hawkins lab paid all of will’s medical bills after he was trapped in the upside down, and covered his follow-up appointments. they’ll pay the cost of any medications he’ll need going forward ( will’s on antidepressants and needs an inhaler ), or any other medical issues he has that are caused by his time in the upside down. it was part of the NDA joyce signed when they agreed to keep quiet at the end of season one.

it’s hard to relax, to act normal, knowing what they know. knowing that it’s out there still, infecting humans and gathering strength. but that’s what they do, isn’t it? they keep going, even when the world is falling apart. will rubs tired eyes as he fills a glass of water, leaning back against the kitchen counter.

he can hear jonathan moving about in the other room, and feels his throat squeeze. maybe this time around, they’ll be able to keep their families out of it. maybe this time he can keep jon and mom safe, like they’ve always done for him.

and then, like some sick, cruel twist of fate, he feels it. that prick on the back of his neck, making his hair stand on end. an awful, overwhelming sense of dread makes itself a home in his chest, weaves its way through his ribcage and forces the air from his lungs. the glass falls from his hand, shattering against the tile and spreading water and shards of glass over his feet and across the floor. will tries to take a deep, shaky breath. it’s coming.

will still has a connection to the mind flayer, and they’re both able to sense when the other is near (though will doesn’t know that it goes both ways). but since they forced it out of him in season two, the connection isn’t strong enough for the mind flayer to actually infect or control him.

so eventually, once it has more humans infected and is stronger, it plans to track will down and reinfect him, and use him to get to jane.

i’m rewatching the sauna test, and after the fight with billy at the very end we see him with heather and she says “the girl. was it her?” and billy said “yeah, it was her. she knows now. she knows about me.”

the mind flayer was trying to hide from jane while it gathered strength, infecting more and more people. that’s why it found a new host instead of just re-activating will. it didn’t want her to know about it yet because it knew she could defeat it.

the mind flayer’s motive isn’t just kill everyone. it’s too smart for that.

jane closed the gate to the upside down in season two, and the mind flayer in season three was what was left inside will when the gate closed, trapped in hawkins.

it wasn’t at full power after being forced out of will and having the gate closed, so it waited and bided it’s time, using infected rats to spread as it eventually grew stronger.

that the first host infected being the step-brother of a member of the party was no coincidence. the mind flayer knew and observed enough to know this was someone who it could use to get to the party (and ultimately, jane), without giving itself up right away or being right within jane’s reach.

because the mind flayer knows jane is one of the only beings alive who can pose a real threat to it, both because of her sheer force in a fight and because of her unique ability to open and close gates into the other dimension.

ultimately, what the mind flayer wants is to somehow force jane to open another gate to the upside down, so it can come and go freely as it pleases and reach its full power again. after billy it started infecting whoever it could, based on convenience more than anything while building its strength, but eventually it would have started trying to get closer to jane : likely through will, seeing as it’s still connected to him. it needs jane, so it likely would have ‘activated’ will again once it was stronger to try and force her to do what it needed.

physical changes in will since he was trapped in the upside down / possessed by the mind flayer:

he developed asthma, and has to carry an inhaler. in general, he loses his breath a lot easier than normal, making exercise difficult if he pushes himself too hard.

there was some damage to his lungs, similar to what’s seen in patients who were exposed to airborne mold spores for extended periods of time

sunburns really, really easily, and is more susceptible to heat stroke

he generally doesn’t have much of an appetite, and has to remind himself ( or be reminded ) to eat

his immune system is really weak, and he catches a cold or the flu every couple of weeks

sleepwalks and has night terrors regularly

his eyes are a little more sensitive to bright lights

he’s anemic, meaning his body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells. this often leaves him fatigued or dizzy
