How to Introduce and End Flashbacks
Introducing a Flashback
Through Sensory Triggers A sound, smell, or physical sensation can catapult a character into a memory. Example: The faint scent of jasmine wafted through the open window, pulling her back to her grandmotherās garden. She could almost feel the warm sun on her back as they planted flowers together, her grandmotherās laugh ringing in her ears. Sensory cues are especially effective because they feel immediate and relatable.
Using an Object or Photo Physical items are natural prompts for reminiscing. Example: He picked up the crumpled letter, its edges worn with age. As his eyes scanned the familiar handwriting, the years fell away. He was 16 again, reading those very words for the first time.
Dialogue That Sparks a Memory A conversation can easily lead to a flashback when a particular word or phrase resonates. Example: āYou always overthink everything,ā she said, laughing. He froze. Those were the exact words his father had thrown at him that night, before slamming the door and leaving for good.
A Characterās Internal Reflection This works well in introspective or emotional scenes. Example: As she stared at the divorce papers, her mind drifted to the first time theyād met.
A Sudden Triggering Event High-emotion events often cause memories to resurface. Example: The screech of tires on asphalt sent a cold shiver down her spine. In a heartbeat, she was back on that icy road, watching headlights careen toward her fatherās car.
Dream or Hallucination For a more surreal tone, a dream or hallucination can segue into a flashback. Example: The dream unfolded like a reel of film, showing her the beachside house theyād once called home. She saw herself, small and wide-eyed, chasing the waves as her fatherās voice called out in laughter.
Abrupt, Emotional Break For intense moments, an abrupt flashback can mimic a real-life flood of memory. Example: The argument escalated, he slammed his fist on the table. The sound echoed in her ears, morphing into the memory of her fatherās hand hitting the dining room table, his voice booming in anger.
Ways to End a Flashback
Tie Back to the Trigger Return to the sensory cue or object that initiated the flashback. Example: The scent of jasmine faded, and she blinked, back in her office. The garden was gone, replaced by the gray walls and the cold glow of her computer screen.
Return to Present Action Use a sharp, present-day event to jolt the character back. Example: āHey, are you even listening?ā Her coworkerās voice snapped her out of the memory. She turned, realizing sheād been staring at the clock for minutes. OR āAre you okay?ā His voice cut through the silence, pulling her out of the memory. She nodded quickly, hiding her unease.
Reinforce the Emotional Impact Show how the flashback has affected the characterās current emotions or decisions. Example: The memory left her hands trembling. She wiped her eyes quickly, unwilling to let the tears win this time. She had a meeting to face.
Transition with a Parallel Action Use a seamless flow between the past and present through similar actions or emotions. Example: In the memory, she had dropped the vase, its shattering echoing in the quiet house. Back in the present, her hand hovered over a similar vase on the shelf. She hesitated, her breath shallow, before carefully setting it down as if the past might repeat itself.\
Narrative Reflection Let the character or narrator explicitly acknowledge the memory and its significance. Example: She exhaled, shaking off the memory like dust from an old book. It didnāt matter anymore, she told herself, but her heart still felt heavy.
Anchor to the Setting Bring the readerās focus back to the surroundings. Example: The memory faded, and she was left staring at the cracked pavement under her feet, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows over the street.
Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isnāt gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isnāt 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that arenāt brown or grey/black, like San Juanās blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that donāt look like people
Domesticated pets that arenāt re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isnāt Fantasy Zoom
āBooksā that arenāt bound or scrolls
A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)
Iāve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isnāt Kansas anymore.
Me sending nudes: like what you see? ;)

they made rotting a real human emotion, by the way. you too can experience an extant form of decay. just tell the truth and have nobody believe you. look a loved one in the eye and see the little flicker of doubt in there, the sad turn of the mouth. watch them weigh the significance of love, of trust. listen while they say i know you think that's true, but...
i'm going to listen to the album of the artist you like even though he's not really my vibe. i'm going to read the book you suggested even though it's not a genre i usually enjoy. i'll watch the show. i will try the recipe. i will play the video game, or at least watch a deep-dive youtube explaining the really-long lore so i have some idea of what's happening. the movie you suggested is too scary for me, but - i mean, the wikipedia page is kind of interesting - look at the length of the section Controversy.
this is not a burden. i think maybe "burden" and "love" might be oppositional, the way sometimes "love" and "hate" are not opposites. a burden is a dragging. i love you because you brought me to the water, and it is the horizon of your heart. i love you because of your nervous pacing around the edges of the rabbit hole.
often you are right. some songs on that album remind me of the spark in your eyes. the book was really thought-provoking.
more i just want to understand enough that you can talk to me. that you can explain, in depth, why it matters that wheat has shallow roots. i love you, even platonically - your love of this thing leaks into me. i watch you, cautious and dancing, the shy desire for you to smear the colors of this thing into my life, too.
they are your colors, though. of course i want them here, in the marginalia of my life. you matter to me. i want them to crowd the little moments of my day. i want your fingerprints scattered throughout the rooms of my heart.
one time i spent about six months reading and researching a particular author, just so i could talk to one of my friends about him. i never got the chance. she betrayed me, broke my trust, and sided with her abusive ex-boyfriend. standing in the sodden floodplain of what she left over, some bitter part of me asked - isn't that tragic? you have all this knowledge and nothing to do with it.
but i did have all that knowledge, though. when i reach for it, i still feel it glow.
Old doodle of my babyyyy my babyyyy you're my baby say it to me. I bet on losing dogs. I know they're losing and I pay for my place by the ring where I'll be looking in their eyes when they're down.
