firstly, all the kudos to @pursuingpositiveperspectives for making the post in question (just employing the image here to help people know what we’re talking about)

now, I’m not the best person to talk about this because I’ve not actually listened to Exile nor do I ever plan to. 

what I do know is that Unbound is a small group of audios by Big Finish that explored “what if?” scenarios for the Doctor

Exile was a scenario where the Doctor regenerated into a woman, only for the Time Lords to think she was disgusting and start hunting her down to punish her for it? Or something like that, anyway. Point is, I’ve heard some people describe it as literally the worst Doctor Who story or at least audio because of how horrible it is (and how nonsensical that whole plot/Time Lord reaction is anyway).

and in case anyone cares about who was behind it, the creator was Nicholas Briggs, which I didn’t actually realise until right now, and now I’m side eyeing him pretty damn hard

someone who’s actually listened to Exile, feel free/encouraged to add on your more accurate experience of it/more specific information

So Exile is about The Doctor being a ‘criminal’ in the eyes of the Time Lords and that is why he is being hunted. This particular story is about what is pretty much a ‘head-canon’ that explains why and how Time Lords regenerate to other genders: when they commit suicide. This is something that the Time Lords deeply disapprove of which is why they react so negatively to this.

Yes The Doctor is a female in this episode and yes it is one of the only stories that does not have a classic story where The Doctor is the most appealing and powerful character but it is an ‘Unbound’ range, it is a what-if.

If you think that Nick Briggs or Big Finish deserve scrutiny, check out their portrayal of female characters. They have been miles ahead of the BBC for many years.
