99 year old daughter of a slave, Ruth Bonner and family ringing the freedom bell.
In. living. MEMORY.
This is something I mention a lot whenever posts about Ruby Bridges-Hall come across my dash, and it’s worth bringing up again – This past is not nearly as distant as we’d like it to be. We talk about it like it was forever ago, but a hundred and fifty years? That’s three generations, max. Two if you’re long-lived like this woman is. In the scope of human history, this is an eyeblink. We’re a lot closer to the slavery era than we like to pretend we are. We’re a fuck of a lot closer to desegregation than we like to pretend we are.
This isn’t distant history. We haven’t moved past anything. We are still working our way through this moment. Anyone who tells you it’s time to get over it and forget it ever happened is in wilful denial of reality, and probably for some very nasty reasons.
We don’t unlearn the habits of ingrained racism that fast. It’s going to take time and effort. We are not done yet.
