The cast recording is out so here's another thing I noticed

From I Dreamed a Dance: (Diana to Gabe)

"You whispered slyly, softly/

You told me you would be true"

From A Promise: (Dan to Diana)

"The promise I made to stay and I stayed true/

(...) You'd remember that girl, I'd remember that boy"

It's Dan, Dan said he'd be true and he has been. He couldve been her support if only she could remember that girl (Natalie) and if only he could remember that boy (Gabe)

Don't mind me...I'll just be over here in the corner crying about them again

everything about this post absolutely and also when diana doesn't remember gabe's name, she calls him by dan's!! she says "dan" but she is ignoring him in favour of gabe

there is a merging in her head between dan and gabe and this + op's post are the moments where it's most evident imo

gabe never got a chance to have an identity, so he becomes an empty shell where diana can put all her unrealized fantasies, including her romantic ones. as a matter of fact, there are moments in the show where a sort of incestuous relationship between diana and gabe is hinted at (e.g. "he's a hero a lover a prince", the slow dancing in "i dreamed a dance", etc.) . a lot of fans don't like thinking about it, but to me it's so interesting, especially considering those fantasies actually pertain to dan and to what she thought their relationship would be like when she was young and gabe was just born

#I've actually been having half a mind to make a post about the incest subtext for this show #because I think it is actually more of a symbol of their “forbidden” love #since diana is convinced gabe is real and dan/natalie want to keep them apart #tw incest #sorry for doing this to your post op hope you don't mind but I've been thinking about it a lot #because I find it so interesting how the trope was used #n2n

i know the lyrics and staging of i dreamed a dance are supposed to add to the vaguely oedipal feeling of diana and gabe's relationship, but watching it in the proshot all i could think of is the first dance at gabe's wedding.

"you told me you would be true" sounds romantic, of course, but n my head it's gabe promising diana that he'll be faithful to his own wife. a parent dancing with their child at their wedding is something most parents dream about, and it's something diana will never get to do for gabe.

plus the association of a parent 'giving away' their child at the child's wedding, with diana choosing to move on and leave gabe behind.

i’m so grateful for the proshot because the ending scene is going to stick with me forever. not just the way grief is showcased between and for dan and gabe, but just that one moment, for one moment we can see gabe and natalie as the siblings the should have been. for one tiny second we get to see how badly gabe wanted to be a brother, to be there for natalie as she cried. and for a moment, dan could see it too. the way gabe breaks down as natalie says “it’s just me and you” is so heartbreaking. she can’t see him because he never got to meet her, never got to be the brother he should have been and wanted to be.
