hey. hey, you. person feeling overwhelmed by The Fucking Everything Right Now: go check your library's events page. go sign up for a craft/class/bookclub. go do it. go find something positive to put on your calendar to look forward to as a touchstone of good in the immediate future.
Not sure if I've told this story here before, but once upon a time, I didn't really get the point of most protests happening my area because I viewed them as "preaching to your own echo chamber" in a lot of cases. Ex: I saw people do a climate march through a very liberal university campus within a very liberal city, and I was just like "Okay, everyone here agrees with you. This place has crazy aggressive sustainability goals. What is the point of this?"
Then when Roe fell, there were a lot of protests outside the courthouses in cities near me, and though those city courthouses do serve the surrounding rural areas as well, the cities themselves are all rather progressive and left-leaning, so once again I was like "Okay, what is the point of this?" but I went anyway just for the experience. We stood on a street corner with our signs. Most people driving by honked in agreement with us. A few people yelled "abortion is murder" at us out their car windows, and we yelled back "abortion is healthcare!" Cool, okay, still didn't get the point because it's not like we were changing any minds or there in large numbers (we were no threat to any power structures), and the city already largely agreed with us.
But then we got another SUV that pulled up and yelled "abortion is murder!" at us (both husband and wife this time). Looked in the back seat, and they were traveling with their daughter who was maybe 13ish. She locked eyes with me, gave me the most serious look I've ever received, and gave us a thumbs up just above the window ledge so that her family couldn't see.
And that's the day I learned that protests are not always about threatening entrenched power structures but letting people in isolated ideological bubbles know that there are other perspectives and that if they share them, they're not alone.
Timely reminder that protests have many purposes, and one of them is to steel the nerves of the youth.
mhmm mmhmm yâal sometimes the pride parade is also for the kid whose family is calling us slurs and shit to know they just gotta hold on a little longer and theyâll be ok
Media: Alcohol markers and colored pencils.
Saw a rabbit one morning and the shadow of the branches of a nearby bush made it sort of look like it had antlers.
So it made me want to draw a jackalope.
The end.
"Here's to being alive today, and not dying tomorrow!"
So, recently Hazbin Hotel became my media hyperfocus. Just fully hooked on it. Sir Pentious is probably my favorite character.
This one was delayed because I realized after I had started coloring with Copics that key colors were either missing or unusable damaged.
Since Copics in the U.S. are more expensive and lower quality than they were before their distributor changed, I decided to try getting what I needed from Ohuhu. So far I think they're at least on par with the Copics (though the inks seem a little more vibrant to me), cost less, are still refillable, and give me something I've always wanted in double-ended alcohol markers: a brush and fine tip combo (Honolulu B series). I basically never use the chisel tips.
Colored Pencil and acrylic markers were used for some shadow and highlights.
Mostly happy with it, but torn between wishing I'd added more Egg minions, and thinking less is more.

Hi, tumblr. It's, uh, been a while. Again.
Normally, I don't pay more than a two or three dollars for blank cover variants. I buy the cheap ones to humiliate with my nonsense and leave the non-bargain bin variants for actual collectors to buy and have actual, competent comic artists draw on.
But when I ran across this innocent comic book just minding its own business at 3 Rivers Comicon, I was too inspired to pass it up and made my decision to totally ruin its life. Iâm not sorry, and I would do it again.
Oh. Uh, hi Tumblr. Long time no post, eh? Recently picked up on a drawing I abandoned months ago for various reasons. I just really felt that Stevonnie in a Freddie Mercury pose needed to be a thing. Did I overdo it with the sparkles? Is it possible to overdo sparkles? I still need to get a high-resolution scan of it (and after taking this photo, I already went back and softened the shading in the sky a lot).
I also drew this nonsense, but I am choosing not to provide context.
I found the single greatest part of Watch Dogs 2.
I really need to start remembering to update Tumblr. A recent commission. When the client asks for a Turian in a Tutu, the client gets a Turian in a Tutu. This was the most fun Iâve had with a commission in a long time. Clip Studio Paint Pro and Adobe PhotoShop CC. I just switched to using Clip Studio (formerly Manga Studio) for my line art and I absolutely love it. Iâve always hated trying to âinkâ digitally. Free-form lines in other programs always seemed to come out unsteady and jagged, while trying to work with vectors just frustrates me endlessly. I donât know exactly what this program does differently with their free-form pen tool, but it sure works for me. I think the only thing that could make it better is if I could afford a Cintiq.
Mantastic Four Sketch Cover Comic Book Variant So, sometimes comic book vendors at conventions give me some of their excess blank cover comic books to draw on. If left to my own devices, I usually end up drawing something ridiculous on them. This was one of those times. This is âThe Fantastic Four: Vol 4. #1âł with a custom-drawn cover depicting the Fantastic Four as mantids. Because thatâs what happens when someone hands me a blank comic book cover and then leaves me unsupervised. I just listed it over at my Etsy shop. So please go check it out if youâre interested.Â
Well, everyone. I think it's time for me to give myself permission to not finish Inktober.
There are a few of reasons for this. First are the health issues that put me behind schedule (Nothing major. Short version is minor illnesses exacerbating a chronic illness. Nothing I won't recover from, but I'm low on energy and focus right now). Second is that I recently returned to full-time status at my day job, which already means a bit less time flexibility and since I have the best timing in getting sick, the energy and focus I do have need to be used during the work day and adjusting to a full-time schedule again. Off-time needs to mostly be spent getting some rest.
It's not all bad news, though. A third reason is that while Inktober has been mostly fun, there are more detailed pieces I want to work on. Since time is limited, I have to choose what projects to work on. I also have to restock online shops.
So, this is probably going to be my last Inktober drawing for this year. I say "probably" because it wouldn't be the first time that as soon as I took the pressure off of myself, I went into an inspired frenzy of drawing.
I really was having a hard time coming up with something to draw, so I decided to go non-representational, which isn't normally my things. But I do like things that are curly and swirly.
Inktober Day 23: No prompt today. Just wanted to draw my favorite couple from the late 80â˛s/early 90â˛s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic book series by Archie Comics, which I was completely obsessed with as a child. Canon breakup be damned. Ninjara and Raphael 4-Ever.
Inktober Day 21: Well, Iâm two days behind now. I havenât been feeling well and itâs just really hard to focus. As a result, Iâm really not happy with how this one came out. Prompt was âbigâ. Dragons can be big.
Inktober Day 20:
Illness has put me a day behind again. Yesterdayâs prompt was âsqueezeâ. I wanted to draw a python but really wasnât in the mood to draw something gruesome like one constricting prey to death. Iâm not feeling good and wanted to draw something cute, dammit. So, hereâs a teddy bear getting snake hugs.
