when reading a book, do you read the prologue/epilogue?
yes
prologue only
epilogue only
no
nuance (comments/tags)
Looking at the tags, a lot of people are blessedly unaware of the Discourse, for posterity:
do they think... that prologues and epilogues... which take place within the story and are very much inside of the same book as the rest of the pages... don't count as part of the book....???.....
TV!Ilya is significantly MORE driven by intimacy than book!Ilya is, and that’s sort of a side-effect of the show’s rewrite of Svetlana and Sasha.
In the books, Ilya has hookups and Svetlana is his most regular hookup outside of Shane and is clearly a friend… But Ilya and Svetlana don’t have the deep backstory of childhood, and the FIRST TIME Svetlana is brought up in the book is during Landrygate.
Book!Ilya still feels a deeper connection to Svetlana than any of this other hookups, both because of the hockey and the Russia of it all, but it’s nowhere near as intimate a relationship as in the show.
Meanwhile, in the book, Sasha doesn’t EXIST. He’s not a character, he is a throwaway line about how Ilya used to hook up with his coach’s son.
Show!Sasha is a REALLY interesting adaptation in this context, because while Svetlana is more prominent in the show than the book, her rewrite is a pretty logical extension of what their relationship already was on the page. Sasha’s rewrite completely recontextualises him, because SEEING him and Ilya interact it is quite clear that they were more than just fuckbuddies, and that at some point along the way Sasha, Ilya, and Svetlana were ALL friends.
The upshot being that all three of Ilya’s notable partners in the show are people he has a deep intimate connection with, and that REALLY recontextualises the Hollanov rivalry in some ways too. “Sports rivalry is super intimate” is like… the thesis statement of Heated Rivalry, but this direct comparison to Svetlana and Sasha, Ilya’s childhood friends/fuckbuddies, puts a MUCH sharper point on it.

i don't care if i flop. bunnies do that
hamlet’s “i did love you once” and ophelia’s “indeed, my lord, you did make me believe so” is such an underrated gut punch. it’s betrayal it’s heartbreak it’s vulnerability it’s so over. truly no one is doing it like shakespeare

audiences have no idea how to be uncomfortable anymore
watch movies that make you uncomfortable read books that make you uncomfortable go to plays that make you uncomfortable watch tv that makes you uncomfortable look at paintings and sculpture and artwork that makes you uncomfortable. it is spiritually and morally and ethically and artistically really really good for you. think about why you are uncomfortable. what biases do you bring to art? what biases does the art bring to you? how do you reconcile this? how does your worldview grow and expand and change? all this and more will be answered and available to you if you just engage with art that does not coddle you and treats you like an intelligent human being that can sit through discomfort
It would have been easy to let the trolley run its course.
It would have been easy to pretend that there is no lever.
It would have been easy to keep him.
But someone needed to make the right choice.
Someone needed to be brave.
And Ryland Grace is a coward.
———————————————————
She had to make the right choice because Grace is a coward and wouldn’t let her make a good choice. Instead of being able to send a hero off to space, Grace made her send a victim.
What a situation. Everyone betrayed everyone by consistently being the person they never pretended they weren’t.
Stratt really is the embodiment of the hero who would not save you in favor of saving the world.
