@belle-heaulmiere
Your boyfriend starts mumbling in Latin in his sleep and it scares the hell out of you but upon translation heâs introducing himself, inquiring on the price of grain, attempting to sell dormice, brainstorming silly Saturnalia gift ideas. In his sleep he somehow becomes a 1st century BC plebeian, of modest means but with a pleasant outlook on mundane life.
At least he's not trying to sell me lower-quality copper.
Sometimes out of nowhere the smell of acrylic paint and the feeling of primer on your hands comes back out of nowhere and for a split second youâre twenty years old again and painting a sign for the college play and a young man youâll never speak to or see again after that day is laughing at a joke you made that youâll never again remember the contents of and you have no way of knowing if the smell of acrylic paint triggers that memory for him too. You canât remember his name so you wouldnât blame him if he also didnât remember yours.
the prominence of AI in art and writing right now actually has a lot in common with the old WASPy 1950s cooking trends we now all scoff at, specifically the over-reliance on what is perceived as high-tech and futuristic, the belief that anything that comes "from science" must inherently have value and be superior to the more organic older methods, the leveraging of a supply chain that is all geared up to destroy the earth, and also an end result so uncanny it is bordering on surreal.
what gets called AI today truly is the shrimp jello of tomorrow.
oh also! an obsession with "shortcuts" at the expense of quality, can't forget about that
One factor in the rise of that awful midcentury cans-and-jello cuisine was that home chores, like cooking, were heavily gendered. Youâre AFAB? Youâre gonna be cooking for other people as soon as you can reach the counter.
Some of our grandmothers loved to cook; some hated it. All of them were expected to do it, and the canned glop casserole and jello molds were a way for reluctant cooks to get it over with fast. My own mother cooked that crap into the early 80s, and savored every minute it saved her.
I cannot believe people feel that way about writing, of all things. But apparently they do.
Besides, old women must know something, or they wouldnât live to gather wrinkles and yell from their front stoops.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo đŚââŹ
Yup. We do. đ
God, can you imagine Inej at fifty?
Okay so when it comes to horror aesthetics (hear me out), in the last of the Narnia books (hear me out), there's this bit where the villains claim that they've got Tash (basically the Devil) inside a barn. And if people don't do what they say, they'll send them into the barn and Tash will eat their souls.
But then there's a bit where one of the talking cats who's behind the scam, for some reason, needs to go into the barn--and then he just comes bolting out, and when he does, he's permanently lost the gift of speech. Whatever's in the barn has affected him so much that he's basically lost his sapience and become just an animal. Because it turns out that the real Tash is in there, because it turns out that you can't just invoke the Devil without him taking an interest.
Anyways, when I try to imagine a Protestant religious horror aesthetic, that's what comes to mind. Just an ordinary looking barn with the Devil in it.
ââŚbecause it turns out that you can't just invoke the Devil without him taking an interest.â
Chilling and true.
It makes me think of the stories that were made up during the Satanic Panic by people who longed to be heroes in a great spiritual struggle and therefore convinced themselves that local heavy-metal fans were demonic entities worthy of their righteous fury.
They were so desperate for demons to fight that they projected all their fears onto any of their neighbors who had the temerity to be a little weird.
I am now imagining a story where those people got what they wished for, and found it in a barn somewhere.
Thank you.
Also, sheâs fleeing conditions that were largely created by the US government.
I know an elderly Guatemalan immigrant who spits on the ground when mentioning United Fruit.
This is why I hate the term âbehavioral healthâ with the fire of a thousand suns.
âMental healthâ at least acknowledges that the patient has a mind and some kind of inner experience.
Focusing on behavior erases that; it doesnât matter what youâre experiencing, so long as you can be made to behave correctly.
Not gonna touch âbehavioral wellness.â Do they even recognize what that implies?
With Kamala/Walz going up DAILY, I've seen more people talking about voting third party/Jill Stein (EW) and I believe the above screencaps from @three--rings can explain WHY Third Party votes NEVER work NOR is this the election to screw around in.
Everyone....like she says above.....PLEASE LEARN FROM HISTORY!!!
(Because if Trump gets in, he's NEVER LEAVING).
I too voted for Nader in 2000; I let a friend talk me into it.
It did no good whatsoever, as the OP notes.
I have never forgiven myself.
Please donât let anybody talk you into voting third party or sitting this one out. Itâs important.
explain your gender in 10 words or less without using boring words like âmaleâ, âfemaleâ, ânonbinaryâ, âmasculineâ, âfeminineâ or âandrogynousâ.
go!

The Russia/MAGA/Trump connection has totally reshaped the Republican Party and conservative politics.
Russian are still the baddies, Republicans have joined them.
The need for propaganda joins the two. They share the same disinformation. They have the same goal of ending democracy.
I miss the old GOP. They may have wanted to fleece the poor, but at least they weren't openly conspiring with our enemies.
âMr. Gorbachev, tear down give us that wall.â
Thank you!
Itâs hard. Trump and his lackeys are horrible, and that Project 2025 stuff needs to be crushed to dust and if you fight that side you get to fight some actual goddam Nazis and that has to be an exciting prospect.
Please donât fall for it.
Vote for the side you can talk to.
