List of things that occurred about Mesi’s life and character arc:
Forced Viima (previous suncat) to stay in the cult, resulting in her to be filled with intense grief for Viima and immense regret for what she’d done.
Because of this she experienced depression and became malnourished from not eating for an extended period of time.
Chased her hallucination of Viima representing her immense guilt and regret and then got overstimulated for hearing noise for the first time in her life.
Struggled with the harsh reality of trying to navigate, live and survive in the world outside of her cult.
Befriends Kuumato who helped her survive in the winter and then joined Kuumato’s colony, resulting in her gradually healing (at least physically) and processing her religious trauma, showing that this part of the world, despite its hardships, is worth living in.
Gets a name and identity of her own and then gives Viima his own name at the spring festival, giving him a piece of being someone he never got to experience in life.
Realizes that the “God” her former cult worships is a supernatural parasite that eats the body AND soul of her hosts.
Despite experiencing a Arc of experiencing life outside the cult, Mesi’s worsening guilt and shame about what happened to Viima resulted in her having low self-worth, believing that’s she’s unworthy and undeserving of anything.
This also results in Mesi choosing to attempt to end this cycle of religious trauma and parasitic horror, leaving the very home and the cat she loves in order to end her once and for all.
But inside of trying to murder Suncat, Mesi instead tries to “cut her out” of Suncat, the very thing Viima asked Mesi to do for him right before his death. She tried to get rid of her while giving Suncat a chance to live her life.
But this choice of hope and mercy for Suncat is what caused the very downfall of her mission. Perhaps Mesi could not end her without the end of Suncat’s life.
Guard found Mesi with Suncat and, needing to protect Suncat, his baby, his adopted daughter from harm, vigorously wounded Mesi and literally RIPPED her face off, chimpanzee-style.
After this, Mesi runs away from the cult until she reached the berry bush that - unbeknownst to her - is the very one that Viima has reincarnated into. Her wounds bleed out before her, with flies surrounding her, in the same way flies did to Viima as he was brought closer to death.
Guard then finds Mesi and in her final moments, Mesi learned that her attempt on killing her has failed, experiences sheer horror about what Guard is going to do, and weakly begs Guard to stop, as she dies from her wounds while her body is feasted upon by crows.
Mesi’s a cult survivor who prevented Viima from leaving the cult due to her being devoted to the cult’s beliefs, heavily grieves and regrets what she’d done to him, left the cult and experienced a life outside it processing her religious trauma and finding a new connection with life, got a name of her own, gave the very cat she negatively impacted a name of his own, sought out to end the cycle of generational death from a supernatural parasite and died in from fruitless way to end said cycle once and for all.
And I honestly really love her for it 💚
