starting to realize that my determined sunshine has the possibility of making more pessimistic people underestimate my intelligence, as can be seen in a conversation i had recently wherein a particularly misanthropic person attempted (and of course failed) to get me to see how ultimately unintelligent it is for me to believe in love, and i would just like to say: good. i don’t care whether my intelligence is recognized and honestly prefer when it isn’t. i do not want to be seen as the treasure i am by people who i don’t appreciate.
@99hp asked: RE : fake smile headcanon, is there a tell or sign of when she's ingenuine? has there been anyone who could tell when she is unhappy inside?
The easiest tell that her smile isn't sincere is that she'll duck her head or look away, refuse to make eye contact when she's smiling. Odette is a forward person with a lot of spunk and energy, so her refusing to look someone in the face while smiling, deflecting conversation? That's a surefire way to tell she's not feeling her usual self.
Her thought process, I think, is something along the lines of "I'm not looking at them, so they can't get a good look to see whether or not I'm actually really smiling."

While Odette is the sort of person who generally has a very peppy, sunny demeanor around pretty much everyone, it's easy to tell when she's at her best: she's the sort that radiates happiness like a sunbeam, warming those around her. Some people assume this means she's ditzy or airheaded, but neither assumption could be further from the truth.
She just tries to seem as optimistic as she can, if only because she knows other people could use some cheering up, especially when things get rough when she's training at Grissom Academy.
★ - sad headcanon
Of course, being a natural optimist has its downsides. She doesn't like to show herself as sad in front of other people, partly because she doesn't like to make anyone worry, and partly because her usually bubbly, enthusiastic nature goes against seeming sad, and she's had far too many classmates who don't ask the questions right to show it.
She's a master of the fake smile, flashed quick enough that no one will question it, and as things got worse the longer the Reaper War dragged on, that became more her normal state than anything else.
☾ - sleep headcanon
In general, she has pretty good sleeping habits. Even while still living at home, because of ballet and her home schooling schedule, she kept up a pretty tight sleep schedule. Up at six for yoga and a jog, breakfast, stretching, anything else she needed to do during the day then mealtimes, and then to bed at ten after cooldown stretches.
That being said, she sleeps like a brick, and her classmates sometimes joke that she'd probably sleep through the station exploding, her little sealed and shielded room floating through space with her asleep inside it.

thinking about how the “you make me feel human” line hits different when considering how biotic kids were treated as freaks, how they were the subjects of unethical experiments and studies, how they were forced to have brain surgery as teenagers to satisfy the adults around them, how they were referred to in law as something not quite human, how-
"L4's aren't too bad," she remarked with an appreciative nod. "I used an L4 for... oh, jeez, must have been... at least ten years, maybe? I used it up until a few months before the Reapers hit Earth. I'd finished my ICT training and was given my N7 designation, so the Alliance was willing to foot the bill for an upgrade. L4s just weren't doing it for me. Too much stress, and I'd get headaches; severe stress and I'd get migraines. Kind of like the old L2s did." She hadn't talked about the fact that she had L2 implants before, at least not yet. She didn't want to scare the poor girl.
"I'm using an L5x now. Finally a series that's able to keep up with the output I can generate... especially since I'm experienced with spatial distortion biotics." She could use telekinesis and kinetic fields easily, but spatial distortion fields were by far the most advanced, and by far the most difficult to utilize.
"Hmm... You know, I might have a gun that's not too bad. I know not everyone's... well, ready to fire a gun. The Asari developed a really good one, though, that synergizes really well with biotics. Not surprising coming from them, though." Alisa pulled out her pistol from her locker, holding it aloft for Odette.
"It's called an Acolyte. I can get one calibrated for you, but it's not about being... accurate like you might think. It's a little lighter than your average pistol, but it shoots a projectile that explodes on impact and does incredibly well against kinetic barriers, or shields. Other than that, your key is just learning to use it in synergy with your mnemonic gestures. Pistols and SMGs are going to be your best bet, since they're the lightest and will have the least effect on how efficiently you can use your biotics." Guns were unfortunately a necessity.
"If you want, next time we're at the Citadel, I can take you to Armax Arena. It's a pretty great place to practice in a safe environment, rather than just throwing you in and expecting you to know how to use it. Nobody learns that kind of thing overnight. If we can't get the requisition order in time, I'll recalibrate my Acolyte for you, and you can use it at Armax. I've got my N7 Eagle pistol I can use instead. It'll be fine at Armax." If her job was to walk Odette through a potential position with the Alliance, then she was going to do everything she could. Biotics were needed, right now... And with how things had gone recently with recovery efforts, they were needed more than ever.
"I was eligible for an upgrade, and my uncles could afford it, but... you know. Reapers and everything."
Which was, admittedly, putting it exceptionally lightly. The Reapers had disrupted everyone's lives all the way down the chain, and then some. To say nothing of the Cerberus involvement- those lunatics attacking Grissom Academy had almost been worse than the invasion. The Reapers were at least a threat that had a single minded goal that could be, in some twisted way, understood.
Whatever Cerberus wanted couldn't have been quantified easily. She still recalled her uncle's anxious cursing over the phone when she'd called from the Normandy after she and the other students were rescued.
Pulling her hair over her shoulder, she shook off her thoughts and focused instead on the pistol, eyes wide, listening very intently to every word. It definitely didn't look as... aggressive as some of the weapons her classmates had trained with. Something a lot more... elegant, almost.
"It kind of reminds me of a pointe shoe." An odd comment, she realized, and so after a moment, she elaborated. "It looks like it's designed to work with you... like it's part of you, I mean."
Which probably didn't make much more sense. But she was a dancer before she was anything else, going so far as to inform how she moved when using her biotics.
Fingers pulled through a few loose strands of her hair before she nodded, slowly, in agreement.
"Okay. Okay yeah I think that'd be a good idea. Going there and giving it a try, I mean. I can't promise I'll hit anything but I can do my best, y'know?"
@biotichearted cont'd ;;
Right... Jack. That had been the woman's name. She'd heard a few things from Kaidan about her, though it was far and few between. Apparently, she was an excellent biotic, and those of them that were top of their class in biotics--classified as 'adepts', at least in the Alliance--had a tendency to stand out... a lot.
"Ah, short solidarity sounds about right. He's not around, but whenever Kaidan--ah, Major Alenko, I mean, decides to grace us with his presence, get ready for a few quips." She wasn't sure if Kaidan would end up working off her ship again, but it was a possibility. They'd finished the majority of their investigation, though there were still a few loose ends to tie up.
"Don't worry, though. He knows who the better biotic is." Alisa playfully pointed to herself, smirking. "Anyway... The first thing we need to do is get you fitted for a set of armour. What implant are you using? Are you still on the old L4 series, or did they give you the L5 series? That way, I know what kinds of armour we can look at to get you. I have... excellent requisitions access between my N designation and Spectre status." In other words, Odette would be getting top-of-the-line gear, just like the rest of the crew.
"The other thing to consider is... guns. Were you trained in any gun usage, or do you have any preferences? Keep in mind that the more you carry, the more limited your biotic usage will be."
The grin on Odette's face spread at the comment, crinkling up her eyes at the corners. Maybe things were weird right now, but Alisa was genuinely nice. And understood better than a lot of other people what it felt like to wake up every day with a weapon in your head you just couldn't put down.
"I'm still on the old L4 series, but it works really well, even with the stuff I can throw out. My amp's top of the line, though, so I've at least got that going for me."
The question of the gun, though, did give her pause, and she leaned back for a moment, blinking towards the ceiling. It wasn't that her uncles, or Grissom Academy obviously, had ever been against training her with weapons. She just... had never considered it herself.
"I uh... I have never actually touched a gun. I focused a lot more on my biotics, and I know I can't like... rely rely on them all the time, but it felt really awkward, you know? Like they felt weird in my hands? But I'm willing to learn! I just can't really guarantee I'll be all that good at it, at least not at first."

@furyisms said: “i know you’re new, but we do things a little differently here.”
Odette was not someone who had sought out military by choice. She had studied dance, and even during her time at Grissom Academy, she’d still taken lessons via vid when not in regular classes or extensive biotic training.
But then everything had gotten turned on its head, and a small young woman with wide blue eyes and powerful biotics had found herself on an Alliance ship.
“Yeah, no, that… it makes sense. That things would be different, I mean. Sorry, I uh… I never actually was gonna go into the military originally? But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to do my best to help out! We all have to do our part, right? And I heard you’re a really powerful biotic too, so… I really look forward to learning more from you!”
The poor girl was nervous, and Alisa could tell. She knew things here weren’t like they were at Grissom; here they were stricter and more rigid, though… she was glad, at least, that it was at Grissom where things were… not the way that Alisa had initially learned to use her biotics, anyway.
“Well, you went to Grissom, so that’s a start, at least. And I heard one of your teachers was a powerful biotic, too.” She couldn’t remember that particular teacher’s name–it wasn’t someone she recognized–but rumour spread through those that were biotically inclined in the Alliance.
“Normally, they’d make you go through basic training, but with everything you Grissom students did during the war, they… sort of considered that a trial by fire. Which, I guess, it kind of was.” Sure, maybe they hadn’t been on the front lines, but now… this was going to be close enough. The more experience they could give these kids so they could make their own decisions, the better.
“Surprised my biotic talent is what you first heard. Usually it’s a quip about losing me in the crowd too easily.” She chuckled. “Maybe that’s just Major Alenko, though.” Though he was currently working off the Normandy with Lieutenant-Commander Williams, he’d become… notorious on the Romanov for his consistent quips about her height.
"Right! Jack! She was a great teacher, if a little, um... well, my uncles had some pretty colorful words for her, but all said nicely? One of them's southern so... that probably sounds weird to say. But she was a great teacher! Especially when you've got way too much power to know what to do with."
Something she could relate to. Human biotics did have outliers in skill, and being among them wasn't exactly what she would have preferred. Her time helping out during the fight against the Reapers had been equal parts terrifying and enlightening, but it was good to be around someone who knew what they were doing more than she ever could have hoped. Not that it set her mind at ease... but she was young still.
The older woman taking a gentle dig at her own height did finally get the girl to smile, regardless, and she gave a soft laugh, pushing some of her hair out of her face as her eyes finally seemed to light up.
"Well... I'm not much taller than you, so I figured it was short solidarity, you know? I know what it's like to be the shortest person in the room."
WHAT TYPE OF " I LOVE YOU " ARE YOU ?
love you!
it's the "i love you" we use every time we finish up a call with our mom, every time we want to offer our friends a bit of encouragement, the welcome home kiss on the cheek we give our lover every day. it's sending them pictures you know they'll laugh at, buying them strange little nothings that you know they'll like. it's having their bagel order memorized and setting their birthday as your password. somehow, their name weaves its way into almost every funny story you share with others. it's brief, casual, it's a habit. we aren't even aware we do it. it says that love is cradled lightly in your heart, generously given, spilling out into the world unbeknownst to you, making up the web of delicate threads that hold us all together.

“You can still assist the scientists by using your biotic powers. Like making a biotic field around a small part of the device, protecting them from harmful sparks. Or using biotics to bring things for them. Meanwhile, you can learn something from them. The other students could use a familiar face around to talk to them. You can also keep informed about the rest of the students outside the Crucible project and let the others know their status. Working with Sanders, you know?”
Shepard gave her a soft smile, placing a hand on her shoulder gently. Helping others wasn’t only about fighting – he had chosen that path because of what happened to his family on Mindoir, but he would rather be helping people with other things like teaching. For now, people needed him on the battlefield, but he could understand her frustration. She wanted to help, but she wasn’t sure how.
“I’m sure there will be other things to do at the Crucible project that they can use your help. You’re more important than you think, and any help is valid.” Hopefully, she would see the importance of her work. Fighting wasn’t the only way to aid people in that war.
There were a lot of times that Odette honestly thought maybe she shouldn’t have volunteered to stay behind. But her classmates needed her, and she was a powerful enough biotic to give people pause. She knew that much very plainly, and she listened to him quietly, rubbing her wrist with one hand until she lifted her head at the hand placed on her shoulder. He was a hero, bigger than anyone else in the galaxy, so he wouldn’t steer her wrong. Right?
“My barriers are pretty good. Or at least I think so- Jack can be really hard to read sometimes, you know?”
The two of them couldn’t be more different than night and day, honestly. Though her own family liked to insist that helped really develop her biotics better, even if she didn’t always believe it. But if everyone else thought she could do it...
“If I can help with the Crucible in any way, I really want to. Everyone needs to do their part, right? So maybe... maybe I can help lift heavy things, too. Hold things up so they don’t need as many hands. Stuff like that.”
