The bacterial flagellar motor (BFM) is a rotary molecular motor embedded in the cell membrane of numerous bacteria. It turns a flagellum which acts as a propeller, enabling bacterial motility and chemotaxis. The BFM is rotated by stator units, inner membrane protein complexes that stochastically associate to and dissociate from individual motors at a rate which depends on the mechanical and electrochemical environment. Sure thing! So, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the energy currency of a cell in the form of chemical energy. This is sorta like how Joules are a measurement of electrical energy (though chemical and mechanical energy can also be expressed in Joules). ATP is like the money of the cell that can be spent to complete tasks.

So you know how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell? That’s because it create ATP from glucose. Photosynthesis works by turning sunlight, COsub2, and Hsub2O (water) into glucose which can be used by a mitochondria to generate ATP.

From my understanding, the researchers in the article found a way to use electricity to turn ADP (empty battery*) into ATP (full battery). This is insane because, up until this point, all ATP was turned into ADP by either chemical energy or sunlight through various processes. Imagine if plants ran on electricity. Imagine if YOU ran on electricity instead of sugar.
