100 days of writing: Day 3

For this day I read over the fic that I found completed in my files. Tomorrow I shall edit it! It is mshenko. I do not remember why or when I started it, but there you go!

100 Days of Writing: Day #2

Today I went through all my (online) writing materials. I deleted some things that were no longer relevant and reorganised some things. Moving things to the "completed" folder was a nice feeling, and things definitely seen more organised now. I still have over 30 WIPs though...

I did find a writing tracker that had last been used April 2020. I'm trying not to feel guilty about the year it say getting dusty on the digital shelf. I used it pretty solidly every month for the two years prior to 2020, so I might try and get back into the habit of that.

I also found a WIP that is pretty much finished, just in need of the final proof reads and edits, so I think priority for tomorrow is to read that through and get that edited. I'll give myself a soft deadline of Sunday for getting that posted. Then another one can be moved into the "completed" folder.

Series Overview: A Good Ride

Down to the wire but not overdue for Day 1 of @the-wip-project‘s 100 Days of Writing! I’m going to start with a small overview of each of my projects both as a reference for readers and a way to get myself talking about them. It seems fitting to start with the first series I posted, including the first fic I posted. Here we go!

A Good Ride

This is Ariella’s series and the only one of my series that is canon complaint (at least as far as canon complies with itself). I started it because I wanted to explore canon itself and give myself the challenge of telling a story I wanted to tell within the Mass Effect universe as it stands. At the moment, it starts with ME2 and mainly focuses on Ariella’s relationship with Kaidan but I have plans for pre-ME1 stories and continuing through to post-ME3.

Favorite Completed Fic: Three and Nine. Is it weird that my favorite fic in an fShenko series doesn’t do more than mention Ariella? Probably but it doesn’t make it any less true. This fic features Kaidan and Garrus coming to an understanding after the stand-off during the Cerberus coup. 

WIP I’m Most Excited For: 12 Angry Geth (working title). Set post ME3 with a canon post-Destroy ending. Ariella is charged with genocide against the geth when they were killed as well as the Reapers. There is a quite a bit of world-building I’m excited to share with this fic, as well as a bunch of OCs I’m excited to introduce.

So I signed up for this challenge because I have been very absent lately. New, unexpected job has definitely had a very high increase in work load and that meant free time has gone down whilst exhaustion levels have gone up. I'm trying to find ways to manage it better, but I also want to claw back some time for hobbies and interests. One of these is writing, and talking about writing with friends.

I don't have much time, so I might not be able to do much each day, but maybe a little bit can be done for 100 days.

I haven't opened some of my writing documents in over 6 months, and I definitely feel guilty about that. Today @bardofheartdive mentioned a story of mine that I'd completely forgotten about. Oops...

So I guess this is my "plan" post for the rest of this week, if not a little longer.

1. Open all WIP documents

2. Read them, one by one. Remember them and get reacquainted with them.

3. Come up with one reason why I was excited to write the story in the first place.

Hopefully that will set me up for the days to follow and actually getting some writing done! Woo!

100 Days of Writing

Recently, I noticed my writing friends dropping away. They don’t talk about their stories anymore, they aren’t posting snippets anymore, they don’t talk about this great idea they just had under the shower. And somehow they don’t seem to write as much anymore.

And I get it, you know? We’re all busy. Life doesn’t wait for the muse to come around and we all got some sort of pandemic trauma. But there’s a thing I noticed recently in that I write more if I talk about writing and when I don’t talk about it, I kind of lose the drive. Does that make sense?

So here’s what I’m proposing for one hundred days, starting on June the 1st.

We write. Duh, of course. But I don’t want us to get stuck on wordcounts. Writing is not just about the amount of words we throw on the page, writing is also about developing the story further, the characters, worldbuilding, themes, and all these intangible things.

For 100 days, every day, you write about something that pertains to your stories. It can be about what you wrote of course, maybe a snippet you really liked. But it can also be about a song that fits so well, a faceclaim, a worldbuilding idea you had. It doesn’t have to be long, but it has to be every day.

Yes, I’m dialing up the pressure! I want you to think “oh, I can write about this today on my 100daysofwriting post!” or maybe “oh shit, I need to find something to show for my 100daysofwriting post!”.

Every day. For one hundred days. Write about your writing.

I’m basing this event around this tumblr. Mention this blog (the-wip-project) and use the tag #100daysofwriting so that I and everyone else can see it.

You can make your posts anywhere, of course, I just find it easier to interact with posts here. If you post on a blog or on twitter or anywhere else, maybe you can make tumblr post to link to it? This event is mostly for yourself and if you want to write in your personal journal you are not obligated to share that with anyone. Maybe you see me in a chat somewhere and rather want to write there, that’s fine too.

I hope that talking/chatting/posting about writing will be its own fountain of inspiration.

On 16th October, it was revealed that Yahoo! is planning to shut off posting to Yahoo! Groups on 28th October, and permanently wipe all data from Groups on 14th December, in yet another instance of an internet space shutdown that will be hugely detrimental to fans and fan history. The Organization for Transformative Works is doing everything it can to try and preserve the fannish activity and works on Yahoo! Groups before the shutdown. If you are a member or admin of a Group and want to try and preserve its contents, here are some things you can do.

Contact the OTW’s Open Doors project, which works to import at-risk fan archives, if you’re the admin of a Yahoo! Group and want to import its fanworks to AO3. If you’re not the admin of a Yahoo! Group, you can still publish your own fanworks to AO3 - but the permission of a group admin is needed in order to import all the fanworks associated with a Group. Create a page for the Group on Fanlore. Anyone can edit Fanlore and it’s completely free - you just need to sign up for an account first. Once you have, you’ll need to wait four hours before you can create any new pages - this is a precaution against spam accounts. This tutorial will help you get started with editing, and this article will give you more information on how to start a new page.

Kaidan was typically the early-riser, but James was an N7 and this was important. The most important mission to date, he reminded himself, as he dragged himself out of bed at 0500. Even without an alarm Kaidan would still be up by 0630, so he’d have to be quick

By 0622 the food was plated and the coffee poured. James grinned; he was actually going to make it. He put the finishing touches on the tray and carried it upstairs. Kaidan was still under the covers, sprawled out on his back. James leaned down and kissed him.

“Happy anniversary, Kaidan,” he said, when his boyfriend woke up. 

“Happy anniversary. Breakfast in bed?” Kaidan took the offered tray and his eyes lit up. “French toast and bacon, just like our first breakfast.”

“Yeah,” James said, clambering back into bed himself. “I wanted to do something special.”

“Huh. Me too.” Kaidan reached into the nightstand, producing a small, black velvet box. “James, this last year has been the best year of my life. Because of you. It all started with us pretending to be married and, well, I want to make it real. And I, uh, seem to remember you wanted an emerald.” He opened the box to reveal a simple gold band with one elegant emerald. “James Federico Vega, will you marry me?”

“Oh, hell yes!” James said, promptly forgetting about breakfast.
