Honestly, the idea of being able to read your father's journal and having such a light approach to it, as if this action was weightless and inconsequential and totally normal, something they didn't ever second guess like "wait why am I reading my living father's journal and why is he encouraging me to do it?" is a topic I don't see people ever talking about.

I can't imagine this being a normal occurrence in a family, from any point of view.

As a father, I wouldn't be fine with giving my kids a journal with my personal thoughts in it. About raising said kids. About my bad parenting and my self-awareness of it. About my mental struggles. About their dead mother. About them. All honest, unfiltered, and harmful thoughts.

As the son, I would feel incredibly uncomfortable reading any of that personal information. I wouldn't want to know all of my father's thoughts about me, himself, and every other aspect of his life. It's healthy for a parent to keep some personal things secret, and all children wish for it deep down. But still, they read this journal back to back all the time.

It just shows how weird and strangely boundless their whole relationship was.
