peeta sacrifices his life to take on cato to save katniss, surely thinking that katniss is the only one with any chance of going home. katniss sacrifices her life in order to get the medicine for peeta's leg, determined to get peeta out.

peeta is set on protecting katniss in the quarter quell, knowing it means his death. katniss is determined to save peeta, knowing that it means her family, the people she is set to protect from the beginning, will not have her anymore.

peeta and katniss both become puppets of opposite sides of a war, hoping to offer a little protection to the other in exchange for their obedience.

both of them see their deaths as a way to save the other. But, it never could. katniss's death could never save peeta just as his death could never save her. they are both wrong. they would essentially die with each other. if one were to die, the other would be sentenced to a life in misery.

in mockingjay, once peeta realized that he failed his initial ideal in the hunger games and was turned into a murdering monster by the capital, he begged for death. he begged katniss to kill him, seeing that there was nothing left to live for. yet, katniss refused him.

when katniss realized that she failed to save prim, thinking that there was nothing left to live for, she reached for the nightlock pill and instead found peeta's hand.

now this might just be my emotions talking, but i think that the sentiments that katniss and peeta felt during the beach scene in catching fire were very much there in "the hunger games" of mockingjay. both knew, deep down, that a world without the other would be miserable.

in the end, i think that they realized in many ways how much they needed each other. it is not enough for them to die for the other. they could not allow the other person to die.

And some of you may not have heard this peak of human culture, but... just after Twitter purchase by Elon Musk got confirmed, a bunch of (serious) journalist put together a Twitter Space (a live audio streaming where any of the attendees can ask to participate) about what was going to happen next, and ... @tumblr joined. And... they invited tumblr to speak. I can't describe how much joy this moment brought me and how fucking proud made me of being part of our little entropy generator here:
