Taming of the Shrew Mood Board: Lucentio
Olga Smirnova and Semyon Chudin
âThe Taming of the Shrewâ
shakespeareâs character descriptions/stage directions/contexts are so vague it makes me so happy. wanna make Laertes hamletâs ex boyfriend? doesnât say HEâS NOT. wanna make juliet a trans girl? WHERE IN THE SCIRPT DOES IT SAY SHE ISNâT??? fucking put King Lear in SPACE set that shit on the enterprise THERE ARE NO RULES IN SHAKESPEAREÂ
The best part is that pretty much all of the fights are âthey fightâ with no mention of whether itâs with swords or throwing knives or kung-fu or if they just do the slappy-hands thing at each other.
the only rule in shakespeare is that a bear must show up in the winterâs tale. could be a grizzly. polar. panda. hell, antigonus couldâve wandered into a gay club.
This is the EXACT reason why shakespeare endures more than any other writer, btw
itâs what he would have wanted
What Your Favorite Shakespeare Play Says About You:
Romeo and Juliet: Youâre either a hopeless romantic or you really like YA lit, or both. Or youâre in high school and just havenât read any other plays yet.
Hamlet: Youâre gay, emo, death-obsessed, or some combination of the above. OR youâre one of those really pretentious types who like to talk about Shakespeareâs âmasterpieceâ but I donât think thereâs a lot of those on Tumblr I hope
Othello: Youâre either in high school in your Edgy Phase where you think Iago is cool, or you just like the speeches.
Macbeth: You either want to be Lady Macbeth, are gay for Lady Macbeth, or think the witches are rad, which they are.Â
Titus Andronicus: You like slasher movies and also laugh in the face of death, probably.
King Lear: Youâve been around too long and have Seen Some Shit. You like to go for long walks and watch sad movies that you know will make you cry. You feel a lingering sense of despair and are yet ever enchanted by the continuing beauty in a grim and thoughtless world. Or you stan Edmund
Julius Caesar: You took Latin in high school and have very strong opinions about the Republic. You will cry about long-dead Romans at the drop of a hat and you are not ashamed.Â
Antony and Cleopatra: Youâre gay, love war movies, or you only like it because of âI wish you all the joy oâ thâ wormâ
Coriolanus: Youâre REALLY gay and probably most of whatâs up there about Julius Caesar applies to you. You have a lot of Feelings also.
Timon of Athens: You love your friends. SO much. Too much
King John: Youâre a medieval history nerd in love with the time period, have a weird relationship with your family, or you just like Lady Constance a whole lot.Â
Richard II: Youâre gay, on a first name basis with a lot of dead monarchs, or you really enjoy David Tennant.Â
Henry IV, part 1: You like buddy comedies and having a good time. You cried when Hotspur died and felt no shame in this fact. You probably also like the entire Second Tetralogy but this one is just the most exciting.Â
Henry IV, part 2: You watch movies and read books for the theme rather than for entertainment value.
Henry V: You can recite at least one speech from this play from memory, if not more (and will gladly do so if asked). You might be a medieval history nerd, or maybe you just think the battles are cool. You either love Tom Hiddleston or you hate Tom Hiddleston.Â
Henry VI, part 1: You like Joan of Arc. A LOT. Youâre very defensive and excitable. You think banter is funnier than well-played jokes.
Henry VI, part 2: You like Game of Thrones. You have mixed feelings about Humphrey of Gloucester.
Henry VI, part 3: You will defend Henry with your LIFE but heâs not your favorite character. Your favorite is either Margaret of Anjou or Richard of Gloucester. Also, you think death is funny.Â
Richard III: Youâre a self-hating misanthrope, or youâre one of those people who liked Iago in high school but grown up.Â
Henry VIII: You like Wolsey, probably.Â
A Midsummer Nightâs Dream: You think romance is hilarious and no, youâre not romantic. You actually think love is stupid. Alternatively your favorite genres are fantasy and science fiction and you have Thoughts about the line âthough she be but little, she is fierceâÂ
The Comedy of Errors: Youâre easygoing. You love a good wholesome comedy without a lot of weird dark stuff. Puns are your favorite thing. You also have a soft spot for family (especially sibling) dynamics.Â
Twelfth Night: Youâre gay as hell but donât have enough angst-ridden darkness in your soul to enjoy Hamlet. You have all the love of sibling dynamics mentioned for CoE but MORE SO. And you have Opinions about the plight of Malvolio.
The Taming of the Shrew: You lowkey ship Katerina and Petruchio but donât know why. You secretly love this play but donât say much about it because itâs really distasteful to modern audiences. Or you spend a lot of time and energy defending it to modern audiences.
Much Ado About Nothing: You wish it would get more notice in the fandom besides the âKill Claudioâ meme but also have to bite your tongue because the meme is actually pretty funny.Â
As You Like It: Youâre gay and you hate the ending of this play. You have rewritten various versions of your own ending.Â
The Merry Wives of Windsor: You really, really love John Falstaff.Â
The Two Gentlemen of Verona:Â You like Romeo and Juliet. And Twelfth Night. You like both of them better than this play, you just feel like someone should stan for Two Gentlemen.
Loveâs Labors Lost: MAYHEM IS YOUR LIFE. Also you like a touch of depth to your comedy. Jokes are all well and good, but itâs the ending that really brings the point home.Â
Allâs Well That Ends Well: I donât actually think anyone likes this play, honestly.Â
The Merchant of Venice: You like being Conflicted and want a lot of themes in your comedy, dammit! Intrigue? Attempted murder? Racism? Homosexual undertones? Moneylending? Cross-dressing? Lawyer fraud? Weird fairy-tale-esque betrothal games? You want ALL of it.Â
Measure for Measure: You either love the Duke or hate the Duke. You will protect Isabella with your life. You also kind of like being Conflicted but prefer (somewhat) happier endings than the Merchant crowd.
Troilus and Cressida: You love the Iliad. You actually donât care about the title characters as much as you care about the war. Most people have not even heard of this play and you will explain in full detail.Â
Cymbeline: You like fairy tales. Actually you love fairy tales. Youâre close to your family, but you have a lot of self-reliance.Â
Pericles: You probably like mythology and old drama. Also you would kill a man for Marina and think she deserved better.Â
The Tempest: You loved Harry Potter as a kid. You love adventure stories the best, and have a dreamerâs spirit. You have a lot of opinions about the treatment of Ariel and Caliban, and you almost certainly cried when Ariel left for the last time.Â
The Winterâs Tale: The use of âexeunt, pursued by a bearâ as comedy lowkey rubs you wrong but youâre still slightly enthused about claiming the line for your favorite. You love nature and feel at one with it.Â
Olga Smirnova as Bianca and Semyon Chudin as Lucentio in Jean-Christophe Maillotâs The Taming of the Shrew at the Bolshoi
do you ever just willfully forget that the prologue and epilogue scenes to Taming of the Shrew exist
concept: staging of taming of the shrew that starts as a cute romantic comedy, and then becomes gradually less funny as it becomes clear how horrifying it would actually be for a husband to starve, sleep-deprive, and gaslight his wife and force her to obey and agree with everything he says. by ï»żthe end itâs a straight up psychological horror and kate delivers ï»żthe wifely obedience speech while removing petruchioâs guts with a meat cleaver

katherina: why won't anyone fight me on this site. i want to slam one of you smug motherfuckers to hell, with the good words that i type and post here.
petruchio: wassup babe, im the reason Pregnancy-info .net disabled video embedding on their forums, how abuot giving me a nice kiss

baptista: i now hereby declare that all of the guys who reply to my posts are now married to the girls who reply to my posts, and thats that
lucentio: going t o start saying, "Wife City" whenever i see an attractive woman. e.g... "thats Wife City" or "that girl is Wife City to me"
tranio: goign to new york disguised as the Mayor so when the cops turn their back on me i can jack off
hortensio: girls always love to telling people not to" Mansplain" but they do not care of, "Man's Pain"
gremio: "im not owned! im not owned!!", i continue to insist as i slowly shrink and transform into a corn cob
biondello: (in "not knowing what chickens coming home to roost means" voice) looks like the chickens have come home to roost,
grumio: the joke is on you fuck face. i actually love getting screamed at and publicly shamed for my dumb-assed bull shit . I love apologizing
pedant: hello. what is your online user handle please? ok. ok thanks. Blocked
vincentio: to the coward fraud who claimed my username: it is you who deserves to be plagued by this baneful "2". Posted by CrotchLordMiami2 at 3:36 am
widow: my followeres, who all hate me, and wish to kick my ass, are nobodys, and they lack the combat training to injure me, because theyre infants
christopher sly: It has recently occurred to me that I am constantly being clowned on. The people I trust most have apparently been clowning on me for years.
Itâs really weird to see diary-type Bianca blogs on tumblr because most of the admins have a tenuous grasp of the play. For example, most of them are very tied to the name âCambioâ for Lucentio, when in actuality there was only a very small amount of time in which Bianca knew Lucentio as Cambio. As soon as he gets a moment alone with Bianca he begins to tell her that he is not Cambio, but Lucentio. We know this because after Hortensio interrupts his lesson after being attacked by Kate, he and âLitioâ fight, and the times get sorted out, Lucentio says, âAs I told you before...I am Lucentioâ. And even at this point Bianca hasnât known him long enough to be oh so attached to the name Cambio. Sheâs only just met him. And it isnât even as though sheâs been calling him âCambioâ and Tranio âLucentioâ for the sake of others, because in Act 4, Scene 2 she calls Tranio by his name even though they are still very much perpetrating a ruse. And Bianca is not surprised by this! Bianca knew Lucentioâs plan from the beginning. Because he told her! She is not shocked to discover that Cambio is really Lucentio. I mean, come on, we see that part in the play. And the feast at the end is very clearly in celebration of Bianca and Lucentioâs marriage.
Keep your Taming of the Shrew negativity 9241414814828 feet away from me
Itâs so sad that modern audiences turn away from The Taming of the Shrew because itâs really an amazing play. Itâs got two great romances, A+ jokes, and disguises. What else is there?
As I told you before, I am Lucentio, son unto Vincentio of Pisa, disguised thus to get your love, and that "Lucentioâ that comes a-wooing is my man Tranio bearing my port that we might beguile the old pantaloon.

i love lucentio so much!
