@thefrydayafternext I saw your post and decided to take a shot at it! I hope you enjoy! :)
Madge Undersee never let anything get in the way of her dreams.
Everyone always thought that because her dad was the mayor, she got everything handed to her on a silver platter. Little did they know, that was not the case. Madge worked hard for everything she had. When she found out she had a knack for painting, she worked on her portfolio for a year with no help at all.
Madge was currently attending a prestigious art school and for a while, everything was going perfect in her life. Her boyfriend of five years, Griffith Mellark, had just been accepted to Harvard law, and Madge had just moved in with her sorority sisters.Â
âI mean, he has to propose right?â Delly said, focusing on the movement of her hand as she painted her toes. âWhy else would he take you on such a fancy dinner date?âÂ
Madge let out a sheepish grin. âDo you really think so?â she asked, sitting up straighter on her chair.Â
Delly nodded. âOf course!âÂ
âThen you have to help me find the perfect outfit!â she squealed.Â
Dinner was going exactly as Madge had planned.Â
And Griffith looked absolutely gorgeous.Â
âYou look beautiful, babe,â Griffith said, grabbing Madgeâs hand from across the table.Â
Madge smiled, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. âThanks.â She took a sip of water, wondering when Griffith would pop the question.
âSo, as you know, Iâm going off to Harvard in a few days,â he said, stroking his thumb against her hand. âAnd you know how important this is to me.âÂ
Madge nodded in agreement. âOf course I do!âÂ
âAnd now that Iâm going off to law school, Iâve been thinking a lot about my future,â he continued. Madge could feel her heart beating out of her chest. âSo I think that itâs time toâŠâ he stopped stroking her hand. âI think itâs time for us to break up.âÂ
Madge felt as if her heart had plummeted down to the floor. âWhat?â Her voice shook, and she pulled her hand away from his.Â
âListen babe, Iâve had a good time with you these past four years but I mean, we wonât work together in the long run. You know my older brother just got engaged with a Vanderbilt. How would I look if I kept going out with you?â he sent her an apologetic grin. âYou understand, right Madgey?âÂ
Tears began to pool in her eyes and Madge angrily wiped them away. âSo because Iâm not a Vanderbilt Iâm suddenly white trash? My dad is the mayor, Griffith. My next door neighbor is Caesar Flickerman. I think thatâs a lot better than being a stupid Vanderbilt!âÂ
âI donât know why youâre so upset about this, babe,â he said, looking warily at the people around them. The other diners had began to look over at their table to see what all the commotion was about.
âI thought you were going to PROPOSE!â she yelled out. âAnd weâve been dating for five years, not four!â Madge stood up, and grabbed her purse before storming out of the restaurant.Â
Madge stayed in her room for four days.Â
She cried as she ripped apart every picture she had of Griffith, and she screamed at sappy romantic movies that came on TV. Finally, Annie Cresta knocked on the door.Â
âMadge, this isnât healthy!â she yelled from the other side of the door. âYouâve got to come out sooner or later!âÂ
Madge sniffled and threw out another kleenex box before opening up a new one.Â
âOkay thatâs it,â another voice yelled out. Suddenly, Madge heard someone fiddling with her doorknob and jumped in surprise as her door swung open. Johanna stood by her doorway with a bobby pin in her hand. âI am sick and tired of hearing you moping around in your room all day. Sick. Of. It.â she entered the room and turned off the TV. âYou are going to get up, take a shower, and we are going to get you out of this house!âÂ
Madge groaned, shoving a pillow against her face. âI donât want to!âÂ
Johanna grabbed the pillow and threw it to the ground. âListen Madge Undersee. Griffith Mellark is an asshole, alright? He doesnât deserve you crying over him and he is stupid for dumping you. So what if he wants to find himself a Vanderbilt? You are a million times better than a stupid Vanderbilt hussy, and you probably have a better ass too.â Johanna took a seat beside her. âSo hell with him! I mean, if you wanted to be a dull boring lawyer, you could totally do it. He doesnât know what heâll be missing.âÂ
Madge gasped and shot up off her bed. âThatâs it!â She began to pace around her room. âIâll become a lawyer!âÂ
âWhat?â Johanna scoffed. âThatâs not what I was going with thisâŠâÂ
âNo no no this is perfect! If I can show Griffith that I can be a lawyer, then heâll have to take me back!â Madge walked back over to Johanna and wrapped her arms around her in a tight hug. âThank you thank you thank you!âÂ
Madge pulled away and stared at the shattered frame on the ground. It was a picture of her and Griffith on their third anniversary. She picked it up, and smiled. âIâm going to become a lawyer.âÂ
After months of studying and prepping for the LSATS, Madge stared at the sealed test laying before her.Â
I can do this, I can do this.Â
âBegin,â the proctorâs voice echoed across the room.Â
Madge tore open the seal and began the exam. In art school, Madge never really had to study for exams, but as she scanned the test booklet, her heart soared as she recognized the topics.Â
Who knew this would be so easy? she thought to herself.Â
âMadge! Itâs here!â Delly screamed, running inside the house. âThe scores are here!âÂ
Madge ran down the stairs, jumping off the final step and snatched the letter out of Dellyâs hands. Her heart was beating rapidly inside her chest and she squeezed her eyes in a silent prayer.Â
âRemember, you need at least a 175,â Delly said quietly. Â
âI know, I know!â Madge said, trying to calm her breathing. She felt Delly place a reassuring hand on her shoulder.Â
âOpen it for Godâs sakes,â Johanna yelled out from the top of the stairs.Â
Madge let in a deep breath and tore open the envelope. She closed her eyes and unfolded the letter.Â
âWhat does it say?â Johanna asked, her voice unusually quiet.Â
Madge opened one eye and then the other. The letter fell out of her hands and she stared at Delly with wide eyes. â179!âÂ
Delly screamed and pulled Madge into a tight hug. They spun around in circles, laughing and crying and a few seconds later, Johanna joined in as well.Â
âLooks like youâre going to law school.âÂ
A/N: I needed something silly and fun to write. Part two will be up soon! :)Â
