Wonderfully Wilde
Wilde, Robin Wilde. Single mum. Failure, at everything. This year will be different, hopefully. Robin loves her daughter Lyla to every part of the solar system and back. Her job as a makeup artist is where she loses herself and, dammit, she’s pretty darn good at it too. Robin’s oldest and dearest friend Lacey helps centre her life and Aunty Kath, annoying as she is at times, would throw herself under a train for Robin and Lyla. Kath with her penchant for all things crafty “reorganises” Robin’s wardrobe – who doesn’t want pom poms on their skirts? When in a funk, Robin hunkers down with all manner of carb-loaded, chip-shaped, chocolate treats, and the occasional glass or two of vino. There’s what could have been and what actually is. Realising she’s the only one who can turn that frown upside down, Robin takes stock of her situation and forges ahead with some incredibly funny moments. (Think online dating when your child plays with the app.) When Robin goes to New York with her boss, she realises she’s incredibly talented in her chosen field. She’s encouraged to learn new methods with latex masks and fake blood. Being free and excited to be in a buzzy city, Robin goes from strength to strength. Robin Wilde is a lady I’d like to befriend. She’s warm, funny, generous and talented. Oh, and, it sounds like she does daggy dancing after a few drinks. Who doesn’t enjoy a bit of daggy dancing?
Thanks to Allen & Unwin and Louise Pentland for my copy. One of the best of its genre.

Triplet trouble
Lyn, Cat and Gemma are triplets who are fiercely close yet annoyingly different from each other. “Three Wishes” begins with their annual birthday dinner only this one is a doozy. Lyn, Cat and Gemma’s emotions are running high and through the haze of champagne and letters from their 14 year-old selves, all hell breaks loose. What caused this public scene in the restaurant? Liane Moriarty has introduced us to three honest-to-goodness, love ‘em all characters in Lyn, Cat and Gemma. They embody individual personalities that are as different from each other as they are similar. Lyn adopted the organiser role and has turned it into a successful career, marriage and family life, even if she is struggling with her teenage step-daughter. Cat is driven and demands to get what she believes she deserves without considering the consequences. Gemma, the youngest, appears to float through life without owning any responsibility for her situation. Behind each of their facades is pain they feel either of the other two will understand having never walked in their shoes. I enjoyed “Three Wishes” on this second reading just as much as my first reading. Liane Moriarty’s ability to detail the minutiae of sibling rivalry and the curveballs that life throws these triplets, is a testament to her writing and the engaging characters she has drawn for us. The introductory pieces to some chapters told by strangers observing the triplets, tells of the awe and wonder they felt at seeing three siblings having fun without worrying what other people thought. In the early stages, the strangers did mention they believed Maxine (mother Kettle) was doing it tough with three kids to wrangle!

Wealth beyond all measure (well, for the book obsessed anyway)!
Amsterdam. One of many cafes to obsessively read and imbibe caffeine.
What is wellness?
How do you define “well”? What constitutes wellness? “Wellmania” takes us into the lucrative business of the wellness/mindfulness industry and asks what it is we’re really seeking when we step away from the everyday “to seek spirituality in a yoga class, or community on a retreat, or purification through a diet?” Brigid Delaney begins her book telling us of the self-gratifying lifestyle that constituted her twenties and thirties. She ate and drank herself stupid most nights and seemingly ate whatever was offered. “I went in face-first, eating Americana – baked sweet potato covered in marshmallows and coated in Splenda, with hunks of cola-basted baked turkey for Thanksgiving.” After a number of meals similar to this, numerous drinks and a dash of cocaine, it’s time to change the habits that were fun and frivolous in her twenties and thirties, and shape up for her forties. Fortuitously Brigid receives an email offering her an assignment back in Australia. Quicker than you can say Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi, she’s booked her ticket for sunny Sydney. The assignment – a 101 day program involving fasting and detox. “Wellmania” is written in three parts – Clean, Lean and Serene. “Clean” deals with the 101 day fast/detox. This part is fascinating in journaling the ramifications of such a fast. Clears the mind and, at some stages, clears everything else as well. However, it did bring into play how much food and drink plays into our social settings. Some of Brigid Delaney’s anecdotes of her cravings, and how she dealt with them, are both funny and gutwrenching. “Lean” delves into the realms of yoga. Attendance at yoga retreats here and overseas is becoming as regular as eating. Find an inspirational place, lay your mat, preferably overlooking the ocean, mountains, or some other picturesque setting, and bend that body. “Yoga opens you up. Channels within you that you didn’t know you had (the body within the body) make themselves felt. These channels force you to open and make you feel more loose and alive.” Reading the pros and cons of yoga was intriguing and the interviews with the yoga instructors were enlightening and frightening! “Serene” enters the world of religious and silent retreats, meditation, back to Ubud for a yoga retreat and finally a retreat called Path of Love. In a 24/7 news-centric world, can we really step aside to be serene, seek peace or are our devices permanently grafted to us? This book will resonate with anyone over the obsession of being plugged in 24/7. We often decry that we’re too busy, stressed or just plain tired to do what we’d actually enjoy doing. By letting go and learning that it’s ok to take time out and smell the proverbial roses, Brigid Delaney found that serenity, like work and exercise, is something vital once incorporated into our daily lives.
