-Cattails II-
(Part 1- right here)
The cliffside was louder than she expected. The wind and the crashing waves below her mixed into a chaotic symphony. Sean and Max stood in front of her, peering over the side of the cliff while Bill held her hand tightly and leaned down to whisper in her ear,
"You don't have to do this"
Y/N turned to face him. Worry clouded his face, replacing his set of bedroom eyes with anxiety. She squeezed his hand and gave him a tight smile and turned around.
"Alright boys. I'm ready"
She was absolutely not ready. Dread was set deep in her heart, but she wanted to be brave. All Y/N wanted was a good memory, some new friends and maybe a summer time romance.
And that's what she was gonna get.
Tossing off her zip off hoodie, leaving just a form fitted t-shirt and shorts. Another glance at her group of companions: Sean's expression of disbelief, Max throwing her a thumbs up as he records her on his phone and Bill... Handsome Bill... His arms were crossed matched with a look of concern. She smiled at him and his stony expression broke to reveal a look of adoration. Her heart swung as his green eyes fell deep into hers. It was a look that spoke for him. Shaking off the spell she turned back around.
Running back a few steps to get a running start, she charged the drop-off with intense determination. With every alarm bell in her head ignored, she lunged for the open air and was soaring through the storm's charging sky.
Then she dropped. Free-falling, plummeting towards white capped waves. It was a feeling of both pure bliss and absolute utter fear. She swore she could hear Bill shout her name, but by then she was consumed by the water. Her body and the current pulled her deep down into the dark depths of the lake. Her muscles strained fighting to the surface and pushing towards the sky. The current pushed back and she broke to the surface.
Choking and clawing at the chaotic waves during a storm wasn't how she wanted her life to end.
But it seemed to be looking that way.
Fighting and fighting only to be pushed back under the water again and again. Every time she took a breath she swallowed mouthfuls and mouthfuls of lakewater. She was drowning.
Fuck! FUCK! She tried calling out to someone, anyone, as she swam with every last bit of strength as the final wave hurtled her into the stony side of the cliff.
Her back hit the rocks and tore through her shirt, ripping deep into her skin. Y/N cried in agony but only swallowed more water as she was caught between water and rock. Being lifted into the peak of the wave only to be slammed back into it's rocky surface again and again.
She could feel her body weakening. Growing numbness from her limbs in the bitter cold. The pain in her back grew into an agonizing ache. The body once full of adrenaline and exuberance lazed and allowed her to fall naturally into the current. She was pulled deeper and deeper into it's murky depths. Her mind drifted elsewhere. She thought of her mother's warm smile, her father's tight hugs, her sister's adorable little laugh and to put her mid at ease: Bill's eyes. The eyes that looked straight through her.
Ok, she thought. I'm ready.
As the dark sunk into her vision and as the coolness took away all feeling, she suddenly felt an iron hand grab firmly onto her bicep and wrench her upward. Her body, too weak to respond, was dragged upward and upward until she breached the surface. Y/N couldn't open her eyes. Arms useless, she could feel someone firmly rescuing her from the lake's turbulence. She couldn't remember how long it was until she felt sand underneath her hands and ground beneath her head. Then, was someone's voice.
"Shit. SHIT. C'mon Y/N. C'mon! Fuck"
It was Bill's voice.
"Please. Please, baby c'mon.".
Her eyes cracked open. First, all she saw was blinding light, until it faded. Then all she saw was him. His clouded green eyes full of worry, his slicked chocolate hair soaked with lake's water, his full lips that spoke to her looked purple from the cold.
Shit, Y/N thought. Maybe I'm in heaven.
But as her hearing came back, it became clearer and clearer that she was very much still alive.
"Oh my God Y/N you're alive. Baby there's water in your lungs, lean to your side"
He gave her a light push to the right and just as he said, she vomited liters of lake water. Coughing from a burning esophagus she tried to turn back to him, it seemed he cured whatever mental anguish she was going through just on appearance alone. Then she felt it. A burn unlike any other inflamed her back and spine. She yelped in pain.
"Shhh shhh Y/N you're bleeding a lot. Just hang tight and abulence is coming"
That reassured her. He settled his hand over her cheek. She tried speaking to him, but only a rasp came through her lips.
"What is it?" He asked
Clearing her throat, "thanks for saving me"
He sighed, a look of anguish came over him, "I should've stopped you"
"It wouldn't have mattered" Y/N whispered back.
"I was the one who dared you to do this dumb fucking thing"
"I wanted to", she grabbed weakly at the hand at her cheek, "and... I'm glad I met you"
A smile broke onto his face and he cleared his throat again, "Y'know I'm going to make this up to you"
"Oh?"
"When you're feeling better, dinner's on me"
A warm feeling came into her chest that felt like lying in the sun. Maybe she was going to get her summer romance after all.
