i wish the divide between pro AI and anti AI allowed for more introspection. like the ecological impact has been a primary talking point but often stops at things like data centers being an AI Thing. there have always been data centers to power the internet and yes more are being built in the name of AI but what about the ones that weren't? are they an acceptable toll for being able to use the internet the way they do? have they been located in places that are safe for the people around them? much like the criticisms of exploitative materials used in these computers - do you feel the same way about the materials in your phone, your computer? how long does it last, how disposable is it expected to be? - we can improve on these too if we are willing to admit there has been a problem that we've been turning away from.

what I will probably be spinning into the longer piece is the core idea that mass market production across any media (but books in this particular case) will inevitably have a bias towards publishing and promoting books that uphold the status quo (sexism, racism, lgbtphobia of various kinds, ableism, conservatism, etc) but that this is by no fucking means a New Problem with tiktok or instagram or whatever girl math is in the category of. this shit's been in publishing the whole time, you just either weren't aware enough to see it as a kid or you're letting the recency bias + social media advertising overwhelm your perception. lest we forget the swarthy bronzed-skin brigand bodice rippers when we try to condemn the current state of things.

like it doesn't mean the current state of things is acceptable because well it's always been like that. it means believing that there's some Better Time in publishing to return to is doing an immense disservice to your own analysis and also makes you personally look like a dipshit. like what are you wanting to return to exactly? the same shit but with even fewer women authors, authors of color, LGBT or disabled authors...? there was no time at which the status quo for a published work was without flaw there were just times where criticizing them for it was harder and the record of doing so often lost to history. like dude Lovecraft was there.
