TOY STORY 4 (2019)

New Toy Story movie rankings

#1 Toy Story 4. Stunningly beautiful looking, fantastic use of light, and use of technique for story-telling purposes. Very character-driven. Very funny. The best antagonist of the franchise without a doubt. Great supporting cast. Love Bo and her relationship with Woody. One flaw is that it's maybe the most convoluted in terms of the story structure. But that's made up for by the fact that it really feels like it has something to say about accepting change and finding a new path.

#2 Toy Story: An iconic, landmark film. An incredibly tight script. Funny, character-driven, with a certain amount of darkness that was not carried through the other films.

Tied for #3: Toy Story 3 and 5. What 3 has going for it is that the antagonist is stronger than 5, it's funnier, and the drama is really amped up. But I think 5 has a clearer understanding of what it wants to say, and it looks better.

#4 Toy Story 2: I like the stuff with Jessie and Woody's backstory. But you can really feel that it was originally going to be a straight-to-DVD movie with the B-plot. The jokes are pretty dated. And also, the room that Woody is in for most of the movie is just ugly.

Thoughts on Toy Story 5

Just got back from Toy Story 5. Spoilers ahead.

First, it's absolutely gorgeous looking. Pixar just puts the most top-tier work into these movies. The animals were particularly notable, imo. The level of detail and realism they attained while maintaining fidelity to the world was great.

I really liked the decision to have Jessie revisit her trauma as the heart of the movie. I also really appreciate the conclusion she came to; it actually feels wild that this is the first time a toy character has said something like that. I

That said, while I appreciated what the movie had to say, I didn't find it very philosophically engaging, especially when compared to TS4. I think that also contributed to the fact that I didn't feel as emotional about this installment. TS 2-4 all had tearjerker moments, and this one just didn't for me.

I did like that kids playing with other kids was a major part of the plot, rather than just the toy being their best friend. That's the type of thing that the franchise needs to feel grounded.

In terms of the stuff about technology and devices, it is really important for the logic of the world. But I did not personally find it compelling. Also, Lily was the weakest antagonist of the series by far. I guess the real antagonist is internet bullying, but that's not embodied in a character.

On the topic of world-building, if there was one thing about TS4 that I didn't like, it was the idea of toys as these magical fairies in children's lives who do things for them unseen. And I'm sorry this movie kept up with that concept. In TS4 I feel like it was excusable to some extent, in that Woody trying to do things for Bonnie was an outgrowth of his feeling of not having a place in Bonnie's life, and trying to create one for himself. But I wish they just put that concept to bed.

There were a couple of big laughs out loud moments, but overall I did not find it as funny as other installments. I will say that the Buzzes were funny and had the best-looking scenes. Jessie and Buzz were adorable. The play sequences were creative and fun, and also very clearly on-trend in terms of animation style.

The new supporting characters were meh.

LOVED that The Velveteen Rabbit was used in a scene.

Overall: I thought it was good, but not as good as other installments.

I'm asking for help.

I've been living with a huge amount of debt for years. Years ago, I took out a loan to cover my law school tuition - the school had an arrangement with a bank where they would encourage students to take out bank loans. It seemed like a good idea at the time. But then I ended up not practicing, and therefore not having an income that would allow me to pay off the loan.

I've always managed to pay the minimum amount on the loan. But that's going to be getting a lot harder.

So I'm asking for help. I'm asking that if you've ever gotten something out of a fic that I've written, or meta on a TV show, to please consider giving what you can, and sharing this post.

The amazing thing about fandom is that it connects so many different people from around the world. It gives me so much joy and satisfaction to know that things I've written have touched people's lives. It would make a huge difference to my life, and take an enormous burden off of me, if you could help me out.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

Infinity Train seems like such a fun show to write. There’s so much freedom to put the characters in whatever situation you want, with only a very basic plot structure to stick to. It’s basically a series of character studies. I love that.

ANYWAYS to talk about some of the positive things about Infinity Train…

I really liked how Grace was reintroduced in the first episode, accepting gifts from the kids. There’s so much to unpack in that. She’s placed herself above everyone else, so she can feel special. But then she’s also being really encouraging of the kids and making them feel good about themselves. But she’s doing so in a manipulative and dishonest way. Like she cares about them, but she cares about them looking up to her because it makes her feel good, but she does care about them. It’s contradictory, and it sets her up perfectly for having a relationship with a kid that tests her character, and it’s so good.

Still on the topic of Infinity Train, since there are people in the tag who seem freaked out that Simon didn’t get a chance at redemption…

I think it’s important to the mythology of the show to demonstrate that not everyone can be redeemed. That it is up to the person themselves to make the right choices.

And the whole point of following both Grace and Simon was that they had diverging paths. They went through the same experiences together, Simon had just as many opportunities to learn and grow as Grace did. But they made different choices.

(And I’m not saying that the train deliberately punished Simon for his number getting so high, because I’ve seen people speculate that. I’m saying that narratively, it was good to show how bad someone could get, and then leave them there, with no chance of coming back. Because sometimes that just happens.)

I’ve been reading some of the reactions to season 3 of Infinity Train, and tbh, I think people are reading too much intention into the train itself.

Like yes, it is a therapy train, it’s purpose is to help people. But it does so by placing them in an indifferent system that tests them. One-One, or the train itself for that matter, aren’t actively involved in any of these people’s journeys. The train is a sandbox. There are people who designed the sandbox and put sand and toys in it, but they don’t direct how the kids play. The Conductor is an absent god. The train is just as cruel or kind as life outside the train, it’s just in a more concentrated form.

Also the Ghoms definitely don’t just kill people whose numbers are too high, that makes no sense. They’re a plot device to keep the characters on the train, that’s it. They’re a convenient mortal threat.

I get a lot of questions about how much time it takes to make an 11 minute animated show. I also see a lot of misinformation on the internet about how they’re made. So I thought I would show you all this flowchart I created to explain to my grandmother how the show actually functions behind the scenes. This is not how all animated shows work, but it’s how a lot of them work. It changes depending on the studio, your timeline, the style of animation you’re doing, where the animation is being produced, etc.

This is a very, very basic timeline. There’s actually a lot more that goes into each one of these steps, mostly checking things with executives, running things past supervisors, checking with legal and S&P on things, all kinds of stuff. However,I hope this can at least clear some things up on how exactly a show functions!
