When we were good we were great.
The stench of rot never left him. Not truly. Even now, years from the warfront, all it took was the faintest whiff of damp earth to recall the trenches. Not trenches of defense - no, by the war’s end they had become swollen graves, repositories for the surplus of flesh the medics could no longer tend. He remembered limbs stacked like firewood, their veins black and distended, leaking into the mud. Even the body bags had twitched sometimes, heaving faintly as blood made its last feeble attempt to cling to life. Orochimaru had stepped over them without pause. It was not cruelty, not mercy - merely efficiency. What was one more scream added to the countless that already echoed?
And yet, the memory clung to him like damp mist.
He lowered his gaze to his own wrist. Pale skin, almost translucent under the lamplight, revealed the map of veins beneath. Thin, blue-black cords, pulsing faithfully. Too faithfully. He pressed a fingertip along one, watching the flesh blanch then flush, watching the pulse continue, stubborn and relentless. It should have reassured him. Instead, it made bile rise in his throat. For he had seen too many of those pulses rupture, stutter, stop. He had seen men spill themselves hollow in the mud when one fragile thread snapped.
It struck him, as it always did, how laughably delicate the human body was. A cage of brittle rivers. Break one, and eternity ended in silence.
The battlefield had taught him that lesson well. Mortality was not a mystery - it was a grotesque inevitability. He had stared it down in the trenches, in the cries of comrades, in the bags that writhed before stiffening still. And when he looked at his own skin, he saw no exception. No privilege. Only the same fragile lattice waiting to betray him.
A thin smile slithered across his lips. Perhaps that was why the old stories spoke to him so. The White Snake. A symbol of rebirth, of immortality, of endless renewal. A creature that shed what was dying, discarded weakness, and began again. Not a prisoner of veins and flesh, but a spirit eternal.
He traced the line of blue on his wrist again, but this time the disgust softened into something else - anticipation. If veins were chains, he would unravel them. If flesh was brittle, he would molt it. The battlefield had shown him decay; he would answer with transformation. He would peel away humanity itself until only eternity remained.
Let the others rot in their trenches. Orochimaru would become the snake that never died.
Sketches
my Naruto head canon is that Orochimaru regularly uses edo tensei Hiruzen as a therapist
Orochimaru: I miss Jiraya, and Mitsuki is mad at me after they taught ninja history today at the academy :(
Hiruzen: YOU BRING ME BACK FOR THIS??!?!?
Orochimaru: Yes. It's the least you can do, really.
This is totally normal behaviour for Orochimaru tbf

And why should I care?
...Haven't you ever wondered why so many people go missing on a periodic note from your precious village?
@senjutsunade
Funny, I was just about to ask you the same thing.
@better-than-the-basilisk
Oh please. Otokagure doesn't have any deserters.
That is, unless you grew a spine and managed to abduct them back. I'd be impressed.
@senjutsunade
Abduction? Nah. They probably just got bored of your creepy organ recital and left willingly.
@better-than-the-basilisk
Or maybe they are part of the harvest. Not like you'd ever know from that ivory tower of yours.
Speaking of. Quit sending that oaf on errands, will you?
@senjutsunade
Harvest? What, running low on guinea pigs again? Do you send out hand-written invitations for that or just hiss at them to join your creepy little cult? And as for Jiraiya, I’ll keep sending him just to watch your blood pressure spike. It amuses me.
@better-than-the-basilisk
For my experiments? Always. And no, they come to me because they don't want to be cannon fodder for your precious little Daimyo. It always amuses me that people have the gall to believe their lives are worth something after everything that has been said and done.
A pity, really. Not that they aren't useful in the end. They are always useful.
As for Jiraiya, you might get him back in a matchbox one day.
@senjutsunade
Oh, how benevolent of you, Orochimaru - rescuing the downtrodden only to slice them open for spare parts. And Jiraiya in a matchbox? Please, you'd need at least a coffin to contain his ego.
But of course. They want their lives to matter, to be of some significance. I'm giving that to them. The only downside is that they're not always going to be around to see the fruits of their labour.
A curse of the profession, I'm afraid.
As for Jiraiya -- don't underestimate modern science, hime.

Orochimaru + Assorted Text Posts (Part 3)
Of course, Konoha is destined to fall. It isn't just about Sensei anymore; it's his legacy and the seeds he has laid to germinate. Think of it like cutting off a limb that has become infected -- do you allow the rot to fester, or like any surgeon, amputate it so it doesn't spread?
Ironica though, for Orochimaru to tell the granddaughter of the Shodai about it. Maybe he truly believed that she abandoned the village and its ideologies - just like him. Jiraiya was a fool who believed in childish fantasies. She wasn't supposed to be.
Ah well. He blames Naruto.
If you don't understand, I don't know what to write...
