Methos is secretly a trickster god pretending to be an immortal, isnât he?
Highlanderâs cannon is a mess. My first encounter with the idea of cannon happened here, where members of the audience rejected whole movies and seasons of the show. The acting, the writing, the wigs could all be awful. At the same time, the show could be heart-rending in its centering of fleeting love and companionship, pointed to beauty and culture as an enduring value. It was fun and sad, and there were swords. Highlander was my first fandom, it has stuck in my head and my heart for thirty years. Like many things we love when we are young they are polished in our memories, and arenât quite as nice when we revisit. Iâm posting both sides of the coin here. The poignant feeling of contemplating mortality, change and dire stakes, as well as the camp ridiculousness of this gorgeous mess.Â

Methos gifset * how to scare your favourite immortalâŚ
Methos and swords, people. Watching Methos with a sword to his throat (or, indeed, putting a sword to someone elseâs) is one of my very, very favourite things. Itâs the way he always looks not only scared half to death, but kind of turned on, too, that makes me go, ummm, yes.
You could write all sorts of filthy, filthy fic about this. (Iâm sure fandom has in fact written whole novels on the subject, though I havenât found them yet and Iâm still struggling with long fic.) Iâm not sure I have a bunny to go with this topic, as such, but maybe one will come to me someday.
In the meantime, I leave you with these rather entertaining visuals and whatever thoughts they inspire.
âBla, bla, blaâŚâ
Yeah, I need to post some more Methos gifs.

Representing all the women, salute, salute..
The Old Guard saw the âaction movies need a male leadâ-stereotype, and just decided to say âFuck that. Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne kick ass.â
The Old Guard saw the âpeople wonât watch movies if the main cast isnât white or Americanâ-stereotype, and just decided to say âFuck that. The 6 main actors are South African, American, Belgian, Dutch, Italian and British.â
The Old Guard saw the âmen arenât supposed to talk about their feelingsâ-stereotype, and just decided to say âFuck that. All main male characters have scenes talking about their feelings and emotions, which are relevant to the plot and the characterâs motivations.â
Hell, The Old Guard saw all the stereotypical gay tropes, and just said âFuck âem all.â
âBury your gaysâ-trope? Fuck that. Immortal gays.
âGay men are fragileâ-trope? Fuck that. The gays kick ass.
âThe film will loose money if a character is explicitly gay, so it will just be implied through subtextâ-stupidity? Fuck that. They flirt, they kiss, there is an entire monologue dedicated to the love these gays have for each other.
And on top of all of that, The Old Guard has a great and clever plot, amazing action scenes, good pacing, great music, emotional beats that donât drag the story down, and a well-executed setup for a sequel.
The Old Guard is a fantastic movie, and it is a great example of diversity that isnât âforcedâ, but feels natural and makes a lot of sense in the story. This is diversity done right.
