gerard way epic coats compilation (run time: 200 hours)
i feel like one of the reasons why mcr is so divisive that no one really thinks about is the fact that their songs which were the most explicitly about death (cancer, helena, dead, etc) explored it with all this theatre and satire and black humour and melodrama paired with these huge intense instrumentals goes agaisnt everything about how we are taught to deal with death. as a culture we see are conditioned to see it as disrespectful or obscene for anyone to make big loud dramatic production around death. so the overproduction makes people feel uncomfortable because its not obviously heartfelt/tear-jerking in the conventional sense or stripped down like songs about death are supposed to be. so they doubt how genuine the song is and come to the conclusion that it lacks substance or real feeling and is about a death which never even occured, meaning a lot of people write it off as disengenous and therefore the product of emo death obsessed satanists rather than people who are actually coming to terms with the death of a loved one. in that way mcr is the musical equivalent of a cats guts spread out in the middle of a road or a mourner wailing uninhibited at a funeral. u either cant bare to look or u cant look away
like cancer was the most understated or "tasteful" they ever got about death and even that is like. very melodramatic and kind of a carcicature of like. the quintessential despairing hospital patient on deaths door. like there was always an element of fantasy and drama in mcrs depictions of death it was never just honest with no frills. like they could have made helena a very simple heartfelt song but instead they made this crazy weird pop rock ballad that alone was like. extremely over the top. and then they add that insane music video lmao. that like. makes gerard and mikeys grandma into this fantasy character of this young ghoulish tim burton-esque ballet dancer. its interesting how socially unacceptable that is lmao. like why is that not considered a valid way of grieving. why cant you make a production of things.
actually, it’s socially unacceptable IN NORTH AMERICAN/WHITE EUROPEAN CULTURE, because if you look at el dia de los muertos, for example, you see flamboyant “festivities” where the dead are remembered -- I’m sure there are plenty of other examples but this came to mind first -- and this festivity existed before the Spanish conquered Mexico.
My theory is that Christianity has always pushed for “modesty” and for the working classes not to make too much noise of anything, not to be dramatic in any way shape or form. The stereotype conservative american macho man does not let any emotion out, and his stereotypical housewife is super emotional, but never in an angry way or in a way that would disrupt anyone’s existence, and besides, will go back to making that goddamn sandwich ASAP.
MCR’s Black Parade album (and MCR in general) goes very much against these kind of things. They’re a band of grown adults in which many people identify -- as far as I know -- as cis men, not that conservatives would want to hear it if it were otherwise anyway. They wore eyeliner, they wore “girly” clothes, they were over-the-top, talked about a lot of taboos, they FELT things (at a time where it was “gay” to feel), and most importantly, they appealed to teenage girls, which, obviously, is the worst thing that could ever happen to a band because (*cough cough* the misogyny makes it so that) it makes them lose all credibility in the eyes of the media.
So of course The Shitty Mail would write a whole article about how the black parade was a cult trying to kill your child, despite MCR being super vocal about how “Nothing is worth hurting yourself over. Nothing is worth taking your life over.”
Close minded people are scared of the things that go very much against what they’ve been taught their whole lives.
This is very similar to something we talked about in class about the play Antigone.
In Ireland death is A Thing. Everyone comes to the wake. The entire family, the neighbours, anyone who may have known the person comes and offers their condolences. Every wake I’ve been to was open casket. You shake hands with the family and go around the room. Pot after pot of tea is made. Scones and sandwiches and biscuits are passed round. The house is bursting with people. It is a place to celebrate the life of the person. The person is then buried within a few days and it all happens again at the funeral only slightly smaller. There is the mass then the prayers at the grave and finally the family goes back to the house. Tea and scones and sandwiches are passed around again but this time it’s more somber. It’s an event.
One of my neighbours said had been sick for a few months and when I visited him after all that he said that he was starting to go to funerals again. Funerals are part of life and part of society. Death is not something people shy away from.
Some of my family live in England and the difference in how death is treated is staggering.

call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
Reminder that in international (and usually national too) womens athletics anybody with 5m/mol of natural testosterone or higher is disqualified. (See legal case of Dutee Chand vs IAAF.)
Do you or somebody you know have PCOS? You are banned from international womens athletics because you are supposedly in posession of an unreasonable advantage in sports.
Folks disqualified for hyper-androgenism in womens athletics.
Francine Niyonsaba
Caster Semenya
Dutee Chand
Margaret Wambui
And more
-
Why are those disqualified overwhelmingly black and brown? Because testing is case by case when an athletes performance “raises suspicions”. They overwhelmingly test athletes of colour, for being too fast and not meeting white expectations of femininity.
Racism and intersexism(discrimination against intersex people) in sports is abject evil. Desegregate sports.

stop shaming people for being passionate about the things that they love. stop mocking people for having unusual interests. like, honestly, i'm so tired of feeling embarrassed for being "too much". if being too much means having deep interests that fill my life with romanticism and excitement, then let me be!!! i'd much rather listen to anyone ranting about their latest obsession with 16th century swords than have a boring ordinary conversation with those who shame passionate people
