Please, please, can we have more books about involved Jewish characters and Jewish communities that aren’t focused on a. the Holocaust, or b. ultraorthodox circles where everything is repressive and everyone is unhappy (even if they Just Don’t Know It)????
We can always, always use more so this post isn’t intended to say the problem’s been solved, plus the reason books like that tend to get so much attention is that it’s convenient for the Christian/those-atheists-who-are-cuturally-Christian majority to signal boost only those stories. However, I have some recommendations for Jewish books I personally enjoyed that are great escapes from real life and worlds away from both of those topics!
Historical that won’t depress you Miss Jacobson’s Journey by Carola Dunn - Regency spy romance that is also a love triangle Promised Land by Rose Lerner - she fakes her own death and joins the American Revolution disguised as a man. He’s her husband who she runs into unexpectedly. Apparently second chances are hotter than first?? The Vanisher Variations by Libi Astaire - Regency England had a pretty hoppin’ Jewish community. Astaire writes ensemble-cast mysteries set in their midst, and this was the one I enjoyed the most but they’re all worth a look The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker - epic paranormal set in the immigrant communities of early 20th century NYC
Modern day that is Jewishness-positive The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli - YA m/f romance, background casual Jewishness of both leads Eight Kinky Nights by Xan West - f/f romance about two older women who’ve been best friends for 30 years finally getting together because one of them got divorced and the other one gives her kink lessons for Chanukah. A lot more focused on self-care and learning to respect your own needs and health than the fluffy title suggests, and also on queer community. Avi Cantor Has Six Months to Live by Sacha Lamb and also a short story called “Miss Me With That Gay Shit (Please Don’t)”, both of which are trans m/m YA. Don’t worry, Avi lives. The short story “Nailah” by Hannah Moskowitz in the Jewish YA collection It’s a Whole Spiel. One of my favorite short stories of all time, about a Jewish wlw teen dealing with an eating disorder and how Yom Kippur, of all things, helps her to make a step toward healing. I have chills just thinking about it.
Gratuitously mentioning my own books at the end bc why not Knit One Girl Two - contemporary f/f romance between an indie dyer and the wildlife painter whose art she’s using as inspiration for her next round of sock club Cinnamon Blade: Knife in Shining Armor - superhero f/f where both the title character and her best friend Captain Werewolf are Jewish; he’s more observant than she is and even has a bracha for werewolf transformation …and my Mangoverse series, which is high fantasy centered on queer Jewish women
I recommend The Golem and the Jinni so hard
It’s so good oh my god
Also kind of has aspec rep? (don’t think it’s purposeful aspec rep though, but it’s still nice to read)
I caught that too!
And I just wanted to add that SO MANY of the reblog additions to my reply were people squeeing about that one specific book. Which is awesome :-D
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik was deeply meaningful to me to read. Avi Cantor was extremely sweet. I of course enjoyed the Mangoverse (it’s fluff, but also deeply loving and the characters feel like people you could be friends with). There’s a short story floating around Tumblr called “How to Bury a Gentile” which is fantastic.
Here’s “How to Bury a Gentile” https://aerialsquid.tumblr.com/post/181956448562/how-to-bury-a-gentile (it’s free)
b99 is more culpable, actually
all cop shows are propoganda, but most cop shows are made for 18-49 white men who’re scared of face masks
b99′s target demographic, however, is young, queer and racially diverse. b99′s target demo is all the people who’re the most vulnerable to police brutality. b99′s target demo is all the folks who absolutely should never be lead to believe the way to view the cops is the way you view jake fuckin peralta.
b99 had a bisexual Latina cop laugh and say she suggests police brutality, later showing interest and excitement over the exact sound weapon we’re now seeing used in retaliation to protests (side note: when i saw that episode, i thought that weapon was made up because it seemed so sci-fi villain-ish).
they have their whole host of cop characters, including the straight-laced official types, regularly treat their job like a game.
yes they had an episode about racial profiling. but what was that episode telling us? that at the end of the day, there are good cops within the system actively fighting corruption and winning. i recently saw someone in exact words say “b99 taught me that not all cops are bad.” that’s copaganda. even if you believe in your heart that some cops are good, they are still people with weapons designed to kill whose job centers on apprehending anyone they deem a trouble-maker, and they are. not. your. friends.
b99 wants you to believe that diversity within the system creates fair treatment, right? that a gay Black captain and a crew of racially and sexually diverse cops are the Good Guys.
in real life, the Seattle chief of police is a Black woman who is AT BEST allowing the people in her command to terrorize their city, and at worst actively commanding it. the tear-gassing in seattle? the little girl who got pepper-sprayed? that happened under the leadership and command of a Black woman. because cops are cops first. the job itself demands that they abandon their communities and their humanity. we joke about being [x thing] first and human second a lot, right? well, cops really are.
b99 talked about the prison industry, right? they talked about guard brutality, retaliation, in-prison violence, right? but think about the fact that within that plotline, the cops were the only characters who we were told didn’t belong there. how cinnamon roll jake peralta, a Good Cop Who Didn’t Belong in Prison, was interacting exclusively with people like a gang leader and an unrepentant cannibal.
b99 is deeply insidious cop propaganda. and i’ve watched it and i’ve enjoyed it! and i don’t believe the creators set out to make copaganda. i think they were trying to do a lighthearted riff on your standard procedural, and they cast a diverse group of actors, and they tried to write socially conscious scripts, and they slowly snowballed their way into copaganda while we were all distracted by andy samberg getting hotter.
i’m not at all saying don’t watch cop shows, if that’s your thing, i guess. hell, i’ve enjoyed more than one of them in my life. but please think critically about their messaging and choose to reject what does not align with your values. think critically about your values, and what influences them. and for the love of god, stop responding to people’s angry, grieving cries over Black people being systematically murdered by cops by defending your favorite fictional cop. real people are dead.
Black lives matter more than fake cops. that’s all.
conversely,
Can’t stop watching this
just saying

do NOT offer me a big spoon if you see me with a small one. i know what im fuckin doing
can i offer a smaller spoon?
absolutely! finally, someone with some sense around here
idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com
this post went from 600 to 2400 notes in the time it took me to write 3 emails. i’m already terrified for what’s going to happen in there
k but also, as an addendum, the reason we study literary analysis is because everything an author writes has meaning, whether it was intentional or not, and their biases and agendas are often reflected in their choice of language and literary devices and so forth! and that ties directly into being able to identify, for example, the racist and antisemitic dogwhistles often employed by the right wing, or the subconscious word choices that can unintentionally illustrate someone’s bias or blind spot. LANGUAGE HAS WEIGHT AND MEANING! the way we communicate is a reflection of our inner selves, and that’s true regardless of whether it’s a short story or a novel or a blog post or a tweet. instead of taking a piece of writing at face value and stopping there, assuming that there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the words on the page, ask yourself these two questions instead:
1. what is the author trying to say? 2. what does the author maybe not realize they’re saying?
because the most interesting reading of any piece of literature, imho, usually occupies the space in between those questions.
