totally get why I need it - decrease swelling and protect stuff. Plus the only positive I've got about it is that the pressure is comforting since I can't feel much else. But that's not enough to make me like it. Yes, it's better without the drains. 1000 times better. But hell, it makes my skin itch. I have dry skin naturally and I get so itchy when I take it off I have to try not to scratch to hard no matter how good it feels. I've started using lotion but hopefully this thing doesn't cause an eczema flare up for me cause that would be hell. And don't get me started on the Velcro. My surgical binder has a long Velcro strip that connects it around me, which does make it easy to put on, but the Velcro is so /stiff/. There are different types of Velcro and this is the stiff one where it doesn't flex or move easily. I'm not fat but I do have some muffin top to my stomach and since this thing stops just above my belly button the hard Velcro either a) scratches/tickles the stomach pudge when I sit or b) the stretchy sides roll up over the love-handles and bend the Velcro outward into a weird bump. Like, I look a month pregnant if I stand a certain way and it's stressing me out I hate it. Overall it's very uncomfortable. Especially under the armpits. I had to wear back braces when I was young cause of scoliosis and this reminds me a lot of that which is very upsetting. I always hated those things and it stresses me out so much. Probably that undiagnosed anxietyâ˘. I nearly didn't leave my house today because it was making me so upset but I did leave because I was feeling pressured to go and not going would've been just as stressful. I don't know any good coping methods to help. I'm gonna be freaking out once I go back to uni in a week and a half if I have to wear this stupid thing in class and backstage while doing my theatre work. I can't even wear a backpack yet because of the nipple grafts so I hope everything works out. I called the surgeons office about it and they said I could not wear it sometimes during the day to let my skin breathe which helps, but I don't want to put it back on once it's off. Same with at night. She said if I had to I could sleep without it and put it on in the morning but I don't want to compromise my healing. My old binders made me dysphoric when they'd occasionally shift or roll up or whatever. I got the half tank style because I hate having something tight around my stomach and they'd occasionally roll up or shift if I moved a certain way. It drew my own attention to my chest and how uncomfortable I was. This is doing that same thing and I fucking hate it. Logically I know there's hardly anything i can do about it and that complaining all the time about how much I hate it won't help but neither will sitting there letting my anxiety pool over or fill up inside me. I might even cancel lunch plans tomorrow because I don't want to go out in this uncomfortable thing. *sigh*. I don't know. I'm so excited to be all healed up from my top surgery. Most people don't have much issues with they're post surgical binders. Not that I've heard at least, so I don't want anyone to read this and worry that they'll hate it to (but if you do/did please message me and we can vent together over them). If this thing was just a few inches shorter and had softer velcro or clips it wouldn't be so bad. I considered cutting it and sewing it some myself to modify it it I don't want to ruin the thing on accident cause I only have two. I'm going to look into getting an ace bandage to try. The nurse said I could try getting one of those instead for compression so we'll see. If I have to I might break down though and buy a sports bra even though it would only be for like a few weeks. We'll see. Ughhhhhhh. Rant over. If you read this far I appreciate it. I just needed to get that off my chest..like this surgical binder.
