Earthy flavors. People liked that phrase a lot when it came to the likes of herbs, of mushrooms. Of good wine and cigars. The phrase amused him every time he heard it. One of those droll things that could put a smile on a face that normally looked hewn from rock. But if he had to pick a way to describe the flavor of the cigar between his fingers as a wood match lit it up, his go-to would definitely be ‘earth.’
Lighting up helped him keep his head clear, a short form of decadent zen - which was kind of an oxymoron, for anyone actually familiar with zen. Something else that put a smile on his lips. He was at a plot of land up for sale in a fairly busy city; a great chance for a new business.
Smoke billowed out in a thick pillar, his cigar hand falling to his side while the other held his coat closed to brace against the wind. His eyes were lost over the horizon while he envisioned what might be built. Another game corner? Safe finances for sure. A private medical practice; the wealthy could pay their bills, and putting up a hospital was good PR for his front company.
Maybe something genuinely kind. A library, a more affordable clinic, a cheap bath house with overnight rooms. Get the poor and homeless off the streets. Then police have less to worry about - and fewer eyewitness informants when his people did their work.
He lifted his hand and took another drag. Hotel and casino. That would be the best of everything, wouldn’t it? Low stakes gambling, cheap rooms. Competitive rates would keep him in business. For a little while. Then he’d sell all of it while it still looked like a safe investment.
“...Were you expecting me to say something by now?” He breathed the words out. He wasn’t actually sure if he was being watched, but. It didn’t hurt to bluff. It gave people the impression he was more perceptive than he could actually be, which was good for keeping everyone on their toes. “Either take a picture or move on.”
