I realize now that dying is easy. Living is hard.
Gayle Forman, If I Stay
“Ahh, darn! Asking anyone else is always so awkward. They make such a big deal out of it, you know?”
She paused, her lips pursing as she studied him. After only a moment’s hesitation, her lips twitched as she held back a teasing smile as best she could. She didn’t want to ask why. She wasn’t stupid. What to do, what to do –
“You and Kanji-kun are such delinquents.”
Naoki nods in agreement. If there’s anything he can understand, it’s classmates making a big deal out of little things
“—Wait. Tatsumi? What are you lumping me in with him for? I barely even know the guy.”
It’s a lie. It’s hard to be the same age in a town as small as this one and not end up as either friends or enemies. For Naoki and Kanji, it had been the former, but it’s been a long time since they spoke. “I’m not a delinquent, so don’t go getting the wrong idea!”
[ inexplicably thinks about naoki/rise ]
“Funny. You act as though there’s a price just for staring.”
“Normally when people stare it means they want something. If it’s about the Health Committee then don’t bother: I’m not going.”
❝You’d be surprised what I tend to ‘ drink ’ for my age. But I didn’t come to BUY anything. Instead, there was something I’d like to ask regarding your sister’s death. It may be a difficult subject to engage on but the information will help to locate the culprit.❞ Not even bothering to tread away from the subject, lilac hues settled on various alcohol bottles. In a sense she awaited for him to turn away from speaking of his dead sister.
Ah, yeah. He should have known. It seems that all anyone ever wants to talk about these days is Saki. Naoki’s bony hands brush on his apron nervously as pained eyes wander, as if looking for a way to escape another conversation that wouldn’t change anything. “If you’ve come to gossip then I can’t help you.” He’s glad, at least, that his parents weren’t the ones behind the counter when she came in. ”I already told everything to the police, and I’m not supposed to talk about it with random people.”
“Kujikawa? ... No, I don’t have the notes. I was...” Absent. Again.
“... What do you want? I already told you everything I know.”
“You’re from my school, right? What do you want?”
{/And there it is. A pout on her face. He sure was picking a piss poor excuse to deny participating in her visit.} “Oh…well…tha’s a shame. Cause I wanted ta show ya this new game I go’ before I had ta leave. I’m only in town fer another few days…bu’ this summer day–overcas’. I didn’ think i’ was tha’ bad. ‘Sides, I hadn’ seen ya in a while.”
That gets his attention. Slender eyes glance up and before Naoki can stop himself, he says “—You’re leaving?” He sounds a little more surprised than he would have liked. A little more upset. He chews his lip. Even though he really doesn’t want to go out... “I guess I can. You just surprised me.” No one ever wants to see him. “Let me just tell my mom.”
Stares at.
“......?” A fox? What’s it doing here? Naoki glances around, but it seems like they’re alone. If it’s wearing a bib, then ... does that mean it belongs to someone?
“no, this is seriously important!” She has her reasons, but she won’t fess up to it now. “I swear I’ll pay you back after school. I just forgot my wallet in class, but I don’t wanna run back upstairs. C'mon! Help a girl out!”
If her classroom is upstairs, then she must be an upper- classman. He doesn’t really pay attention, but Naoki immediately tries to reign in his attitude, to little avail. “If that’s what you wanted then you should have just asked.” He pats his pockets before brandishing 10,000 yen. “It’s not that much, but it should get you something.”
“I don’ drink anyway. I came here fer youse. C’mon boy, we’re goin’ ou’ taday! Like, ya promised me las’ time we’d talk again.”
Maybe it shouldn’t, but it still feels like pity. Bony knuckles curl nervously on the counter. “I don’t feel like it today. It’s cold.”
HOW MANY MUSES DO YOU HAVE---
[ listen ... ]
“—You again? Don’t tell me you’re here to buy, because I still don’t think you’re old enough.”
“square up or shut up!”
“Seriously. I’m not in the mood.” He’d take the pitiful stares over this. Okay, maybe he wouldn’t. “Leave me alone.”
“give me your lunch money, cupcake!”
“—W-what the hell? No! Piss off!”
