Adam’s gaze fell from Elsa’s piercing blue eyes to her body, and he nodded. “Right, yeah, of course… I’ll get out of your hair, then.” He didn’t expect her to reach up and kiss him like she did, but when she stepped back, he smiled brighter. “Definitely. I’ll– huh, we’ll call you. Together. I’ll talk to Meg about it.” And with that, he turned to leave, sparing one last glance over his shoulder at her.

                      A smile from Adam was worth more than anything else for Elsa. It was so rare and bright, like a shooting star – there for only a few to see then gone. That weight on her chest eased, she herself feeling better about what was to come. “Great. See you later sometime then.” He turned to leave, and Elsa backed toward the locker room, waving as he glanced back at her before turning herself and walking into the locker room.

“My name is Gretel by the way.” Gretel tried to change the subject, taking the mind off the car accident. She looked over at the man who was leaning against his own car. She wished she could be confident around everyone, however she was naturally quiet. “May I please know yours?” She politely asked.

Adam nodded once to acknowledge her odd-timed sharing of that piece of information. However, he was vexed enough to go further than that. Not that his manners were great when he wasn’t annoyed. He spared her a glance before replying, “Adam.”

“Fair enough. Shall we call a truce then?” Aurora said, a smile pulling at the corners of her lips. “Oh it does. I missed seeing your handsome face around,” the blonde gave into the smile. “How’ve you been, Adam?”

Adam shrugged one shoulder and leaned against the counter, looking at her with a faint smile on his lips. “I’ve been all right. Busier than usual, I guess. And you?”

“Oh sorry,” Odette said, realizing she had been staring. He just seemed so interesting. “No um, no there’s no problem,” she said, quickly noticing the person before the man had moved up. “Oh up, you can move up a spot,” the blonde said, hoping it would distract him from their awkward exchange.

Adam raised an eyebrow at the woman, his usual menacing expression on his face. Silently, he moved up the line, not removing his eyes from the blonde. He didn’t like it when people stared at him, and the way she looked at him made him uncomfortable, and thus, irritable.

Megan stood behind Adam, typing on her phone as she answered one of Hector’s goons. They had wanted to know where their boss was, and she had no answers for them. At the sound of his voice, she looked up and placed a hand on his arm. “Adam.” She said, her voice questioning, an eyebrow raised. 

Adam spared only a second more looking at the person in question, who looked away immediately. He looked down at Megan’s hand on his arm, and followed her arm to her face with his eyes. “Nothing, it’s fine,” he told her, shaking it off. He was just on edge, and lashing out. Nothing new, really.

Adam waited patiently for his turn in the coffee shop line. He glanced around the establishment, not being used to getting his coffee outside of the house. But this morning he was in a rush, as he had a meeting in about half an hour and, unsurprisingly, his nerves were getting the best of him. He could already see it going wrong in a thousand different ways. His eyes caught the unwavering stare among the morning crowd and raised an eyebrow. “Is there a problem?”

“And here I was ready to start a budding friendship, shame.” Though his voice held no emotion as he spoke, not even looking at the other and instead continuing his voyage around the others office. When he heard the warning though, he turned to look at the other- “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He told him, because even though he had no intentions of robbing Adam, it was always fun to wind the other up. “Look, you need to not worry.” He told the other as he sat on one of the chairs in his office, “I hardly ever get questioned about my whereabouts, and if I do they’ll just ask you if I was here at a certain time and all you have to say is yes. I haven’t told you what I’ve done, you’re not lying, you’ll be fine.”

Adam glared at Flynn, because it was the only way he knew how to look at the other man. He’d never liked him. He was pretty sure he could never change his mind, even with Meg in the picture. “Sorry to disappoint,” he said, even though he really wasn’t. He scoffed as Flynn spoke. Adam wasn’t worried about him stealing from him, though. Flynn might be a thief, but he was stupid. He had to know that robbing Adam would cause him more harm than profit. “Why do you do it anyway?” he asked suddenly. He hadn’t meant to, but it was something that puzzled him.

A warmth spread through her, starting from where their hands were joined before it spread through her body. Usually Elsa preferred the cold, but this heat was different – this was where she belonged. With him. And maybe, just maybe, with Meg as well. “I should…uhm…I should change.” She gestured down at her gym clothes. “But…” She found herself trailing off again before stepping closer and leaning up to kiss his cheek. “I’ll see you later sometime?”

“Hmpf,” she responded, glancing at Adam from the corner of her eye. “In my defense, I was sick as a dog for a week and a half. After that I guess I have no excuse,” Aurora admitted.

Adam nodded as she spoke, the smile growing on his face. “Well, then I guess we’re both to blame. But I’m making amends here, see? I came to you. That should count for something.”

“Is it?” she scoffed, well aware the two hadn’t seen one another in a while. “I thought you dropped off the face of the earth or something – have you been avoiding me, Bieste?”

Adam folded his arms across his chest, raising an eyebrow. “Well, it’s not like you went out of your way to come and see me, now is it?”

“Oh Adam, can’t we just put all this past tension behind us and work on being best buds.” He smirked, walking around the others office and taking in all of his possessions and wondering if there would be a chance if the other would notice some of them missing if he could get his hands on them at some point. “I didn’t tell you exactly what I did though, so technically I could be here just because I was interested in your business. I won’t drag you into this mess- don’t stress about it.”

Adam looked at him for the longest time, his face blank. “No.” He had no interest in patching up his relationship with Flynn. He knew it would make things smoother for Meg’s sake, but she didn’t seem to mind it too much, and he didn’t think he could ever get along with such a man. For now, he settled for watching him sizing up his office, knowing exactly what he was thinking about. “Don’t even think about it,” he warned, a threat in his tone he didn’t need to verbalize. He scoffed. “Right, yeah. Interested in robbing me would be more plausible.” He nodded his head at his reassurance though. Adam could not afford to be associated with criminal activities, even just like this. It would give his board enough reason to throw him out in the blink of an eye.

“Good.” She looked at his fingers, smiling as she slowly slid her hand in a way that ended with them holding hands. “I’m looking forward to seeing you. Seeing you both.”

Adam’s smile widened, and he gave her hand a soft squeeze. He felt it in his bones; this was the start of something amazing. “Yeah, me too.”

Adam just nodded. Maybe she wasn’t such a bad bet after all. She seemed to have the spunk, and she definitely was determined. He sat back down, still regarding her with a slight crease to his brow. “That’s a nice thought,” he said at length. He thought about his own parents. They probably weren’t in a better place. “I’ll have a look at these files and then you can send them down to finances when I’m done, okay?” he said, tapping the pile of files she’d dropped on his desk.

                       “He was better than most people.” Most people, like Edgar, were horrible. Compared to the man who’d ruined her life? Her father had been an angel. “Absolutely. If you need anything else, you know where I’ll be.” She gestured to her desk before giving a polite curtsy and exiting his office.

Elsa let out a breath she’d forgotten she was holding, so glad that she wasn’t facing rejection for what she’d said. “I’m free on Thursday afternoons and on the weekends. Whenever you and Meg have the time, just give me a call?”

Adam nodded, letting out a relieved sigh. A weight seemed to have been lifted from his chest. “We will,” he assured. He had a good feeling about this. It would work out. His fingers slipped on the bag and accidentally touched hers where she held onto it. He didn’t move his hand.

She leaned against the bag as he spoke, watching his face as he talked about the last time the three of them had been together. “I wouldn’t say out of hand. Unexpected, maybe.” She pressed her cheek against the bag for a moment before standing up straight once again. “I like you, Adam. I’ve never had feelings like this for anyone before. But a part of me sees something in Meg too. I don’t know how she really feels or if she even really likes me, but I don’t regret what happened. I’ve alluded to Meg about it and she suggested the three of us talk it over.” She said her peace, trying to keep herself calm as she waited on his response.

Adam looked at Elsa as she talked, allowing her time to say everything she had to say before speaking. What she was suggesting was new to him, but... Well, he loved Meg. He knew that much. And he was pretty sure that he was in love with Elsa, too. And if they had feelings for each other... Well, then it made perfect sense. “I agree. We should talk about it. The three of us.”

“Things happen.” She shrugged. As he stepped up behind her punching bag, she smiled at his nod and resumed her stance, taking in a deep breath before releasing it with each hit to the bag. She paused at his next sentence, one hand on the bag as she looked at him. “I’m glad you chose to come by.” She paused briefly before adding, “Meg stopped by earlier as well. Getting to see both of you has really…made this a good day so far.”

Adam braced himself for every blow, the impact of her hands reverberating through his body. She was surprisingly strong. He smiled at such a discovery. “Really? That’s nice...” He figured it was best to just address it directly. Adam wasn’t very good at subtlety. “Look, about New Year’s... I’m sorry if it was awkward. I don’t know what happened, but things just got... out of hand.” Was that the right way to talk about it? The night had been a mess of awkwardness and uncomfortable silences, but when midnight struck, it was like everything fell into place. In a way, Adam wasn’t sorry it’d happened the way it did. But he didn’t know what Elsa thought about it, and he’d rather figure that out first before jumping into any conclusions.
