Mkay, I’m horrific at making Valentines Day cards, not like that’s gonna stop me.
welcome to a combination 2024/2025 fav and or most interesting reads in review! i missed last year on the book recap so we're gonna just yolo the last two years so i can have a fresh go when i hopefully read more this year for 2026. gonna be a mix of manga, books, and comics! Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert! was dragging my feet to read this one since i love the ambiguity of the ending of the first Dune. lots of fun characters and very excited to see how they adapt the stranger parts.
The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco! monk murder mystery in an isolated abbey with a library full of secrets in the 1300s. definitely falls into the genre of and about ‘books about books’ and what roles they serve also lots of theological debate and religious politics. this book is now part of my personality forever haha Between Two Fires, Christopher Buehlman! this one also now lives rent free in my head forever. medieval horror set in the 1400s, a strange girl with visions convinces a disgraced knight to escort her to Avignon as Lucifer wages war on humanity. #DRCL midnight children, Shin-ichi Sakamoto! a surreal and somehow more haunting retelling and reimagining of Dracula. absolutely insanely gorgeous art and one of my favorite current manga. Die Wergelder, Hiroaki Samura! extremely pulp, very kill bill on steroids and described Bad Bitch Action by the author himself. one woman on a revenge mission, one woman fighting for what's left of her old hometown, and another is starting to ask questions. def not for everyone but it’s completely unapologetic and i love it for what it is. Tower Dungeon, Tsutomu Nihei! nihei of Blame! fame's take on dark fantasy. great cast and superb atmosphere, nihei's command of scale and space is as tight as ever and its so rad to see his art evolved into something looser and more confident. Rebis, Irene Marchesini and Carlotta Dicataldo! fell in love with the art and had to grab it at the mall bookstore. a lovely story about belonging, a hidden little gem. Somna, Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay! a really neat way to do a two artist graphic novel, with one illustrating the waking real life moments and the other taking the dreams and nightmares. the ending twist didn't quite hit for me but it's still a dreamy, erotic, historical fiction piece with some of my favorite artists out there. Run Away With Me, Girl, Battan! super sweet yuri manga i was lent by a friend. navigates a number of different relationship dynamics with a very even hand and the art is super cute. House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski! the big one haha, not quite the life changer i expected from its intimidating reputation but a real adventure of a book to finally read. i give it a 3.5/4 out of 5 possible minotaurs and i agree, its very much a love story. honorable mentions and older reads from 2023 that i forgot about??? a guest in the house, ducks, if we were villains, tatsuki fujimoto before chainsaw man 17-21 and 22-26, the mysteries.
happy reading! also did tumblr change their formatting? trying to add images felt like a formatting struggle im not ready for haha
time for the yearly games round up! kind of a quiet year for me but still tons of hidden bangers and some good replays. 👍
no order or ranking lets go! 2024! Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess! I was eyeing this one leading up to release and grabbed it after seeing some more gameplay after launch. It's a perfect blend of genres and gameplay that I can only compare to the RTS segments in 13 Sentinels and I don't know where else you'd find something like it. Part hack and slash part tower defense, mission based, all wacky PS2 era experimentation. Absolutely gorgeous and some really new takes on traditional folklore. Tons of replayability and def one of my favs of the year (tho the final secret boss can go suck eggs).
Monster Hunter World! and Iceborne! (and Rise) Finally became a monhun this year after watching it from the sidelines. I think all the fromsoft games really prepped me, especially for World with its slower, heavier combat speed. I finally understand the gameplay hook and wrapped credits on Iceborne before hopping into Rise this last month with a friend. Hammer main for life and Dodogama is my fav.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor! Was super pumped when it was announced this was getting a last gen update and gladly picked it up on Black Friday Sale. Loved the first one and had a great time with this one on my PS4 (still going strong!) Some really good character moments and I'm excited to see where and how they end the third game in the trilogy. Merrin is still the best. Also if anyone knows me, bugs and glitches are a feature and an endless source of fun haha
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes! A beautiful puzzle game about art and genius and ghosts and regret. Will forever describe it as the 'Resident Evil mansion except instead of zombies it's all puzzles'. First game in a hot minute that recommended paper and pencil and I loved looking back at my scribbled notes. Highly recommend checking it out and going in as blind as possible. I will see the truth with Laser Eyes.
Shadow of the Erdtree! The banger DLC of the year! Loved being back in the world with a more condensed map and awesome fights. Bayle is def my new favorite dragon fight and Igon and the music makes it special every time. Just full of fantastic NPCs with some of the most personality I've seen in a fromsoft game. Super pumped for Nightreign to become the real gank squad hahah!
Potionomics: Masterworks Edition! Potionomics got a massive final update and I'm so proud of and happy for all my friends who worked on it. Voice acting and endless mode were fantastic additions. Finally rolled credits as well and just an absolute little gem of a game to add to the cozy pile. Wishing the team all the best on their next adventures!
Skyward Sword Remaster! Borrowed this from the library and was happy to play it after all these years. The motion controls always turned me off so seeing the controller option with the switch launch really grabbed my interest. Not a perfect game but def an experimental one that was neat to see payoff later in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth! Ichi and his Hawaii adventures! Had a fun time and spent many an hour in this game. Personally found the story weaker than the previous game but the gameplay was a huge step up. Also Yamai was a fun addition. Looking forward to Majima's Wacky Pirate Adventures next month haha.
Bloodborne! Not my first time but my second and third to get the other endings and the plat! Went a stronk build with the Kirkhammer and then a hybrid Arcane with a fire gem'd Saw Spear. Still awesome, still great atmosphere, loved messing with other weapons, will always come back to this game.
Monster Hunter: Rise! Another Mon Hun! A faster and more agile game than the grounded World/ Iceborne gameplay and some of my favorite monsters I've seen so far. Still in base game and can't wait to coop with a friend into Sunbreak. Still running Hammer, Bonk Gang for life.
Bonus round! Did a full replay of Control and DLC, picked up Death Stranding again, watched a friend play thought the awesome Silent Hill 2 Remake, and started a couple smaller games. Here's to 2025! (Don't worry the book recap is coming next hahah)
It is that time, you have no choice,
Late 60s Early 70s medieval revival part 1
dusting off ye olde tumblr with some crossposting! not really active on the bird app anymore so i'm hopping back over here and on bsky
eyes are still borked by screens so ive been having fun away from digital and going back to pen, pencil and paper
but yeah! got a bunch of fromsoft sketches and some other projects that i hope to finish in the new year (and i'll totes be back for my 2024 game/ book lists haha)
finally remembered my log in!
tis the season to ramble about video games i played this yearrrr
again in no particular order!
Citizen Sleeper! a really solid table-top rpg and i loved the take on cyberpunk themes. fantastic writing and fantastic art and so happy they're making a sequel.
Like a Dragon: Ishin! was super hyped to see this one announced, the never before localized yakuza bakumatsu au game. took a bit of a break while playing but overall had a blast and its honestly the closest thing to my dream kenshin game that will never happen hahaha.
Chants of Sennaar! a really clever language decoding puzzle game (and one i convinced my brother to pick up over the holidays haha). had a lot of cool a-ha! moments and def worth picking up if you want to try something new.
Dredge! another gem on the indie train this year! haunted fishing game with re4 attaché case inventory system and more! lots of A+ creepy fish designs and things to find. i completed the whole encyclopedia and spent many an hour trawling around.
Resident Evil 4 Remake! the big one! awesome reimagining of re4 and a fantastic new expansion on Ada's Separate Ways. they perfectly fleshed out Ashley and Luis, can't wait to see how they handle Steve if we're getting Code: Veronica.
Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon! might be in the lead for my game of the year! my first proper armored core aside from the twenty minutes i've played of metal wolf chaos and it was just a perfect mission based mech game. loved the characters, presentation, and weapon strategies and Contact With You gives me chills everytime.
Lies of P! the one that might have cracked the fromsoft code and one i 100%'d. always awesome to see a new dev come out swinging and nail the landing. really great art direction, music, quality of life updates and i didnt even get close to trying out all the weapons. if you're looking for another Bloodborne, this is it.
Final Fantasy XIV! this year i started the critically acclaimed MMORPG! currently in post game Heavensward with my bunny boy warrior. took a couple breaks but i'll def be hopping back into it in the new year, the real goal for me are the Nier raids hahah
The Legend of Zelda: Tear of the Kingdom! really liked the new abilities this time around and felt like i def used them more than the botw ones, also the addition of the depths was fantastic. excited to see where they take the series next, the open world was fun but i do miss the bigger dungeons.
The Pathless! A+ movement and flow with great colors and bosses. big Journey and Abzu energy with combat and more direct storytelling. always happy to see a new giant squid game.
Bleak Sword DX! really cool little game i grabbed when it came on the switch, it's like a mini dark souls that has each level on its own little tile. still have to beat this one, its a nice one to pick up and put down when you have a sec. digital devolver doesnt miss haha.
Alan Wake 2! honestly the best and my favorite game experience of the year, it's a one of a kind. went nuts with my friend trying to tie all the breadcrumbs together and catch all the remedy references. not a perfect game but there is nothing else quite like it. also i went and bought the old gods of asgard album so im in it deep hahaha
if you're still reading thanks for sticking around! lemme know what you've been playing, im always down to check out new genres and games!
you do not need to smile.
inscryption turns 2 today!!!! happy birthday to one of my favouritest games in the world
