yes yes stratt is very scary and whatnot but i feel like we are overlooking how intimiadting grace made her too (largely in the book). because you expect the leader of the petrova task force to be cold and ruthless and scary, but then her... assistant? second officer? her guy walks in with her and he's very sweet, personable, and incredibly smart. and there's so much dissonance because you're talking with stratt about the biggest ethical decision of your lifetime and he's, like, annotating papers for her in the background. or you accuse her of being cold and calculated and this ray of sunshine just matter-of-factly goes "yep! she'll do whatever it takes!". and at the end of your meeting, probably the worst day of your life, the dictator of the world who has just calmly convinced you to do some atrocity or another stands up, gestures to him, and they casually walk out together chattering about something else like they've already forgotten you're there. that's so terrifying

Ngl the actual criticism could be legitimate but if i see a post criticising an individual creator and when you look at that person's account it's ALL just long posts criticising that creator and attacking them personally like

That's no longer legit. It's at best obsessive, at worst, harassmsnt

Like esp when it's a smaller creator like an author or an artist, if the blogger in question is basically a one-man protest brigade against that person, and that person hasn't actually like. Done anything hurtful to an individual - ie like. Sexual assault, physical abuse, theft, etc

Then it's like. Cool. What's happened here is you as an individual have gotten really fixated on this creator or their work as Representative Of All Wrongs.

No amount of apology or change of behaviour from them will matter, bc you're being obsessive and parasocial.

It's good to like, aware of media and engage critically but when you're just like. Obsessed with a random person and stalking their socials and doing the "this bitch eating crackers" shtick but with beefed up media criticism language, that's NOT good

As always, remember to have hobbies and activities that are not social media, that involve friendships in meatspace where possible, that are creative or constructive in a way that satisfies you

thinking about grace trying to explain what visible-light based sensory input is like. cause like sure he can say "oh i use my eyes the way u use sound" but that obviously doesnt describe it fully.

like think of the speed of light vs speed of sound, MASSIVE gap, no wonder eridians have a longer lifespan. i have to imagine a scenario where rocky realises grace lowkey reacts at superspeed if he sees something far enough away for the light and sound discrepancy to be obvious. cause sure rocky can hear for miles but theres gonna be a delay eventually

its one thing for grace to see the stars and rocky can't, its another thing for grace to see an explosion before feeling the shockwave

So, do we think Stratt tells people about the Grace thing after the mission left?

Cause like, she definitely doesn't have to. Yes the guards and Carl and people are in on the secret, but they've probably been sworn to secrecy and also aren't likely to be broadcasting that they're accessories to murder.

And people liked Grace. He was a popular person on the project, he was Stratt's fun little sidekick who ended up being the only guy who could save humanity. People are going to want to believe that he was brave and he went voluntarily.

If Stratt says “Grace panicked at first but then realised he had to do it for humanity” people will likely go along with that.

Stratt won't go to jail for ordering his murder on top of all the other things she's definitely going to jail for. (Listen, regardless of whether it saved humanity, what they did to Grace is definitely murder legally.) Grace will be remembered as a hero, like she promised.

And she will watch this one act that she knows he didn't do eclipse everything he ever actually did in his life.

Who's going to really remember the fun science teacher? The guy who did experiments with stuff he bought from the hardware store? The goofy guy who kept everyone's spirits up on the aircraft carrier?

If Grace's story ends with him nobly sacrificing himself to save humanity, then everything he did up to that point is re contextualised. Stratt will watch people memorialising a man that she knows never really existed, while the real Grace and all the good he actually did is wiped from history.

Equally though, if she tells people what really happened, then everyone is definitely going to judge Grace harshly.

Like, never mind that he only had a few hours to decide, never mind that he had already voluntarily done so much for the mission, never mind that he was scared to die (never mind that Stratt can still see the look on his face when he realised that he had no choice). He's the guy who tried to put himself over all of humanity.

He was empirically the most selfish any human has ever been, even if only because no human has ever been put in a position to be that selfish before. Sure, a lot of people would probably react the same way in the same situation, but nobody's going to admit that out loud.

People are going to compare him to the other astronauts on the mission (who had months to come to terms with their decision) and he's going to look like a piece of shit.

Everyone on Earth has a personal stake in this decision. Everyone will have strong feelings about it. Grace is either going to be the martyr, the saint, the saviour of humanity, or the guy who tried to destroy them all to save his own skin.

Eva Stratt has to live with the knowledge that she killed Grace (at least the version of him that lived on Earth) more totally than she thought she could, because no matter what she does, nobody but her is going to remember him as the good but not perfect man that he really was.

I like to imagine a sleep deprived and pissed off Ryland Grace uses his teacher phrases but in his "ragefull, yelling at collegues and getting kicked out of acadamia" voice.

"WE RAISE OUR HANDS TO SPEAK!" *even Stratt follows the rule the rest of the meeting*

"I can wait..." *said in a normal volume in a room of screaming frustrated scientists. they all quiet immediately*

"SEE ME AFTER CLASS!" *he then stormed off and now the poor sod that pissed of Dr. Grace is standing outside his office door like he's entering the execution chamber*
