Rudolf Steiner, First Goetheanum, (1920)

"After an abortive attempt to build a centre for the anthroposophical movement in Munich, Rudolf Steiner was able to erect the headquarters of his new organization not far from Basel. His entirely timber-clad design was made in 1913. Building soon began and the first Goetheanum was opened in 1920. At the same time, strange edifices connected with the movement grew up around the new ‘temple’ in the grounds at Dornach. The Goetheanum was burnt down on New Year’s Eve, 1922/3 and was replaced by a new building in reinforced concrete. Steiner’s work falls into no stylistic category, its idiosyncrasies and originality makes it as unique as the Czech phase of Rondo-Cubism."

what kind of side projects did you and other ETAs you know pursue?

Austria doesn’t require TAs to pursue a side project (and I think that though other countries ask for your “side project/free time whatever" in your application, they don’t necessarily check up on you about it, so it can be as time allows). However considering that the actual work of a teaching assistant occupies relatively little time, I did a couple of things. My main side project was starting an English conversation group open to all of my Maturanten, or graduating students. We met once a week in the evening and just chatted in English about whatever topics they preferred. I ended up with a solid group of “regulars" who were so appreciative that I was taking the time to help them out, and it was really nice for me to get to know my students outside of the classroom.

My other side project was my real blog, http://livainaustria.blogspot.com

A lot of the TAs in Austria did tutoring, volunteer English tutoring/work (Caritas has “LernCafe" and there are other things like that), and I also know some other people who did English conversation groups.
