aww look I searched and the Internet provided
Headcanons about their relationship
(i.e. the nature of said relationship, where it could have gone in the future, what was their downtime in the TARDIS like, relationship dynamics, inside jokes, sleeping arrangements, stock arguments, etc.)
Uhhhhh oh boy. Just gonna lob this out there: a lot of my personal Doctor/Rose headcanons are probably not super popular within the Doctor/Rose section of fandom. Because even though I enjoy reading and writing fic where theyāre in some sort of romantic relationship on the TARDISā¦mostly, my headcanon tends to be that their feelings for each other were largely unspoken and unacted-upon until we get to Journeyās End. I love reading (and writing!) fic to the contrary, because the show was purposefully written to be vague enough that you can imagine their relationship going down a number of paths, and I like thinking about those different roads, but my consistent headcanon is that they didnāt really get together until Tentoo came along.
And it wouldnāt be just because of the Doctor, eitherāI think both of them would have their reasons. The age and species difference would probably be pretty daunting for both of them, for one. And the species difference goes beyond the biological; the Doctor has 900 years of Time Lord culture that probably comes into pretty regular conflict with Earth culture. Who knows how that would affect his perception of relationships, particularly romantic ones? Especially for a species for whom sex has been removed from the reproductive equation, and a culture that puts so much emphasis on the cerebral over the physical.
As for Rose, she hasnāt had the easiest time with things, growing up. Between a deceased parent, a low income, probably/definitely dealing with a fair amount of classism/elitist bullshit (not to mention the likelihood of a healthy dollop of misogyny on top, because why be a turd about one thing when you could be a turd about several?), and at least one deadbeat boyfriend that we know of, she is probably a little guarded. Does she love the Doctor? Yes. Even if she had never said it in Doomsday, her feelings for him are pretty apparent (as are his for her). But she doesnāt want to give herself to someone who canāt (or wonāt) fully give themselves to her; she doesnāt want to open herself up to the possibility of being hurt again. And when the object of your affection is a near-immortal kind-of-a-demi-godā¦well, that seems like a great recipe for hurt.
Also, both of them are super great about wearing their hearts on their sleeve while simultaneously ignoring them. Neither of them are all that great at communicating openly with each other about things that really matter. Good job, kids! Dammit, I did it again. Good job, buddies! Ugh, thatās worse somehow.
And now other things! Like where the relationship could have gone in the future. Well, Iām a pretty steadfast Rose/Tentoo shipper, so thereās my answer for that. As cheesy as parts of that storyline are, as rushed as the ending felt, I honestly think itās the best ending you could end up with, given the real life constraints of the actors and production. (Honestly I kind of think itās one of the best endings you could come up with even outside of those considerations. I have definitely read and enjoyed Doomsday/Journeyās End fix-its, but overall, I donāt think thereās much to fix. Those episodes are painful, sure, but thatās not necessarily a bad thing.)Ā
As for downtime in the TARDISā¦you know, I havenāt actually given it all that much thought, as much as I hate to admit it! I mostly think about their adventures outside the TARDIS, and even when I think about their downtime or relaxation, it usually takes place outside the TARDIS. I have headcanons about what different rooms look like but I think very little about what goes on in them, lolol.
Andā¦donāt hate me, butā¦I donāt think they shared beds on the TARDIS. I totally imagine that theyāve shared beds while out and about and adventuring, but given the Doctorās multiple instances of distaste for anything resembling ādomestics,ā I think sharing a bed outside of needs-must circumstances would be a little too intimate for him. I think part of what makes the metacrisis Doctor so special is that, even if it takes time, eventually, freed from his self-imposed responsibility as Spacetimey Moral Arbiter, he will be able to open up little by little and have an actual solid romantic relationship with Rose.
All righty, Iād better stop now before I word-vomit everyone into a coma. Fellow peeps, talk at me! Let me know what you think! :D
