Furrets
As the weather becomes colder in most regions furrets ready for the cold by filling their burrows with dried grass, hay, and foliage and even fur of other pokemon to keep warm. Though younger furrets who are inexperienced and may have not prepped for the winter will over take Rattata burrows by force and make it their own. Though brutish and lazy it provides quick shelter and food for the furrets.

Ophiocordyceps unilateralis - The Zombie Ant fungus
So I’m kicking off my geeky biology facts with an old favourite. This was one of the first things that blew my mind at university and I still find it fascinating and exciting to this day. This is Ophiocordyceps unilateralis…
Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is a fungal pest that infects insects and changes the behavioural patterns of the host. Using ants as an example (as they are the most common insect to be infected by this fungus) the infected ant will leave its canopy nests and foraging trails for the forest floor, an area with a temperature and humidity suitable for fungal growth, here the ant will fix its mandibles into the vein of a leaf and stay there till death (1). The death of the ant is not a quick process however, it can take up to 4 - 10 days for the ant to die, within this time the fungus undergoes a fruiting and reproductive phase. Here the fungus grows and “blossoms” (for want of a better word) by erupting from the ants head and/or thorax! At this time, O. unilateralis releases spores to the surrounding area, to then infect another insect.
If you were born in the 90’s or a bid nerd like me you might think “that sounds familiar” and that’s because it is the basis of this Pokemon line …
Yep even back when Pokemon started, they used this concept to design one of the original pokemon, it is literally an insect with a parasite in it and as the parasite grows it takes over the mind and zombifies it - hence the white eyes on Parasect.
Back to the ants, as this is such a destructive parasite to an ant colony, the ants have developed a way to detect or sense when a member is infected, the healthy ants then carry the infected ant away from the colony and the normal paths the ants take, as to not infect any more of the colony when the fungus erupts and spreads spores around the colony (2,3)
Finally it’s not just the ant that has to fight through this infection, the fungus also has to put in a lot of work to get to the fruiting stage. The fungus must first attach securely to the arthropod exoskeleton and penetrate it—avoiding or suppressing host defenses—then, control the behavior of the host before killing it; and finally, it must protect the carcass from microbial and scavenger attack(4). To me this is very fascinating fungus and was one of the things that made me go “wow” at University because it can show you how much of a horror nature can be.

So I’m thinking of doing these every monday, i feel like it should have a title to it or a hashtag to it but for now I’ll just call it a geek out for now as that is what it is. Let me know if you like these and want to see more or if you have any topics you want me to cover.

PokeNote: Alolan Vulpix
Alolan Vulpix seem to differ greatly from Kantonian Vulpix. This goes deeper than just the difference in coat color and habitat. Alolan Vulpix seems to travel in packs as the lone Vulpix I came across earlier soon was joined by five others. Eventually a pair of alolan ninetales joined as well. I assume this is the alpha pair as they are greeted with licks and barks from the Vulpix but they never give direct eye contact as that would issue a challenge for pack leadership.
Alolan Vulpix though easily startled are not the type to run away they blow their icy breath and freeze the threat. As I observed when one backed up into a bush and they froze the branch instead of seeing what "attacked" them or running away and they're able to create icicle like stakes with their tails and deploy them with deadly accuracy.
I heard from my hosts the elders of Alola call the Vulpix keokeo. Alolan for white or spotless and definitely can't deny they're beautifully white and keep their beautiful coats spotless.

Day two; mount lanakila
Due to my constant complaining of this alolan heat, we were brought on a trip to a mountain whose top is dusted on lots of lots of snow. Well dusted isn't the right word.. there's more than a few feet of snow covering the area. They call this mount lanakila, it's found on a separate island called ula'ula. Surprisingly enough there's plenty of trainers about all eager to battle, determine to become the very best there ever was. I guess Alola does have an elite four with how determine these trainers are.
Due to this I went off the trail to seek a more quiet spot where I can find some Pokemon to sketch and study. Luckily the snow makes this easy as everyone and everything leaves tracks.. well except ghost Pokemon and ghost period... Those chills are from the cold right?
The first set of tracks I come across are a Vulpix... Strange as Vulpix prefer heat.. didn't take long for me to be corrected as I saw the Vulpix but it was an alolan variants in the distance and its fur was white! Its eyes beautiful icy blue and it was stalking around, probably hunting around due to the scarcity of food. Vulpix and ninetales were always beautiful animals but certainly this alolan variant is even more beautiful!

PokeNote: Mareep
Through out my first day at Paniola I I observed the fleece coats of the Mareeps easily doubling in size. At first I assumed their fleece grows quickly but to my shock ( pun intended ). When the Mareeps discharged any electricity their fleece coats shrunk back to "normal".
It seems Mareeps store static electricity in their fleece on top of their already normal electric typing. This is why Mareeps are commonly found in herds, they're able to rub up against each other to create and store static electricity, which is a solid defense against predators that get close with out wasting or consuming un-needed energy that their normal electric attacks would use up. Note to humans, don't go petting Mareeps you'll definitely get shocked too.

Day one; Paniola Ranch
Today marks my official first day here in Alola, thankfully I was able to be lodged at the Paniola ranch for the cost of helping out with the chores instead of paying money up front. I tend to do the feedings and health check up of the Pokemon owned and living on the ranch, with egg-y in a satchel by my hip so I can monitor its process. So far egg-y only moves occasionally.
My Houndoom been doing great with helping out too, he makes a great Mareep herder. Though hard to tell if he's doing it to help out or just to barbeque one for a snack. . . I'll be keeping an eye on him.
I'm looking forward to studying Pokemon here in Alola, though this midday sun is surely heating us up.
Note to self; hit the beach for research and a cool down.

Hi or should I say Alola? I'm BellaMei Acacia. I'm a Pokemon professor in training or should you just consider me a Pokemon researched for now? Anywhooo, I am originally from Kalos but currently continuing my studies in Alola. How lucky Am I?! The sand, sun, clear waters and all these new Pokemon and variants of Kantonian Pokemon. Upon arrival professor kukui handed me an egg but refuses to tell me what it will hatch into... Which is frustrating but exciting too! Along with egg-y here I also have a small team to help me along the way. Salazzle, Lycanroc, Milotic, and last but not least my partner since day 1; houndoom. They all have names but to avoid confusion I will just have them named by their official Pokedex listing.
I'll be keeping notes of what I discover and definitely a journal of what happens to me and my Pokemon, and how we grow and adapt to our new but temporary home on Paniola ranch.
Current location: Paniola Ranch, akala island.
