So I'm finally going off hiatus because I finally got some new babies again ❤ it's been a long time and I'm really excited!

Their names are Julius and Maximus. Julius is obviously a crowntail and Max is a halfmoon king. Hopefully I can stay active enough to get all my fish posting out of my system ☺️

Hey guys, it’s been a while!

I’m a little concerned about Louis and I was wondering if I could get some advice.

For a little while now, he’s been kind of lethargic. He’s been laying down a lot more and also sleeping a lot more.  He does still have some spurts of activity where he swims around (usually to greet me or to check something out), but then he just settles back down again and lets himself flop over.

(Sorry for the bad image quality. He still likes to move around a bit when I come near him because he thinks he’s getting fed)

At first I thought there could be a swim bladder issue. He is a double tail, and I know they’re prone to that. He also tends to angle with his tail down a bit when he’s swimming and it looks like he’s struggling to stay upright a little more.  I fasted him for a bit, but it didn’t seem to help.  His water parameters are fine as well. I also want to note that I have my other betta on the same water change schedule and use the same quality of water in her tank, and she is getting along just fine.

Luckily, he is still eating very well and has a very good appetite.

I don’t know, he could just be getting older but I am still very worried that this could be a sign of much worse.  If anything, I’m also worried that cross contamination could occur between my two tanks.

However I’m really hesitant to medicate (especially with antibiotics) if there’s no need to.  Any advice?

What do you recommend having on hand for bettas, food wise and product wise (like medicine)??

Good question! 

For food I always have:

A high quality freshwater flake or pellet (should not be a staple), like Omega One

A high quality betta specific pellet (i use omega one betta buffet)

A pack of frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or (preferably) a mix.

I also have a wingless fruit fly culture, and am in the process of setting up a fairy shrimp (freshwater sea monkey) culture. The betta pellet should be your staple, with frozen being fed a few times a week, and the freshwater flake only as a backup. You can feed more frozen, but you’ll need supplement, so for the average keeper the betta pellets are your best bet!

For medicine:

Kanaplex: a very strong antibacterial, useful for dropsy, fin rot, popeye, ulcerations, and other common bacterial infections.

Paraguard: a tough antiparasitic that’ll get rid of your ich, velvet, and various parasitic worms. *does not work on internal parasites*

Polyguard: Seachem’s broad spectrum medication. It treats fungal, bacterial and parasitic, and though you shouldn’t treat without knowing what’s up, that’s often difficult with fish and this’ll help.

Epsom Salt: with bloat, dropsy, and other issues, epsom salt will help by draining fluids. 

Aquarium Salt: a minor antibiotic and antibacterial, this should always be your first option before moving to stronger medications (unless you’ve identified it and it is immediately life threatening)

Maracyn I and II: I treats gram-positive bacterial infections, and II treats gram negative, very different things, and its good to have both on hand.

I haven’t decided entirely on an internal parasitic agent, but praziquantel has been highly recommended. I’ve yet to come across this.

And some kind of anti-fungal, I just picked up API brand anti-fungal from Petsmart. 

That is about all I can think of, but if people think of more, please add on!

So I have extra money and i want to buy my fish some medicine just encase he gets sick and this way i'm not scrabbling to find a good medicine for him. So far i only have aquarium salt for him but that's it.

Ohh, I’ll list a few of my favorites!

Seachem’s Kanaplex, is a broad spectrum antibiotic, that is easy on beneficial bacteria, but does wonders for most ailments, whether it’s fungal or bacterial.

Seachem’s Paraguard, is an anti-parasitic, and is particularly good for eradicating external parasites, bacterial lesions, and many types of fungi.

Seachem’s Stressguard, isn’t a medication, rather an antiseptic. It’s composite of ions that adhere to wounds, and effectively shields them (like a bandaid). This is an amazing product, especially when dealing with fin rot.

Seachem’s Metroplex is another broad spectrum antibiotic, but it’s particularly useful in eradicating protozoan infections, such as ich.

And so I want to be friends with fish blogs.

I’m 24 (nearly 25) years old, and I am the proud owner of a gorgeous butterfly halfmoon betta named Mirage. I’m new to the betta scene, so I’m likely to have questions and perhaps even need some correction and advice on care.

Mirage is in a 5 gallon Fluval tank with live plants that I’m struggling to keep alive (seriously, plants hate me). He’s a curious dude who likes most foods and literally avoids any hides I give him only to choose the weirdest spots to chill in. xD

I dream of beautiful aquascapes, but don’t have the know-how or talent to pull them off. Still, I will reblog a butt-ton of tank aesthetic stuff alongside updates on Mirage, betta questions/advice, pretty fish, and maybe even some pics of my corgi puppies and old hound dog, ‘cause I am also a dog lover. :D

They treat them like product so they’re lined up on the shelf beside aquarium decor in those little cups, and the only ones to take care of them are employees with no training since they aren’t a pet store.

 So in most stores you see sick or dying fish and ones in dirty, half full cups. Walmart doesn’t care, tho, because a betta costs them maybe 80 cents and they only sell for 4-5 dollars, so they more than make up that product ‘damage’ in profits from impulse bought fish and gimmick betta tanks etc. 

I’ve been to some stores where they’re taken care of, but the only reason is because there’s an employee who already had some knowledge that goes out of their way to look after them.

It’s not the employees fault, the store is just a really shitty environment for fish . It’s heavily air conditioned, employees tasked with them are usually busy with their actual jobs, the shelves allow them to see each other at all times, and most people who buy them (who aren’t going there specifically to rescue one) are impulse shoppers who don’t know how to care for bettas, so they end up in bowls or vases. But Walmart sees them as disposable because they aren’t particularly expensive, so they don’t really care.
